The Iran hostage crisis was a diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States where 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days from November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981, after a group of Islamist students and militants took over the American Embassy in Tehran in support of the Iranian Revolution. President Carter called the hostages "victims of terrorism and anarchy", adding that the "United States will not yield to blackmail".
The episode reached a climax win, after failed attempts to negotiate a release, the United States military attempted a rescue operation, Operation Eagle Claw, on April 24, 1980, which resulted in a failed mission, the deaths of eight American servicemen, one Iranian civilian, and the destruction of two aircraft. It ended with the signing of the Algiers Accords in Algeria on January 19, 1981. The hostages were formally released into United States custody the following day, just minutes after the new American president Ronald Reagan was sworn into office.
The crisis has been described as an entanglement of "vengeance and mutual incomprehension". In Iran, the hostage taking was widely seen as a blow against the U.S., and its influence in Iran, its perceived attempts to undermine the Iranian Revolution, and its longstanding support of the Shah of Iran, recently overthrown by the revolution. The Shah had been restored to power in a 1953 coup organized by the CIA at the American Embassy against a democratically-elected nationalist Iranian government, and had recently been allowed into the United States for medical treatment. In the United States, the hostage-taking was seen as an outrage violating a centuries-old principle of international law granting diplomats immunity from arrest and diplomatic compounds are considered inviolable.
Iran (i/ɪˈrɑːn/ or /aɪˈræn/;Persian: ایران [ʔiˈɾɒn] (listen)), officially the Islamic Republic of Iran (Persian: جمهوری اسلامی ایران Jomhuri-ye Eslāmi-ye Irān), is a country in Southern and Western Asia. The name "Iran", which in Persian means "Land of the Aryans", has been in use natively since the Sassanian era. It came into use internationally in 1935, before which the country was known to the Western world as Persia (/ˈpɜrʒə/ or /ˈpɜrʃə/). Both "Persia" and "Iran" are used interchangeably in cultural contexts; however, "Iran" is the name used officially in political contexts.
The 18th-largest country in the world in terms of area at 1,648,195 km2 (636,372 sq mi), Iran has a population of around 79 million. It is a country of particular geopolitical significance owing to its location in the Middle East and central Eurasia. Iran is bordered on the north by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. As Iran is a littoral state of the Caspian Sea, which is an inland sea, Kazakhstan and Russia are also Iran's direct neighbors to the north. Iran is bordered on the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan, on the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, on the west by Iraq and on the northwest by Turkey. Tehran is the capital, the country's largest city and the political, cultural, commercial and industrial center of the nation. Iran is a regional power, and holds an important position in international energy security and world economy as a result of its large reserves of petroleum and natural gas. Iran has the second largest proven natural gas reserves in the world and the fourth largest proven petroleum reserves.
A hostage crisis develops when one or more terrorists or criminals hold people against their will and try to hold off the authorities by force, threatening to kill the hostages if provoked or attacked.
Typically, the party of the hostage-taker(s) will issue demands to the forces keeping him/her, or them, surrounded. In a planned hostage crisis, there is often a list of political or religious demands, often including the release of imprisoned friends or allies. In cases where the hostage situation was improvised as a desperate attempt to avoid capture, the demands usually revolve around exchanging the lives of the hostages for transport to safety.
Journalists sometimes use the alternative term siege to describe these incidents. However, events like the Waco Siege are not necessarily hostage crises, because third parties are not being held or threatened.

To voice their dissent a group of revolutionary university students entered the US embassy compound or “den of espionage” as it was later dubbed, and there they found piles of shredded documents that proved the US’s interference in Iran’s internal affairs. The hostage crisis as it was called in the US had many ups and downs but finally the issue ended diplomatically with the signing of the Algiers Accords on January 19, 1981. The staff of the embassy were held in the US embassy compound in Tehran for a total of 444 days. This event played a significant role in shaping the Iran-US relations.
Now after almost 30 years, four people at the heart of the events talk about their experience and voice their views in retrospect. Two former students and two former US officials held in Tehran.

