Similarly, the masājid must be safeguarded from that which does not befit them; from the greatest [of these affairs], innovations, newly invented matters and Shirk with Allāh; so it is obligatory to banish the people of innovation, the people of superstitions and polytheists from the masājid. It is not permissible to allow them to establish themselves or their innovations, superstitions or Shirk in the masājid. “It is not for the polytheists to maintain the houses of Allāh.” [Al-Tawbah 9:17] Rather, it is obligatory to prevent them from them. The masājid must remain open for the remembrance of Allāh Alone and His worship alone. “And the masājid are for Allāh [Alone], so do not call on anyone other than Him. [Al-Jinn 72:18] This is how the masājid are maintained, with Tawhīd and Ta’ah (obedience); worship and remembrance of Allāh. Similarly, the masājid are safeguarded from that which does not befit them from filth and impurities; and protected from ignoramuses and children who do wrong in them; protected from spitting saliva and phlegm in them. This is from what Allāh has prohibited.

Et quiconque obéit à Allāh et à Son Messager, et craint Allāh, et Le prend comme bouclier pour se protéger, ceux-là seront triomphants. Et ils jurent par Allāh des serments les plus solennels que si tu le leur commandes, ils sortiront assurément. Dis : « Ne jurez pas ; la manière d’agir c’est l’obéissance en ce qui est juste. Assurément, Allāh est très conscient de ce que vous faites. » Dis : « Obéissez à Allāh et obéissez au Messager. » Et s’ils se détournent, alors rappelez-vous, quiconque agira ainsi, il sera tenu responsable de ce qui lui aura été confié, tout comme vous serez tenus responsables de ce qui vous aura été confié. Et si vous lui obéissez, vous serez bien guidés. Et le Messager n’est responsable que de la claire transmission du Message. Allāh a promis à ceux d’entre vous qui croient, et qui font de bonnes œuvres, qu’Il fera assurément d’eux des Successeurs sur la terre, tout comme Il a fait des Successeurs de parmi ceux qui les ont devancés ; et qu’Il établira assurément pour eux leur religion qu’Il a choisie pour eux ; et qu’Il leur donnera assurément en échange, après leur crainte, sécurité et paix : Ils M’adoreront, et ne M’associeront rien. Puis quiconque sera ingrat après cela, celui-là sera du nombre des rebelles. Et observez la Prière et payez la Zakāt et obéissez au Messager, afin que miséricorde vous soit faite. (Le Saint Coran, chapitre 24, versets 52 à 57)

Usūl al-Fiqh part 3, class notes Categories of Wājib a) Wājib muwassaʿ, flexible obligation There is flexibility as to performing the act within its allotted time segment e.g. ṣalāh, qaḍāʾ of Ramaḍān, payment of kaffāra b) Wājib Muḍayyaq, inflexible obligation Must be performed in its fixed time e.g. the fast of Ramaḍān, both in terms of month and day, and that no other variety of fasting may be observed in that month c) Wājib Muḥaddad, quantified obligation the niṣāb for zakāt, ḥudūd, payment of a specific price in contract, payment of rent agreed on in tenancy agreement d) Wājib Ghayr Muḥaddad, unquantified obligation e.g. how much you should spend on your wife, co-operation in birr and taqwā, feeding poor, helping needy, mahr or dowry, length of rukūʿ and sujūd in prayer e) wājib muʿayyan, specified obligation What the Mukallaf has to do, he cannot replace it with something else e.g. ṣalāh, ramaḍan, returning a stolen item to its owner f) wājib ghayr muʿayyn, or mukhayyar optional obligation e.g. kaffāratu’l-yamīn: feeding 10 poor people, clothing them or setting a slave free or if he cannot do any of these then fast three days 5:89 kaffārah for erroneous killing as per 4:92: free a slave, feed sixty poor people, fast two consecutive months. g) Wājib ʿainī, farḍ ʿayn, Personal/Individual obligation e.g. ṣalāh, ḥajj, zakāh, fulfilling contracts, obedience to parents h) wājib kifāʾī, fard kifāyah, Collective Obligation e.g. Janāzah prayer, enjoining good and prohibiting evil, serving as a judge, building hospitals and schools - If no one does it, all are sinful, but if some do it, the obligation is lifted from all Wājib kifāʾī can become wājib ʿaynī: e.g. when the enemy attacks and besieges a locality, standing in defense becomes obligatory on all residents. If there is only one mujtahid in a locality, ijtihād becomes obligatory on him

Apple and IBM release 10 new apps, incorporating analytics and iBeacons

Apple and IBM’s enterprise partnership has yielded 10 new apps, including one that targets business travellers and others that make use of predictive analytics and iBeacons. The companies said last July they were working together to build apps for industries like health care, retail, and insurance. IBM also said it would sell and support Apple hardware ... With the latest announcement, the companies have launched almost three dozen apps....

The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be located 3km (2mi) NorthEast of the town of Fremont, California. Other regions close to the epicenter include Union City, Newark, Pleasanton, and Sacramento. Several people in the area were woken up by the earthquake following which there was panic.
