Das Gebäude des Bauhauses ist ein veritables Manifest für eine Ästhetik der Transparenz: Alle Räume stehen miteinander in Verbindung, alles fördert die Bewegung, den Austausch und den Kontakt der Studenten mit den verschiedenen Räumen und Disziplinen.
Schon 1926, ein Jahr nach Baubeginn, galt das Bauhaus, das Stadt, Fabrik und Schule zu einer Einheit verbindet, als Gropius' Hauptwerk. Doch es wurde schnell zum Politikum und musste 1932, nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten in Dessau, nach Berlin umziehen, wo es letztendlich geschlossen wurde. Der Plan, das als Provokation empfundene Gebäude teilweise abzureißen, wurde schließlich fallengelassen, und die Nationalsozialisten nutzten das Bauhaus als Ausbildungsstätte für ihre Parteikader.
Auch den Kommunisten gefiel das Bauhaus nicht, doch auch sie wagten nicht, es abzureißen und ließen in den 50er Jahren die durch Bombardierungen beschädigten Gebäudeteile notdürftig ausbessern. Erst 20 Jahre später wurde das Bauhaus restauriert. Gropius ließ sich in den USA nieder und gelangte dort als radikaler Erneuerer der amerikanischen Architektur zu Berühmtheit (Text von arte Baukunst).

In occasione della mostra "Bauhaus", tenutasi presso la Galleria Nazionale di Arte Moderna (GNAM) di Roma tra il 20 novembre e il 5 dicembre 1961, il prof. Emilio Garroni, docente di filosofia estetica, intervista Walter Gropius che fu il direttore della celeberrima scuola di design attiva a Weimar negli anni '20. Il brano è tratto dalla trasmissione RAI "Arti e Scienze". Nel filmato, molto interessante, si riconosce anche lo storico dell'architettura Bruno Zevi.

McCue Professor of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) and is the principal designer at Preston Scott Cohen, Inc. of Cambridge, MA. His work exemplifies a new, highly disciplined synthesis of architectural typologies, geometry and urban contexts. Recent projects completed or under construction include the Taiyuan Museum of Art, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art Amir Building, Datong City Library, the Keystone School Auditorium in Beijing, the Nanjing Performing Arts Center, the Fahmy Residence in Los Gatos, California, and the Goldman Sachs Arcade Canopy in New York. Das Walter Gropius 1911 errichtete Fagus-Werk in Alfeld gilt als Ursprungsbau der Moderne. Mit seiner repräsentativen Sachlichkeit und dem großflächigen Gebrauch von Glas war das Gebäude auch Ausdruck eines neuen unternehmerischen Selbstbewusstseins und einer modernen Werbestrategie. Die Fabrikanlage ist seit 1946 eingetragenes Baudenkmal, wurde aufwendig restauriert und steht Besuchern zur Besichtigung offen.
1911 beauftragte Carl Benscheidt den Architekten und späteren Bauhausgründer Walter Gropius damit, eine Fabrik zu bauen. So wuchs in Alfeld ein Bau in die Höhe, der einerseits der Architekturgeschichte eine neue Wendung gab, andererseits beispielhaft für eine sozialreformerisch orientierte Unternehmenskultur der damaligen Zeit wurde.
Unter dem Motto: "Der Arbeit Paläste bauen" entwarf Walter Gropius nicht nur ein hochmodernes Erscheinungsbild der Fabrik, sondern auch für die damalige Zeit vorbildliche Arbeitsbedingungen und Sozialeinrichtungen. Im Fagus-Werk verbinden sich so die Neuerungen der aufkommenden modernen Architektur mit einer neuen Ethik der Industriearbeit und der gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung des Unternehmers.
Das Fagus-Werk ist ein lebendiges Denkmal der Kulturgeschichte, in dem sich beispielhaft der Zusammenhang zwischen avantgardistischen Bestrebungen in der Architektur und sozialethischen Vorstellungen im frühen 20. Jahrhundert spiegelt.
Am 27. Juni 2011 hat das UNESCO-Welterbekomitee in Paris das lebende Denkmal Fagus-Werk in Niedersachsen zum Weltkulturerbe ernannt.

Ce mouvement posera les bases de la réflexion sur l'architecture moderne, et notamment du style international. En 1933, le Bauhaus (installé à Berlin) est fermé par les nazis, et sa dissolution est prononcée par ses responsables. De nombreux artistes et professeurs s'exilent aux États-Unis pour échapper au nazisme.
Si l'école du Bauhaus est surtout connue pour ses réalisations en matière d'architecture, elle a aussi exercé une forte influence sur les arts plastiques, à travers les objets usuels qu'elle a façonnés, elle est en plus le précurseur du design contemporain.
Le programme du Bauhaus a suscité l'adhésion d'un grand nombre d'artistes d'avant-garde de toute l'Europe, parmi lesquels on peut citer Johannes Itten, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy ou Marcel Breuer.

