Afghanistan and Pakistan, though situated in Asia, are considered part of the Greater Middle East. U.S. intervention in both Afghanistan and Pakistan started with the Carter Administration after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The relations of the U.S. with Afghanistan and Pakistan have been closely tied to the War on terrorism that has happened there. American policy has been instrumental in coordinating the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan. In recent times, political situations of both countries have been bracketed under a single theater of operations, denoted by the newly coined American term "AfPak." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_intervention_in_the_Middle_East Sudan -- United States relations are extremely complicated, both politically and economically. China is critical of Sudan's human rights record and has sent a strong UN Peacekeeping force to Darfur. Many Sudanese, both civilians and Government officials say that the interference of the U.S. and other Western nations in Darfur and against leader Omar al-Bashir is part of a covert plot to throw their country in economic (since business relations between the two have been defunct since 1997), governmental, and territorial unrest. U.S. relations with Sudan were further strained in the 1990s. Sudan backed Iraq in its invasion of Kuwait and provided sanctuary and assistance to Islamic terrorist groups. In the early and mid-1990s, Carlos the Jackal, Osama bin Laden, Abu Nidal, and other terrorist leaders resided in Khartoum. Sudan's role in the radical Pan-Arab Islamic Conference represented a matter of great concern to the security of American officials and dependents in Khartoum, resulting in several drawdowns and/or evacuations of U.S. personnel from Khartoum in the early-mid 1990s. Sudan's Islamist links with international terrorist organizations represented a special matter of concern for the U.S. Government, leading to Sudan's 1993 designation as a state sponsor of terrorism and a suspension of U.S. Embassy operations in Khartoum in 1996. In October 1997, the U.S. imposed comprehensive economic, trade, and financial sanctions against the Sudan. In August 1998, in the wake of the East Africa embassy bombings, the U.S. launched cruise missile strikes against Khartoum. The last U.S. Ambassador to the Sudan, Ambassador Tim Carney, departed post prior to this event and no new ambassador has been designated since. She has returned to Korea with prospects for stronger and much more active cooperation with the region. Our Choi You-sun takes us through some of the achievements from the presidential trip. Speaking to reporters en route to Seoul,... President Park said she felt that Korea′s vision for revitalizing the economy through greater economic cooperation with the Middle East is being realized. President Park said that one of the biggest achievements from her trip... was helping small to mid-sized Korean firms strike business deals in the region′s so-called "new" industries. In fact, one-on-one business sessions in each of the four countries, many of which were attended by SMEs, resulted in 44 bilateral agreements totaling 900 million dollars. The agreements expand existing oil and construction-centered cooperation into the fields of nuclear energy, agriculture, health care, ICT and culture. These post oil-era initiatives, the president said, are in line with Seoul′s economic innovation plan. "Previously energy-focused, these countries have started seeking multi-dimensional development. And that′s helped us rediscover the Middle East, and encouraged the region to once again recognize Korea as an important partner." As for the specific areas of cooperation, the presidential office listed Korea′s first export of its creative economy model to Saudi Arabia, a deal between Korea and the UAE to develop Korea′s halal industry, and an establishment of a cultural center in Abu Dhabi. The presidential office said dozens of deals were made mainly because Koreans′ expertise, credibility and hard-working style have helped build trust in the region. "As it is with friends, I′ve started to believe that if countries value trust and work for it, we can make another leap in the Middle East." To sustain the momentum, Seoul plans to monitor the progress of the deals with these four countries and boost cooperation to ensure they are implemented. Choi You-sun, Arirang News.

English/Nat U-N Secretary-General Kofi Annan has welcomed an Israeli proposal to pull troops out of south Lebanon - a move that could end two decades of bloody Israeli involvement in that country. Annan held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Ezer Weizman and Defence Minister Yitzhak Mordechai on Tuesday during the Israeli leg of his tour of the Middle East. But despite his enthusiastic reception by the Palestinians, Annan did not appear to make headway on the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process. U-N Secretary General Kofi Annan was in Israel on Tuesday as part of his tour of the Middle East. Later in the day he held talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem. This was possibly the toughest challenge of Annan's Middle East mission - that of persuading Israel to show greater flexibility in reviving the ailing peace talks. On Monday, the Secretary General met Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, who said he hoped Annan could break the Israel-Palestinian deadlock as he resolved the Iraqi crisis last month. Then, Annan tried to down play expectations that he could move forward the stalled negotiations. But on Tuesday he appeared slightly more confident. SOUNDBITE: (English) "And I as Secretary General, as we had the opportunity to discuss privately and with your colleagues, will do whatever I can to assist the process, and so I appeal to all concerned that we work in partnership to move this process forward." Mordechai proposed that Israel withdraw its troops after obtaining guarantees that the Lebanese army will deploy in the south and prevent attacks by Hezbollah guerrillas. Annan welcomed the Israeli proposal to pull troops out of south Lebanon. The Secretary General then went on to meet Israeli President Ezer Weizman. Both he and Weizman spoke confidently of the peace process finding new momentum.
