"253 Mathilde" is a main-belt asteroid about 50 km in diameter that was discovered by Johann Palisa in 1885. It has a relatively elliptical orbit that requires more than four years to circle the Sun. This asteroid has an unusually slow rate of rotation, requiring 17.4 days to complete a 360° revolution about its axis. It is a primitive C-type asteroid, which means the surface has a high proportion of carbon; giving it a dark surface that reflects only 4% of the light that falls on it.
This asteroid was visited by the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft during June 1997, on its way to asteroid 433 Eros. During the flyby, the spacecraft imaged a hemisphere of the asteroid, revealing many large craters that have gouged out depressions in the surface. It was the first C-type asteroid to be explored and, until 21 Lutetia was visited in 2010, it was the largest asteroid to be visited by a spacecraft.
In 1880, Johann Palisa, the director of the Austrian Naval Observatory, was offered a position as an assistant at the newly completed Vienna Observatory. Although the job represented a demotion for Johann, it gave him access to the new 27 in refractor, the largest telescope in the world at that time. By this point Johann had already discovered 27 asteroids, and he would employ the Vienna 27 in and 12 in instruments to find an additional 94 asteroids before he retired.
Among his discoveries was the asteroid 253 Mathilde, found on November 12, 1885. The initial orbital elements of the asteroid were then computed by V. A. Lebeuf, another Austrian astronomer working at the observatory. The name of the asteroid was suggested by Lebeuf, after Mathilde, the wife of Moritz Leowy—who was the vice director of the Paris Observatory.

In Meyers Konversations-Lexikon waren der Stadt 1896 eineinhalb Druckseiten gewidmet: Pola wurde als Festung ersten Ranges bezeichnet; auf den Hügeln über der Stadt befanden sich 28 Forts, teilweise mit Panzertürmen. Zwischen der Insel Brioni und dem Festland befand sich der Außenhafen; der eigentliche Hafen war 8,6 km² groß, teils Handels-, teils Kriegshafen. Die Marinesektion des k.u.k. Kriegsministeriums betrieb in Pola von Trocken- und Schwimmdocks über die Marineakademie, das Hydrographische Amt, ein Artillerielaboratorium und ein Pulvermagazin bis zum Arsenal (mit 2000 Arbeitern) sämtliche für den Seekrieg wichtigen Einrichtungen. Mit den U-Booten der Monarchie waren auch U-Boote der deutschen Kriegsmarine hier stationiert. Noch heute erinnert der „K.u.K. Marinefriedhof" an der Ulica Stoja und die Anlagen in der Bucht daneben an diese Zeit. In der Astronomie ist Pula durch Johann Palisa bekannt, der an der dortigen Marine-Sternwarte von 1874 bis 1880 die ersten 29 seiner 123 Asteroiden entdeckte. Als sich am Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges am 29. Oktober 1918 der neue südslawische Staat bildete und Österreich-Ungarn dadurch seinen Zugang zum Meer verlor, ordnete Kaiser Karl I. am 30. Oktober an, die k.u.k. Kriegsflotte den Südslawen zu übergeben. Am 31. Oktober 1918 nahm Konteradmiral Horthy in Pola befehlsgemäß die Übergabe vor: Die österreichische Kriegsflagge wurde eingeholt, die südslawische aufgezogen, südslawische Marineoffiziere übernahmen das Kommando. Dennoch wurde das Schlachtschiff SMS Viribus Unitis, das nunmehr „Jugoslavia" hieß und nach wie vor der Stolz der Flotte war, am 1. November 1918 um 6 Uhr früh von zwei italienischen Kampfschwimmern versenkt, die mittels eines umgebauten Torpedos Sprengsätze am Rumpf verteilt und gezündet hatten.[2] Über 400 Seeleute starben, darunter auch der letzte Kommandant des Schiffes, Janko Vukovic de Podkapelski; zu seinen und der anderen Gefallenen Ehre wurde in Pola eine Gedenktafel angebracht.

The "Hilda" or "Hildian asteroids" are a "dynamical group" of asteroids in a 3:2 orbital resonance with Jupiter. Hildas move in their elliptical orbits so that their aphelia put them opposite Jupiter, or 60 degrees ahead of or behind Jupiter at the and Lagrangian points. Over three successive orbits each Hilda asteroid passes through all of these three points in sequence. Consequently, a Hilda's orbit has a semi-major axis between 3.7 AU and 4.2 AU, an eccentricity less than 0.3, and an inclination less than 20°. Two collisional families exist within the Hilda group: the Hilda family and the Schubart family. The namesake is 153 Hilda, discovered by Johann Palisa in 1875. There are more than 1,100 known Hilda asteroids including unnumbered objects.
Hildas' surface colors often correspond to the low-albedo D-type and P-type; however, a small portion are C-type. D-type and P-type asteroids have surface colors, and thus also surface mineralogies, similar to those of cometary nuclei. This implies that they share a common origin.
The asteroids of the Hilda group are in 3:2 mean-motion resonance with Jupiter. That is, their orbital periods are 2/3 that of Jupiter. They move along the orbits with a semimajor axis near 4.0 AU and moderate values of eccentricity and inclination . Unlike the Jupiter trojans they may have any difference in longitude with Jupiter, nevertheless avoiding dangerous approaches to the planet.

