The Western world, also known as the West and the Occident (from Latin: occidens "sunset, West"; as contrasted with the Orient), is a term referring to different nations depending on the context. There is no agreed upon definition about what all these nations have in common.
Though the term originally had a literal geographic meaning and contrasted Europe with the cultures of the Orient or Asia, today the term West does not imply geographic location, as most of Europe and Oceania, major components of the West, lie in the Eastern Hemisphere.[citation needed]
The concept of the Western part of the earth has its roots in Greco-Roman civilization in Europe, with the advent of Christianity. In the modern era, Western culture has been heavily influenced by the traditions of The Renaissance, The Protestant Reformation, The Enlightenment, and shaped by the expansive colonialism of the 16th-20th centuries. Its political usage was temporarily informed by a mutual antagonism with the Soviet bloc during the Cold War in the mid-to-late 20th Century (1945–1991).
Kanye Omari West (/ˈkɑːnjeɪ/; born June 8, 1977) is an American musician, film director and fashion designer. West first rose to fame as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records, where he eventually achieved recognition for his work on Jay-Z's album The Blueprint, as well as hit singles for musical artists including Alicia Keys, Ludacris, and Janet Jackson. His style of production originally used pitched-up vocal samples from soul songs incorporated with his own drums and instruments. However, subsequent productions saw him broadening his musical palette and expressing influences encompassing '70s R&B, baroque pop, trip hop, arena rock, folk, alternative, electronica, synthpop, and classical music.
West released his debut album The College Dropout in 2004, his second album Late Registration in 2005, his third album Graduation in 2007, his fourth album 808s & Heartbreak in 2008, and his fifth album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in 2010. West released a collaborative album, Watch the Throne with Jay-Z in 2011, which is the duo's first collaborative album. His five solo albums, all of which have gone platinum, have received numerous awards and critical acclaim. As of 2012, West has won a total of eighteen Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded artists of all-time. All albums have been very commercially successful, with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy becoming his fourth consecutive No. 1 album in the U.S. upon release. West has had 5 songs exceed 3 million in digital sales as of July 2011, with "Gold Digger" selling 3,086,000, "Stronger" selling 4,402,000, "Heartless" selling 3,742,000, "E.T." selling over 4,000,000 and "Love Lockdown" selling over 3,000,000 placing him third in overall digital sales of the past decade. He has sold over 30 million digital songs in the United States making him one of the best-selling digital artists of all-time.

The foreign ministers spoke of substantial progress after meeting in London. They said the ball's now in Iran's court to take tough decisions for negotiations to progress. The ministers said they will only subscribe to a deal that is comprehensive, durable and verifiable. They also played down reports of discord in their ranks amid indications that France and the US have divided positions regarding talks with Iran. Washington and Tehran concluded six days of intensive negotiations in Lausanne on Friday. The P5+1 group of countries and Iran will resume their talks on Wednesday to try to reach a framework of understanding before a March 31 deadline.

The US and other Western powers have rejected calls to restore ties with Assad's government. Syria has been grappling with a devastating war since 2011, with the West backing insurgent groups fighting to topple the government.

Switzerland: "Self-interested western powers must let Ukrainians decide their destiny," says Lavrov
Video ID: 20141205-017
W/S Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on stage
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Foreign Minister of Russia (in Russian): "I suggest we use the Normandy format to urge our Ukrainian partners to solve the country's systematic problems, which is about organising life in the country while fully respecting the traditions, culture and all regions of the country. It is senseless to discuss issues around the Minsk agreements without militia representatives. Our western colleagues, some Europeans but the Americans in particular, would like Russia to represent the self-defence forces in one format or the other. But that's a purely ideological approach. If they want to blame us as the main cause, if they want to create a forum where we will participate in that way, that is not right and will not work. It should not be about satisfying their ideological interests, but about the destiny of the Ukrainian people."

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Foreign Minister of Russia (in Russian): "The Normandy format was indeed very efficient, especially addressing the gas problems for example. An agreement was reached but then the western participants of the Normandy format couldn't find the money to help Ukraine to get through one and a half or two months. You all know that history."