The Iran hostage crisis, referred to within Iran in Persian as تسخیر لانه جاسوسی امریکا (literally "Conquest of the American Spy Den,"), was a diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States. Fifty-two American diplomats and citizens were held hostage for 444 days (November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981), after a group of Iranian students, belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line, who were supporting the Iranian Revolution, took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. President Jimmy Carter called the hostages "victims of terrorism and anarchy," adding that "the United States will not yield to blackmail."
The crisis was described by the western media as an entanglement of "vengeance and mutual incomprehension." In Iran, the hostage taking was widely seen as a blow against the United States and its influence in Iran, its perceived attempts to undermine the Iranian Revolution, and its longstanding support of the recently overthrown Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
Following his overthrow in 1979, the Shah was admitted into the U.S. for medical treatment for cancer. The Iranians demanded that the Shah be returned to Iran for trial and execution for crimes he was accused of committing during his reign. Specifically, they accused the Shah of crimes against Iranian citizens with the help of his secret police, the SAVAK. Iranians saw the asylum granted by the U.S. as American complicity in the atrocities the Shah had committed. In the United States, the hostage-taking was seen as an egregious violation of the principles of international law which granted diplomats immunity from arrest and diplomatic compounds' inviolability.
The hostage crisis reached a climax after failed attempts to negotiate a release of the hostages, the United States military attempted a rescue operation using ships such as the USS Nimitz and USS Coral Sea that were patrolling the waters near Iran. On April 24, 1980, Operation Eagle Claw resulted in a failed mission, the deaths of eight American servicemen, one Iranian civilian, and the destruction of two aircraft.
The Shah left the United States in December 1979 and was ultimately granted asylum in Egypt, where he died from complications of cancer on July 27, 1980. In September of 1980, the military of Iraq invaded Iran, marking the beginning of the Iran-Iraq War. These events led the Iranian government to enter negotiations with the U.S., with Algeria acting as a mediator. The hostages were formally released into United States custody the day after the signing of the Algiers Accords, just minutes after the new American president, Ronald Reagan, was sworn into office.
Considered a pivotal episode in the history of Iran–United States relations, political analysts cite the crisis as having weighed heavily on Jimmy Carter's presidency and run for reelection in the 1980 presidential election. In Iran, the crisis strengthened the prestige of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and the political power of those who supported theocracy and opposed any normalization of relations with the West. The crisis also marked the beginning of U.S. legal action resulting in economic sanctions against Iran, to further weaken ties between Iran and the United States.
Such protests occur every year outside the former embassy compound to mark the anniversary of the 1979 takeover following the Islamic Revolution.

Iran's authorities organised a rally on Friday to mark the anniversary of the 1979 hostage crisis, when revolutionary students stormed the US embassy in Tehran and took hostage 52 Americans.
The storming of the embassy began a 444-day hostage crisis and severed Washington's ties with Iran.
The large group of protesters chanted slogans against the US, the UK and Israel.
One protester said the sanctions imposed on Iran by the West were having "no effect" on the nation's resolve.
"They might make more problems for the people, but sanctions have been there ever since the beginning of Islam, and as a result people have become more vigilant and more knowledgeable," he said.
The US and the European Union intensified sanctions against Iran in July.
The EU imposed an oil embargo against Iran in July, adding to US-led sanctions that prohibit the world's banks from completing oil transactions with Iranian banks, complicating Iran's ability to conduct international commerce.
General Mohammad-Reza Naghdi, commander of the pro-government paramilitary Basij forces, addressed the crowd, offering a reward of gold for "any historian or researcher that could prove that there has ever existed throughout human history a regime committing more crimes than the US regime."

