The Rutles Intro
Post Monty Python, Eric Idle had a tv show about the Rutles, aka the Prefab Four: Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry, who were quite a lot like the Beatles, only sillier. Here, Eric Idle introduces the phenomenon and shows some of their highlights.

The Rutles - All I need is Cash (German Subbed / Deutsche Untertitel)

The Rutles is a soundtrack album to the 1978 telemovie All You Need Is Cash. The album contains over 14 of the tongue-in-cheek, pastiches of Beatles' songs that were featured in the film.
Multiple listenings are required to discern all the sources referenced in titles, lyrics, melodies, and song structures. The primary creative force of the Rutles music was Neil Innes, the sole composer and arranger of the songs. Innes had been the 'seventh' member of Monty Python, as well as one of the main artists behind the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band in the late 1960s, who had been featured in the real Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour movie performing "Death Cab For Cutie".
Innes himself credits the three musicians he recruited to assist him on the project as having been enormously important in helping him capture the feel of The Beatles. Guitarist/singer Ollie Halsall and drummer John Halsey had played together in the groups Timebox and Patto. Multi-instrumentalist Rikki Fataar had played with The Flames before joining the Beach Boys in the early 1970s.
Eric Idle is not heard at all on the music soundtrack of the film. He did not play or sing on any of the recordings. He is skillful at lip-syncing the "Dirk" vocals that were in fact sung by Ollie Halsall. Innes says that Idle, who had recently had an appendectomy, offered to help but was encouraged to recuperate. Were it not for the inherently ironic lyrics, it might be difficult to distinguish the songs from true Beatles numbers (indeed, the 1978 Beatles bootleg Indian Rope Trick included The Rutles' "Cheese and Onions", incorrectly — and perhaps jokingly — attributing it to John Lennon). In the early 1980s, Innes was accused by one American Beatle fan of stealing unreleased Beatles tracks to use in the film; this was based on a recording of "Cheese And Onions" obtained by the fan which he believed to be by John Lennon. When the recording was played to Innes, he was amused to discover that it was actually his own demo of the song, a tribute to his skills as a parodist.
The songs written by Innes so cleverly parodied the original source material that he was taken to court by the owners of The Beatles' catalogue. Innes had to testify under oath that he had not listened to the songs at all while composing The Rutles songs, but had created them completely originally based on what he remembered various Beatles songs sounding like at different times.
The album contains some obvious send-ups of Beatles numbers such as "Ouch!" ("Help!"), "Love Life" ("All You Need is Love"), "Piggy in the Middle" ("I Am the Walrus") and "Doubleback Alley" ("Penny Lane"). "Get Up And Go" was not on the original LP (allegedly after John Lennon warned Innes that it resembled "Get Back" too closely, which might prompt McCartney to sue) but was included on the CD reissue. Many of the other songs require a thorough understanding of The Beatles' entire discography in order to decipher which song(s) they most resemble, as Innes' goal was to compose pastiche-like parody songs.
All songs were actually written by Neil Innes. Songwriter attributions are the "fictional" writing credits listed as they would have been in the "Rutles universe." Reflecting the balance of songwriting credits on most Beatles albums, the vast majority of the songs are credited to Ron Nasty and Dirk McQuickly (the "Lennon--McCartney" of The Rutles), with one composition each credited to the rivals for "George" (Stig O'Hara) and "Ringo" (Barry Wom). The liner notes of the album give the names of the Warner Brothers as "Stan & Reg".
The only song from the film not on the soundtrack is "You Need Feet", which is not a Rutles song. It was written and performed by comedian Bernard Bresslaw.

The Rutles' 'I Must be in Love' from the 'The Rutles' spin-off from Rutland Weekend Television. Neil Innes and Eric Idle starred as the Lennon and McCartney figures. Neil and Eric produced many comedy characters including the Fabulous Bingo Brothers, while Neil Innes is noted for his hilarious take on protest singers in the 'Old Grey Whistle Test' spoof of a Protest Song.
Rutland Weekend Television was a television sketch show on BBC2, written by Eric Idle with music by Neil Innes. Two series, the first consisting of six episodes, the second of seven, were broadcast, in 1975 and 1976. A Christmas special also aired on Boxing Day 1975.
It was Idle's first television project after Monty Python's Flying Circus ended the previous year. The show is perhaps best known as the catalyst for The Rutles. The show/s have never been made available for DVD but can still be obtained in video format.
Rutland Weekend Television or RWT centred on "Britain's smallest television network", situated in England's smallest (and mainly rural) county, Rutland.
The show's title alludes to the small and real television broadcaster London Weekend Television . A Rutland TV station would be pretty small, so a Rutland Weekend Television would have to be ridiculously tiny. The joke was doubly meaningful, as instead of a light entertainment budget, Idle had accidentally been granted a presentation budget — not sketch comedy — so the weekly patter about their inability to buy props and sets was quite real. Indeed the last show of the first series featured Idle and Innes, stripped and shivering in blankets under a bare bulb, singing about how the power's about to be shut off. Idle speaks bitterly about these conditions now but his attempts to overcome them formed the basis of a lot of the show's best jokes.
Idle, in a 1975 Radio Times interview, remarked, 'It was made on a shoestring budget, and someone else was wearing the shoe. The studio is the same size as the weather forecast studio and nearly as good. We had to bring the sets up four floors for each scene, then take them down again. While the next set was coming up, we'd change our make-up. Every minute mattered. It's not always funny to be funny from ten in the morning until ten at night. As for ad-libbing, what ad-libbing? 'You don't ad-lib when you're working with three cameras and anyway the material goes out months after you've made it.'