The western powers are ideologically motivated in their policy over Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Basel on Friday, singling the U.S. and "some" European countries out for criticism.
Speaking at a press conference at the 21st OSCE Ministerial Council, Lavrov said Russia cannot represent East Ukrainians, arguing they must be given the position and platform to represent themselves.
The Russian foreign minister added that talks could be held in the so-called "Normandy format," which he deemed useful during gas talks before western participants failed to provide the money originally promised to Ukraine.

How should the West deal with Putin’s Russia? For the U.S. and some European powers the answer is obvious: isolate Russia with punishing economic sanctions, remove it from global institutions such as the G8, and arm the nations directly threatened by Putin. In short, return to the Cold War doctrine that froze Soviet aggression in Europe and helped bring about the collapse of communist Russia. Others argue that such a policy is a dead-end. Putin’s Russia has legitimate grievances against Western and NATO powers meddling in its sphere of influence. In a state of "total war", the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah, had ambition to create the United States of Africa. He wanted Ghana to be a prosperous and powerful industrial nation that could compete with major western powers in science and technology. That didn't happen in real life, but I plan to make it happen in a video game.
The goal of this campaign is to unite western Africa to create a hyper-advanced superpower. But first, we have a lot of dictators to depose.

Kimberly Marten presents:
What is driving Russia’s foreign policy under President Vladimir Putin, and what are the implications for Canada, the US, and Europe? Kimberly Marten argues that two factors are crucial in explaining Putin’s choices: a deep Russian sense of historical betrayal and humiliation at the hands of western powers, dating back centuries; and the snake-pit of informal political patronage networks that seethes below the Kremlin’s surface. She will discuss what these mean for the future of Ukraine, among other current issues.

Do executive branch officials in the federal and state governments have an obligation to defend the law? In 2011 the Justice Department decided that it could no longer defend constitutionality of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in federal court. Since then, several state Attorneys General followed suit, refusing to defend state laws barring the recognition of same-sex marriage. In Oh

A railroad representative named Barshee (Brian Donlevy) forces farmers to give up the land the railroad is going to go through, giving them $1 per acre (much less than fair price) for it. When they come to Jesse's home, Jesse (Tyrone Power) tells Barshee that his mother Mrs Samuels (Jane Darwell) is the farm's owner. Barshee repeatedly tries to force her into selling, until her other son Frank James (Henry Fonda) gets involved. Frank fights and easily beats Barshee, but Barshee's men get involved and Jesse shoots him in the hand. When arrest warrants are issued for Frank and Jesse, Major A. Rufus Cobb (Henry Hull) editor in nearby Liberty, Missouri and uncle of Zerelda (Zee) Cobb (Nancy Kelly), Jesse's lover, quickly comes to tell them to leave. Frank and Jesse learn that Barshee is responsible for the death of their mother and Jesse kills him in revenge. This begins Frank and Jesse's career as outlaws. Three years later, with a $5,000 reward on his head, Jesse marries Zee and turns himself in, having been promised a light sentence by Marshall Will Wright (Randolph Scott). But the judge overrules Marshall Wright's recommendation and Jesse is given a stiff sentence. Frank breaks Jesse out of jail but is captured in the process. Jesse continues his life of crime and eventually Zee leaves him, taking their son Jesse Jr. Years later, a wounded Jesse returns home and Zee joins him in the belief that they will escape to California. Meanwhile, Frank has escaped and sends Bob Ford (John Carradine) to Jesse with a message. But Bob Ford betrays and kills Jesse instead.