+4:3 Anti-US gathering to mark anniversary of 1979 hostage crisis
Tens of thousands of demonstrators packed the streets outside the former US Embassy in Tehran on Monday, marking the anniversary of the 1979 takeover following the Islamic Revolution.
It is the biggest anti-American rally in years, a show of support for hard-line opponents of President Hassan Rouhani's historic outreach to Washington.
Such protests occur every year outside the former embassy compound to mark the anniversary of the 1979 takeover following the Islamic Revolution.
But the latest demonstration is the largest in years after calls by groups such as the powerful Revolutionary Guard for a major showing, including chants of "death to America" that some of Rouhani's backers have urged halted.
The crowds also send a message to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has cautiously backed Rouhani's overtures to the US and efforts to end the impasse with the West over Tehran's nuclear programme.
"Fighting the global arrogance and hostile policies of America is the symbol of our national solidarity," said Saeed Jalili, a hardline member of Iran's Expediency Council, during his speech at the rally.
Ties between the two countries were severed after the embassy siege, which began a hostage crisis with 52 people held for 444 days.
In September, Rouhani accepted from a call from US President Barack Obama following the annual UN General Assembly in New York, where US Secretary of State John Kerry held talks with Iran's Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif.
"Thank God, the rally is more spirited than last year, some people (referring to moderates) said "Let's not chant 'death to America' this year, it is not good for us", but the leader (Khamenei) has said that it is a good thing for us to chant 'death to America', the world must see this," said one protester, Reza Farahbakhsh.
Khamenei on Sunday praised Iranian militant students who stormed the US Embassy in 1979.
Khamenei's backing of Rouhani also puts him in an unfamiliar spot of having to reassure hard-liners he has not abandoned their views.

During a Wednesday press conference to promote the Iranian nuclear deal he had announced a day earlier, President Barack Obama fielded a question from CBS White House correspondent Major Garrett regarding the four Americans held captive in Iran and why he didn’t seek their release during these negotiations.
Exchange as follows:
GARRETT: Thank you, Mr. President. As you well know, there are four Americans in Iran — three held on trumped-up charges and according to your administration and one whereabouts unknown. Can you tell the country, sir, why you are content with all the fanfare around this deal to leave the conscious of this nation, the strength of this nation unaccounted for in relation to these four Americans? And last week the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said under no circumstances should there be any relief for Iran in terms of ballistic missiles or conventional weapons. It is perceived that that was a last-minute capitulation in these negotiations. Many in the Pentagon feel you’ve left the Joint Chiefs of Staff hung out to dry. Would you comment?
OBAMA: I’ve to give you credit for how you craft those questions. The notion that I’m content as I celebrate with American citizens languishing in Iranian jails — Major, that’s nonsense, and you should know better. I’ve met with the families of some of those folks. Nobody is content, and our diplomats and our teams are working diligently to try to get them out. Now, if the question is why we did not tie the negotiations to their release, think about the logic that that creates.
Suddenly Iran realizes, you know what? Maybe we can get additional concessions out of the Americans by holding these individuals. Makes it much more difficult for us to walk away if Iran somehow thinks that a nuclear deal is dependent in some fashion on the nuclear deal, and, by the way, if we had walked away from the nuclear deal, we’d still be pushing them just as hard to get these folks out. That’s why those issues are not connected, but we are working every single day to try to get them out and won’t stop until they are out and rejoined with their families.

444 Days (The Hostage Crisis in Retrospect)
Shortly before the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran in I979, the Shah or former monarch and dictator of the country fled. In late October 1979 the Shah was admitted to the United States which served as his most powerful ally. The Shah’s entrance to the States created an immediate outcry in Iran as the public and the revolutionary government demanded his extradition to face trials for his wrongdoings. This action of the US infuriated the people as they were reminded of how 26 years earlier the Shah had fled abroad while the Embassy-based American CIA and British intelligence organized a coup d'état to overthrow the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran Mohammad Mosaddegh.

Iran's Revolutions: Crash Course World History 226
In which John Green teaches you about Iran's Revolutions. Yes, revolutions plural. What was the1979 Iranian Revolution about? It turns out, Iran has a pretty long history of unrest in order to put power in the hands of the people, and the most recent revolution in 1979 was, at least at first, not necessarily about creating an Islamic state. It certainly turned out to be about that, but it was initially just about people who wanted to get rid of an oppressive regime. Listen up as John teaches you about Iran's long history of revolution.

A documentary report all about Iran hostage crisis for the blind and visually impaired or for homework/assignment.
The Iran hostage crisis, also known in Iran as the Conquest of the American Spy Den (Persian: تسخیر لانه جاسوسی آمریکا Taskhire lāne jāsusi Âmrikā), was a diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States.