Johann Palisa
Johann Palisa (December 6, 1848 – May 2, 1925) was an Austrian astronomer, born in Troppau in Austrian Silesia (now in the Czech Republic).
He was a prolific discoverer of asteroids, discovering 122 in all, from 136 Austria in 1874 to 1073 Gellivara in 1923. Some of his notable discoveries include 153 Hilda, 216 Kleopatra, 243 Ida, 253 Mathilde, 324 Bamberga, and the Amor asteroid 719 Albert.
The minor planet 914 Palisana and the lunar crater Palisa were named in his honour. He was awarded the Valz Prize from the French Academy of Sciences in 1906.
Early work
From 1866 to 1870, Palisa studied mathematics and astronomy at the University of Vienna; however, he did not graduate until 1884. Despite this, by 1870 he was an assistant at the University's observatory, and a year later gained a position at the observatory in Geneva. A few years later, in 1872, at the age of 24, Palisa became the director of the Austrian Naval Observatory in Pula. While at Pula, he discovered his first asteroid, 136 Austria, on March 18, 1874. Along with this, he discovered twenty-seven minor planets and one comet. During his stay in Pula he used a small six-inch refractor telescope to aid in his research.

"253 Mathilde" is a main-belt asteroid about 50 km in diameter that was discovered by Johann Palisa in 1885. It has a relatively elliptical orbit that requires more than four years to circle the Sun. This asteroid has an unusually slow rate of rotation, requiring 17.4 days to complete a 360° revolution about its axis. It is a primitive C-type asteroid, which means the surface has a high proportion of carbon; giving it a dark surface that reflects only 4% of the light that falls on it.
This asteroid was visited by the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft during June 1997, on its way to asteroid 433 Eros. During the flyby, the spacecraft imaged a hemisphere of the asteroid, revealing many large craters that have gouged out depressions in the surface. It was the first C-type asteroid to be explored and, until 21 Lutetia was visited in 2010, it was the largest asteroid to be visited by a spacecraft.
In 1880, Johann Palisa, the director of the Austrian Naval Observatory, was offered a position as an assistant at the newly completed Vienna Observatory. Although the job represented a demotion for Johann, it gave him access to the new 27 in refractor, the largest telescope in the world at that time. By this point Johann had already discovered 27 asteroids, and he would employ the Vienna 27 in and 12 in instruments to find an additional 94 asteroids before he retired.
Among his discoveries was the asteroid 253 Mathilde, found on November 12, 1885. The initial orbital elements of the asteroid were then computed by V. A. Lebeuf, another Austrian astronomer working at the observatory. The name of the asteroid was suggested by Lebeuf, after Mathilde, the wife of Moritz Leowy—who was the vice director of the Paris Observatory.

In Meyers Konversations-Lexikon waren der Stadt 1896 eineinhalb Druckseiten gewidmet: Pola wurde als Festung ersten Ranges bezeichnet; auf den Hügeln über der Stadt befanden sich 28 Forts, teilweise mit Panzertürmen. Zwischen der Insel Brioni und dem Festland befand sich der Außenhafen; der eigentliche Hafen war 8,6 km² groß, teils Handels-, teils Kriegshafen. Die Marinesektion des k.u.k. Kriegsministeriums betrieb in Pola von Trocken- und Schwimmdocks über die Marineakademie, das Hydrographische Amt, ein Artillerielaboratorium und ein Pulvermagazin bis zum Arsenal (mit 2000 Arbeitern) sämtliche für den Seekrieg wichtigen Einrichtungen. Mit den U-Booten der Monarchie waren auch U-Boote der deutschen Kriegsmarine hier stationiert. Noch heute erinnert der „K.u.K. Marinefriedhof" an der Ulica Stoja und die Anlagen in der Bucht daneben an diese Zeit. In der Astronomie ist Pula durch Johann Palisa bekannt, der an der dortigen Marine-Sternwarte von 1874 bis 1880 die ersten 29 seiner 123 Asteroiden entdeckte. Als sich am Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges am 29. Oktober 1918 der neue südslawische Staat bildete und Österreich-Ungarn dadurch seinen Zugang zum Meer verlor, ordnete Kaiser Karl I. am 30. Oktober an, die k.u.k. Kriegsflotte den Südslawen zu übergeben. Am 31. Oktober 1918 nahm Konteradmiral Horthy in Pola befehlsgemäß die Übergabe vor: Die österreichische Kriegsflagge wurde eingeholt, die südslawische aufgezogen, südslawische Marineoffiziere übernahmen das Kommando. Dennoch wurde das Schlachtschiff SMS Viribus Unitis, das nunmehr „Jugoslavia" hieß und nach wie vor der Stolz der Flotte war, am 1.