These made World War II the deadliest conflict in human history.[4]
The Empire of Japan aimed to dominate Asia and the Pacific and was already at war with the Republic of China in 1937,[5] but the world war is generally said to have begun on 1 September 1939[6] with the invasion of Poland by Germany and subsequent declarations of war on Germany by France and the United Kingdom. From late 1939 to early 1941, in a series of campaigns and treaties, Germany conquered or controlled much of continental Europe, and formed the Axis alliance with Italy and Japan. Following the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, Germany and the Soviet Union partitioned and annexed territories of their European neighbours, including Poland, Finland and the Baltic states. The United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth were the only Allied forces continuing the fight against the Axis, with campaigns in North Africa and the Horn of Africa as well as the long-running Battle of the Atlantic. In June 1941, the European Axis powers launched an invasion of the Soviet Union, opening the largest land theatre of war in history, which trapped the major part of the Axis' military forces into a War of Attrition. In December 1941, Japan attacked the United States and European territories in the Pacific Ocean, and quickly conquered much of the Western Pacific.
The Axis advance halted in 1942 when Japan lost the critical Battle of Midway, near Hawaii, and Germany was defeated in North Africa and then, decisively, at Stalingrad in the Soviet Union. In 1943, with a series of German defeats on the Eastern Front, the Allied invasion of Italy which brought about Italian surrender, and Allied victories in the Pacific, the Axis lost the initiative and undertook strategic retreat on all fronts. In 1944, the Western Allies invaded France, while the Soviet Union regained all of its territorial losses and invaded Germany and its allies. During 1944 and 1945 the Japanese suffered major reverses in mainland Asia in South Central China and Burma, while the Allies crippled the Japanese Navy and captured key Western Pacific islands.
The war in Europe ended with an invasion of Germany by the Western Allies and the Soviet Union culminating in the capture of Berlin by Soviet and Polish troops and the subsequent German unconditional surrender on 8 May 1945. Following the Potsdam Declaration by the Allies on 26 July 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 August and 9 August respectively. With an invasion of the Japanese archipelago imminent, the possibility of additional atomic bombings, and the Soviet Union's declaration of war on Japan and invasion of Manchuria, Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945. Thus ended the war in Asia, and the final destruction of the Axis bloc.
World War II altered the political alignment and social structure of the world. The United Nations (UN) was established to foster international co-operation and prevent future conflicts. The victorious great powers—the United States, the Soviet Union, China, the United Kingdom, and France—became the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.[7] The Soviet Union and the United States emerged as rival superpowers, setting the stage for the Cold War, which lasted for the next 46 years. Meanwhile, the influence of European great powers waned, while the decolonisation of Asia and Africa began. Most countries whose industries had been damaged moved towards economic recovery. Political integration, especially in Europe, emerged as an effort to end pre-war enmities and to create a common identity.[8]
ОписWorld War II (WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, though related conflicts began earlier. It involved the vast majority of the world's nations—including all of the great powers—eventually forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, and directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of "total war", the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by mass deaths of civilians, including the Holocaust (during which approximately 11 million people were killed)[1][2] and the strategic bombing of industrial and population centres (during which approximately one million people were killed, including the use of two nuclear weapons in combat),[3] it resulted in an estimated 50 million to 85 million fatalities. The West vs. Russia
Be it resolved the West should engage not isolate Russia…
How should the West deal with Putin’s Russia? For the U.S. and some European powers the answer is obvious: isolate Russia with punishing economic sanctions, remove it from global institutions such as the G8, and arm the nations directly threatened by Putin. In short, return to the Cold War doctrine that froze Soviet aggression in Europe and helped bring about the collapse of communist Russia. Others argue that such a policy is a dead-end. Putin’s Russia has legitimate grievances against Western and NATO powers meddling in its sphere of influence. Instead of further antagonizing Putin and risking a dangerous escalation of the current conflict, the U.S. and Europe should seek common cause with Russia to address shared threats, from the Middle East to Asia to combatting terrorism.

Judge William H. Pryor Jr.
United States Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit
Do executive branch officials in the federal and state governments have an obligation to defend the law? In 2011 the Justice Department decided that it could no longer defend constitutionality of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in federal court. Since then, several state Attorneys General followed suit, refusing to defend state laws barring the recognition of same-sex marriage. In Ohio, Attorney General Mike DeWine filed a brief opposing the constitutionality of a state campaign law, even as the Attorney General’s office was defending the law in federal court. In this lecture, Judge Pryor will consider the obligation of government officials to defend validly enacted laws in light of established separation of powers principles, drawing on his experience as a state Attorney General, a federal judge, and a law professor.

Mali Militias Leave Key Northern Town Ahead of Peace Deal
BAMAKO Pro-government militias withdrew from a flashpoint town in northern Mali on Friday, removing a key obstacle to a long-delayed U.N.-backed peace deal due to be signed this weekend. Western powers are hoping Saturday's peace deal will help focus resources on fighting Islamist militants who are profiting from the chaos to launch attacks on U.N. and Malian targets. Security sources said. In a sign of the security challenges, unidentified men on motorbikes attacked a U.N. convoy near the town of Gao. The Malian army and sources from the U.N peacekeeping force confirmed their departure on Friday.