The Rutles Archaeology is an album by the comedy band The Rutles. Like their previous release, the album contains pastiches of Beatles' songs.
Three of the four musicians who had created the soundtrack for the 1978 film — Neil Innes, John Halsey, and Ricky Fataar — reunited in 1996 and recorded a second album, Archaeology, an affectionate send-up of The Beatles Anthology albums (while its original cover design rather parodied that of The Beatles' Past Masters singles compilation, though). The fourth 'real' Rutle, Ollie Halsall, died in Spain in 1992. Eric Idle was invited to participate, but declined.
Like the Anthology project that it lampooned, it featured tracks ostensibly from all periods of the Rutles' career, sequenced to reflect the fictional band's chronology. Several of the songs were actually older Innes songs that were dusted off and given the "Rutles" treatment. The reunion was blessed by George Harrison, who encouraged The Pre-Fab Four to proceed. (When approached, he told Innes, 'Sure. It's all part of the "soup"...', an encounter that Innes related in interviews in 1996.)
The reunion was triggered by Innes's appearance at the Los Angeles festival "Monty Python: Lust For Glory!", celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Monty Python troupe produced by Martin Lewis for the American Cinematheque. Innes performed two sold-out gigs at Los Angeles's Troubadour Club under the name "Ron Nasty & The New Rutles", using a local Beatles tribute band.
Following the success of the shows, Lewis and Innes collaborated on the project that became Archaeology.
All songs were credited solely to Innes; all lead vocals by Innes except for Fataar on tracks 5 and 13, and Halsey on tracks 2 and 8.
The Japanese release of Archaeology includes 4 bonus tracks: "Lullaby", "Baby S'il Vous Plait", "It's Looking Good" (rehearsal), and "My Little Ukulele". "Baby S'il Vous Plait" and "It's Looking Good" were also issued (along with the LP version of "Joe Public") on a UK CD single and 10" of "Shangri-La."
"Baby S'il Vous Plait" was a 'cod' Franglais version of an earlier Rutles song "Baby Let Me Be", from the 1978 soundtrack. The song was recorded as a pastiche of the Beatles' two German-language recordings of "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand", with suitably poor translation and even poorer foreign accents. "My Little Ukelele" was a George Formby-esque novelty number, melding McCartney's many experiments with old-time composition ("Honey Pie", "When I'm 64" etc.) with Harrison's fondness for Formby and the ukelele. "Lullaby" was a brief musical gag from Innes's own live act re-recorded as though it were Ron Nasty amusing the studio staff.
On February 19, 2007, EMI Gold (UK) released a budget reissue of Archaeology with new cover artwork and five bonus tracks: The aforementioned "Lullaby," "My Little Ukelele," and "Baby S'il Vous Plait" surfaced again, and two previously unreleased numbers — "Under My Skin" and "Rut-A-Lot" (the latter a medley of Rutles songs performed live by Innes, rumoured to be a jab at Idle's recently' successful Spamalot) — made their first appearances. "Under My Skin" is a cover of Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin", sung with some questionably re-tooled lyrics (the song is accidentally credited to Innes as sole writer).

"The Rutles":
Ricky Fataar (Beach Boys) = George Harrison
John Halsey (Joan-Armatrading-Band) = Ringo Starr
Den Originalen fast ebenbürtige Songs: "Ouch!", "Let's Be Natural", "A Hard Day's Rut", "Doubleback Alley" oder "I Am a Waitress".

The Rutles (The Prefab Four) are a band known for their visual and aural pastiches and parodies of the Beatles.
This originally fictional band, created by Eric Idle and Neil Innes for 1970s television programming, became an actual group (while remaining a parody of the Beatles) and toured and recorded, releasing many songs and albums that included two U.K. chart hits.
Created as a short sketch in Idle's UK television comedy series Rutland Weekend Television, the Rutles gained fame after being the focus of the 1978 mockumentary television film, All You Need Is Cash (The Rutles).
Actual Beatle George Harrison notably appeared in the film and assisted in its creation. Encouraged by the positive public reaction to the sketch, featuring Beatles' music pastiches by Neil Innes, the film was written by Idle, who co-directed it with Gary Weis.
It had 20 songs written by Innes, which he performed with three musicians as "The Rutles". A soundtrack album in 1978 was followed in 1996 by Archaeology, which spoofed the Beatles' Anthology series which had recently been released.
A second film, "The Rutles 2: Can't Buy Me Lunch" — modelled on the 2000 TV special The Beatles Revolution — was made in 2002 and released in the US on DVD in 2003.

The Rutles, a hilarious spoof of The Beatles and the brainchild of Monty Python's Eric Idle, made their first appearance in a short film on Saturday Night Live. Audience response was so overwhelming that SNL producer Lorne Michaels decided to go ahead with a full production, All You Need Is Cash, which originally aired on NBC-TV in the spring of 1978 - six years before the more famous "mockumentary" Spinal Tap. The extravaganza starred Idle and Neil Innes (the latter of whom wrote all of the music) and featured special guests Mick Jagger, Ron Wood, Paul Simon, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, and even ex-Beatle George Harrison. Follow four mop-topped young Brits whose right choice of trousers (tight) gets them a lifetime recording contract despite their lack of musical ability. Overcoming that, they go on to produce monumental albums like Sgt. Rutter's Only Darts Club Band, along with appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and a concert at Che Stadium, cementing their world domination of pop music. But, as with their Fab Four namesake, artistic differences and various other problems threaten to derail Rutlemania. Don't miss The Rutles' wonderfully warped songs "Hold My Hand," "Love Life," "Ouch!," "Piggy In The Middle," "Cheese And Onions," "Get Up And Go," and many other familiar-sounding tunes.