Walter Adolph Georg Gropius (May 18, 1883 – July 5, 1969) was a German architect and founder of the Bauhaus School who, along with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, is widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture.
Born in Berlin, Walter Gropius was the third child of Walter Adolph Gropius and Manon Auguste Pauline Scharnweber. Gropius married Alma Mahler (1879–1964), widow of Gustav Mahler. Walter and Alma's daughter, named Manon after Walter's mother, was born in 1916. When Manon died of polio at age 18, composer Alban Berg wrote his Violin Concerto in memory of her (it is inscribed "to the memory of an angel"). Gropius and Alma divorced in 1920. (Alma had by that time established a relationship with Franz Werfel, whom she later married.) In 1923, Gropius married Ise (Ilse) Frank (d. 1983), and they remained together until his death. They adopted Beate Gropius, also known as Ati.
Walter Gropius, like his father and his great-uncle Martin Gropius before him, became an architect. Gropius could not draw, and was dependent on collaborators and partner-interpreters throughout his career. In school he hired an assistant to complete his homework for him. In 1908 Gropius found employment with the firm of Peter Behrens, one of the first members of the utilitarian school. His fellow employees at this time included Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, and Dietrich Marcks.

Das Gebäude des Bauhauses ist ein veritables Manifest für eine Ästhetik der Transparenz: Alle Räume stehen miteinander in Verbindung, alles fördert die Bewegung, den Austausch und den Kontakt der Studenten mit den verschiedenen Räumen und Disziplinen.
Schon 1926, ein Jahr nach Baubeginn, galt das Bauhaus, das Stadt, Fabrik und Schule zu einer Einheit verbindet, als Gropius' Hauptwerk. Doch es wurde schnell zum Politikum und musste 1932, nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten in Dessau, nach Berlin umziehen, wo es letztendlich geschlossen wurde. Der Plan, das als Provokation empfundene Gebäude teilweise abzureißen, wurde schließlich fallengelassen, und die Nationalsozialisten nutzten das Bauhaus als Ausbildungsstätte für ihre Parteikader.
Auch den Kommunisten gefiel das Bauhaus nicht, doch auch sie wagten nicht, es abzureißen und ließen in den 50er Jahren die durch Bombardierungen beschädigten Gebäudeteile notdürftig ausbessern. Erst 20 Jahre später wurde das Bauhaus restauriert. Gropius ließ sich in den USA nieder und gelangte dort als radikaler Erneuerer der amerikanischen Architektur zu Berühmtheit (Text von arte Baukunst).

Das Walter Gropius 1911 errichtete Fagus-Werk in Alfeld gilt als Ursprungsbau der Moderne. Mit seiner repräsentativen Sachlichkeit und dem großflächigen Gebrauch von Glas war das Gebäude auch Ausdruck eines neuen unternehmerischen Selbstbewusstseins und einer modernen Werbestrategie. Die Fabrikanlage ist seit 1946 eingetragenes Baudenkmal, wurde aufwendig restauriert und steht Besuchern zur Besichtigung offen.
1911 beauftragte Carl Benscheidt den Architekten und späteren Bauhausgründer Walter Gropius damit, eine Fabrik zu bauen. So wuchs in Alfeld ein Bau in die Höhe, der einerseits der Architekturgeschichte eine neue Wendung gab, andererseits beispielhaft für eine sozialreformerisch orientierte Unternehmenskultur der damaligen Zeit wurde.
Unter dem Motto: "Der Arbeit Paläste bauen" entwarf Walter Gropius nicht nur ein hochmodernes Erscheinungsbild der Fabrik, sondern auch für die damalige Zeit vorbildliche Arbeitsbedingungen und Sozialeinrichtungen. Im Fagus-Werk verbinden sich so die Neuerungen der aufkommenden modernen Architektur mit einer neuen Ethik der Industriearbeit und der gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung des Unternehmers.
Das Fagus-Werk ist ein lebendiges Denkmal der Kulturgeschichte, in dem sich beispielhaft der Zusammenhang zwischen avantgardistischen Bestrebungen in der Architektur und sozialethischen Vorstellungen im frühen 20. Jahrhundert spiegelt.
Am 27. Juni 2011 hat das UNESCO-Welterbekomitee in Paris das lebende Denkmal Fagus-Werk in Niedersachsen zum Weltkulturerbe ernannt.

Since 1999, postgraduate education is available, but the new Bauhaus is more then just a museum or school; the institution is THE place to be for education, research and design of the present day urban development.
Walter Gropius really became famous with the transparent glass architecture of the Bauhaus building. He had thought up a three dimensional form that was way ahead of its time. The building did not in any way have a claim to eternal fame, but strangely it seems to have done just that.
Gropius designed the building as a well functioning cover that would bring the outside world in, and let the inside world out. His Bauhaus educational theory was 'art and technology, a new unity'.

The Bauhaus school was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. In spite of its name, and the fact that its founder was an architect, the Bauhaus did not have an architecture department during the first years of its existence. Nonetheless it was founded with the idea of creating a "total" work of art in which all arts, including architecture, would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style became one of the most influential currents in Modernist architecture and modern design. The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography.
The school existed in three German cities (Weimar from 1919 to 1925, Dessau from 1925 to 1932 and Berlin from 1932 to 1933), under three different architect-directors: Walter Gropius from 1919 to 1928, Hannes Meyer from 1928 to 1930 and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe from 1930 until 1933, when the school was closed by its own leadership under pressure from the Nazi regime.
The changes of venue and leadership resulted in a constant shifting of focus, technique, instructors, and politics. For instance: the pottery shop was discontinued when the school moved from Weimar to Dessau, even though it had been an important revenue source; when Mies van der Rohe took over the school in 1930, he transformed it into a private school, and would not allow any supporters of Hannes Meyer to attend it.