Russia has been embroiled in bitter disputes with major Western powers over high-profile military interventions - over Kosovo (1999), Iraq (2003), Georgia (2008), and even Libya (2011) which had a UN Security Council mandate. Moscow and the West reached much more agreement over the Gulf War (1990) and intervention in Afghanistan (2001), but these cases are exceptional. This interdisciplinary study explores the persistent differences between Russian and Western leaders about most Western-led military campaigns and about Russia's own use of force in the CIS region. The world is on the cusp of a global turn. Between 1500 and 1800, the West sprinted ahead of other centers of power in Asia and the Middle East. Europe and the United States have dominated the world since. But today the West's preeminence is slipping away as China, India, Brazil and other emerging powers rise. Although most strategists recognize that the dominance of the West is on the wane, they are confident that its founding ideas--democracy, capitalism, and secular nationalism--will continue to spread, ensuring that the Western order will outlast its primacy. According to German detective Josef Resch, a whistleblower has come forward with information about the fatal 2014 crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in Ukraine. The information makes the source eligible for a reward of $47 million.
While Western powers have strongly claimed that pro-Russian forces shot the flight with a BUK surface-to-air missile, there has not been any conclusive evidence to support that. According to the Kremlin, it was the Ukrainian military that shot down the Boeing passenger jet carrying 298 people.
Al Arabiya reported that the anonymous source revealed that pro-Russian

Iran and six world powers tried to break an impasse in nuclear negotiations on Sunday, but officials cautioned that attempts to reach a preliminary deal by a deadline in two days could yet fall apart.
The two sides explored compromises in areas including numbers of centrifuges used to enrich uranium that Iran could operate, and its nuclear enrichment work for medical research.
But Israel, which feels especially threatened by the possibility of a nuclear-armed Iran, said the details of a possible framework agreement emerging from the talks in the Swiss city of Lausanne were

Earlier, Iran's president spoke positively about reaching agreement.

Russia, the West, and Military Intervention — Download
Download Here: http://tinyurl.com/pn26gwm
Russia has been embroiled in bitter disputes with major Western powers over high-profile military interventions - over Kosovo (1999), Iraq (2003), Georgia (2008), and even Libya (2011) which had a UN Security Council mandate. Moscow and the West reached much more agreement over the Gulf War (1990) and intervention in Afghanistan (2001), but these cases are exceptional. This interdisciplinary study explores the persistent differences between Russian and Western leaders about most Western-led military campaigns and about Russia's own use of force in the CIS region. What does this tell us about emerging norms on the use of force in humanitarian crises? How and why has there been such controversy over the legal justifications for these military operations? Has greater consensus been possible over force in global counterterrorism? What do all these controversies tell us about international rule-making? More specifically, how can we understand Russian political and diplomatic responses during international crises around major interventions? This book argues that Russia has been influential in these debates on norms and law as a permanent United Nations Security Council member and as a major military power. Moscow's approach to these questions has reflected distinctive and quite entrenched attitudes to international order and sovereignty, as well as a preoccupation with its own status. The book draws deeply on Russian sources to show how these attitudes are expressed among the Russian leadership and the political elite. This raises challenging questions about the ability of Russia and Western states to cooperate in emerging crises, in Syria, Iran, or elsewhere and about Russia's role in international society.

No One's World: The West, the Rising Rest, and the Coming Global Turn (Council o — Download
Download Here: http://tinyurl.com/pckcxts
The world is on the cusp of a global turn. Between 1500 and 1800, the West sprinted ahead of other centers of power in Asia and the Middle East. Europe and the United States have dominated the world since. But today the West's preeminence is slipping away as China, India, Brazil and other emerging powers rise. Although most strategists recognize that the dominance of the West is on the wane, they are confident that its founding ideas--democracy, capitalism, and secular nationalism--will continue to spread, ensuring that the Western order will outlast its primacy. In No One's World, Charles A. Kupchan boldly challenges this view, arguing that the world is headed for political and ideological diversity; emerging powers will neither defer to the West's lead nor converge toward the Western way. The ascent of the West was the product of social and economic conditions unique to Europe and the United States. As other regions now rise, they are following their own paths to modernity and embracing their own conceptions of domestic and international order. Kupchan contends that the Western order will not be displaced by a new great power or dominant political model. The twenty-first century will not belong to America, China, Asia, or anyone else. It will be no one's world. For the first time in history, an interdependent world will be without a center of gravity or global guardian. More than simply diagnosing what lies ahead, Kupchan provides a detailed strategy for striking a bargain between the West and the rising rest by fashioning a new consensus on issues of legitimacy, sovereignty, and governance. Thoughtful, provocative, sweeping in scope, this work is nothing less than a global guidebook for the 21st century.

German Detective Claims Solving MH17 Mystery
According to German detective Josef Resch, a whistleblower has come forward with information about the fatal 2014 crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in Ukraine. The information makes the source eligible for a reward of $47 million.
While Western powers have strongly claimed that pro-Russian forces shot the flight with a BUK surface-to-air missile, there has not been any conclusive evidence to support that. According to the Kremlin, it was the Ukrainian military that shot down the Boeing passenger jet carrying 298 people.
Al Arabiya reported that the anonymous source revealed that pro-Russian forces had shot Flight MH17 with a missile in Ukraine. It also reported that the source told the German investigator that the separatists had mistaken the flight for a military aircraft.
Resch, head of Wifka, the company investigating the crash, has refused to name his source, however. Nor

Israel alarmed as Iran, world powers explore nuclear compromises
Israel alarmed as Iran, world powers explore nuclear compromises
Iran and six world powers tried to break an impasse in nuclear negotiations on Sunday, but officials cautioned that attempts to reach a preliminary deal by a deadline in two days could yet fall apart.
The two sides explored compromises in areas including numbers of centrifuges used to enrich uranium that Iran could operate, and its nuclear enrichment work for medical research.
But Israel, which feels especially threatened by the possibility of a nuclear-armed Iran, said the details of a possible framework agreement emerging from the talks in the Swiss city of Lausanne were even worse than it feared.
The six powers – the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China – want at least a 10-year suspension of Iran’s most sensitive nuclear work. Tehran, which denies it trying to develop a nuclear weapons capability, is demanding an end to international sanctions that are crippling its economy.
Officials warned that deep disagreements remained over several sticking points in Lausanne. Nevertheless, they said that in recent days the two sides have been closing in on a preliminary deal that could be summarized in a brief document of several pages that may or may not be released.
Several officials told Reuters that Tehran had indicated a willingness to cut the number of centrifuges it uses to fewer than 6,000, thereby slowing its program, and to send most of its enriched uranium stockpiles for storage in Russia.
Western powers, on the other hand, were considering the idea of allowing Iran to conduct limited, closely-monitored enrichment-related work for medical purposes at an underground facility, the officials added on condition of anonymity.
Iran had originally insisted on keeping in operation the nearly 10,000 centrifuges it currently uses, but said in November that Washington indicated it could accept around 6,000. Iranian officials say they had been pushing for 6,500-7,000.
All parts of an emerging nuclear deal are interrelated. “Everything could still fall apart,” a Western official told Reuters, adding that the talks could drag on to Tuesday, the self-imposed deadline for a framework agreement.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Arachi also said the outcome was uncertain. “All sides are working hard to resolve remaining issues but there is still a long way to go,” he told reporters.
A main sticking point is Iran’s demand that it continue with research into a new generation of advanced centrifuges. These machines can purify uranium faster and in greater quantities for use in nuclear power plants or, if very highly enriched, in weapons.
Another question is over the speed of removing United Nations sanctions on Iran. A senior U.S. official said there were unresolved questions on other issues but expected those would fall into place if the big sticking points could be worked out.
The U.S. official added that the negotiators were working towards something that would be called an “understanding,” as opposed to a formal agreement.
Such a deal would form the basis of a comprehensive deal, including all technical details, to be tied up by June 30.
The powers’ aim is to ensure that Iran is kept at least one year away from the ability to produce enough fissile nuclear material for a single weapon for at least 10 years.
Israel furious
“We’re hopeful, but there is still a lot of work to be done,” French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters on Sunday. His remarks contrasted to hostility from Israel, which is believed to have the Middle East’s only nuclear arsenal but is not a party to the talks.
“This deal, as it appears to be emerging, bears out all of our fears, and even more than that,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his cabinet in Jerusalem.
Netanyahu referred to advances made by Houthi rebels allied to Tehran in Yemen, and accused the Islamic republic of trying to “conquer the entire Middle East.”
“The Iran-Lausanne-Yemen axis is very dangerous to humanity, and must be stopped,” he said.
In the past, Israel has threatened to attack Iran if it is not happy with an eventual deal and has long described France as the negotiating power with a position closest to its own, a view confirmed by officials close to the talks.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who met Fabius in Lausanne on Sunday, said there was now positive momentum towards a comprehensive agreement. However, “some outstanding differences remain obstacles in the negotiation process,” his ministry quoted him as saying.
Fabius, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier have all canceled travel plans so they could remain in Lausanne to continue the talks at a ministerial level. If there is a deal, the talks may shift to Geneva for the announcement.
Their Russian and British counterparts are expected in Lausanne soon.

BBC News - Iran nuclear Western powers promise 'no bad deal'
Western powers negotiating an agreement with Iran on its nuclear activity will not accept "a bad deal", UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond says.
Ministers from France, Germany, and the UK along with the US Secretary of State met in London amid increased urgency to reach agreement by the end of March.
Six world powers want to ensure that Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons - something it denies doing.
Earlier, Iran's president spoke positively about reaching agreement.
"There is nothing that cannot be resolved," although some differences still remain, Iranian state media quoted President Hassan Rouhani as saying.
Mr Rouhani said that in the current round of talks in Lausanne, Switzerland, "shared points of view emerged in some of the areas where there had been a difference of opinion" and these could become "a foundation for a final agreement".
Speaking after Saturday's talks in London, Mr Hammond said: "We will not do a bad deal that does not meet our red lines."
An official statement from the meeting said: "We agreed that substantial progress had been made (with Iran) in key areas although there are still important issues on which no agreement has yet been possible.
"Now is the time for Iran, in particular, to take difficult decisions."
The four powers, along with China and Russia, make up the so-called P5+1 which is negotiating with Iran to scale back sensitive nuclear activities in return for an easing of international economic sanctions.
Both Iran and the Western powers have set themselves deadlines of 31 March for a political framework agreement and 30 June for a final deal.
US Secretary of State John Kerry also said that "substantial progress" had been made in the talks although "important gaps" remained.
Mr Kerry flew to London from Switzerland and will return there to resume talks with Iran next week.
But in a reminder of more hardline attitudes within the Iranian leadership, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned on Saturday against submitting to foreign demands in order to achieve economic growth.
Sticking points in the nuclear talks are thought to include the pace at which sanctions would be lifted, how long the deal will last and how much of Iran's nuclear facilities will be open to inspection.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says he is awaiting "actions" from the US, a day after US Secretary of State John Kerry said negotiations to end the country's conflict should include him.
While western-backed opposition and rebel groups continue to push for the Syrian leader to step down, Assad on Monday said that talks on his future should be a decision made by the Syrian people alone.

Comments by officials from Germany, the United States, Ukraine and Russia, all attending a major security conference in Munich on Saturday, indicate there are still big gaps between the U.S. and European view of the Ukraine crisis, on the one hand, and Russia's position, on the other. Western powers united in approach over Iran nuclear talks
The US, Britain, France and Germany say they are united in purpose to secure a successful outcome from talks with Iran over its nuclear program.

Ja'afari: Western powers should accept President Bashar al-Assad is here to stay
Bashar Ja'afari made the comments in an interview with Reuters on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the Syrian war. He said the US and its allies need to abandon the failed strategy of trying to split the Middle East into sectarian enclaves. Ja'afari added that Syria has been and is always ready to combat terrorism in the Middle East. He insisted that Damascus will resist pressures and will prevent any power vacuum that would create chaos in the country. The US and other Western powers have rejected calls to restore ties with Assad's government. Syria has been grappling with a devastating war since 2011, with the West backing insurgent groups fighting to topple the government.

W/S Sergei Lavrov leaving
SCRIPT

Munk Debates - The West vs. Russia

World War II Best Historical Documentary HD 720p

Russia, the West, and Military Intervention — Download

Nor

With unrelenting deadly news from Eastern Ukraine, international diplomacy is having difficulty gaining traction.
We talked to Wolfgang Ischinger, German former special envoy to Ukraine for the Organisation for Security and Development in Europe, and then to Russian Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov, for their insight. The Antonov transcript will follow the first interview, here.
Ischinger chaired the Munich Security Conference (7-9 Feb. 2015).
