Exploring Penang (Georgetown): Things To Do in One Day

After our trip to Langkawi, we headed to Georgetown, in Penang, Malaysia. One day we walked around and did all these things in a single day. More coming on: http://migrationology.com/ Penang, Malaysia is an island just off the coast of the West Coast of Malaysia. It’s one of the most famous areas of Malaysia, especially known for its rich and diverse culture and for its food - many people come to Penang just to eat - as did I. Ying and I arrived to Penang from Langkawi, and we stayed in Penang for about a week, doing some work, and eating out way through the city. One day though, we decided to put on our shoes and go to visit as many of the attractions in the center of the city as we could. So this travel videos is an overview of the top things to do in Georgetown, Penang, but also a travel guide as well. Hope you enjoy to! To begin the day, I started off with a Penang tourist map and located all the places we wanted to go. Since we were staying close to the Georgetown World Heritage Inc., that’s where we first decided to stop. It’s more of an information center, so after just a few minutes we continued on our way to the Chew Jetty, one of the couple of Chinese docks where homes are built over the water. On the way though, we walked through Lebuh Armenian (one of the most famous streets in Penang), past George Town street art, and also briefly stopped at Cheah Kongsi. The Chew Jetty was a nice place to walk around for a few minutes, there wasn’t a lot to do there, but mostly some small souvenir shops and some nice places to take photos. We continued walking and passed the Queen Victory Lighthouse and then we continued on to Fort Cornwallis, a British built fort, and the only fort in Malaysia - though as they said it wasn’t ever used for battle. I was a little disappointed visiting Fort Cornwallis in Penang because we paid a pretty big entrance fee, but there really wasn’t anything to see inside - I could have seen it all from the outside. Anyway, we continued on walking around Penang, and then circled back past a cathedral. By this time we were getting quite hungry, so we headed into Little India, and then continued to a famous restaurant called Kapitan for tandoori chicken. I didn’t know they were really famous for their rice biryani, but I got a couple pieces of tandoori chicken and naan, it they were both incredible. In the afternoon, we first stopped at the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang, and walked around for a few minutes, and then continued on to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, one of Penang’s main attractions and a place I was really looking forward to visiting. Mr. Cheong, an insanely wealthy Chinese business man built the Blue Mansion and it has now been restored and it’s actually open as a hotel, but they also give a couple of guided tours each day. The tour took 45 minutes, and it was beautiful to see. The only thing I wish is that we could have seen a little more of the Blue Mansion, because unfortunately we didn’t get to see much, but mostly listened to the history of the mansion - still it was worth seeing in Penang. To finish of one day of things to do in Penang, Georgetown, we visited the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and then lastly we went to Khoo Kongsi. For dinner to end this day in Penang, we went to a restaurant to eat dim sum, and a few other Chinese dishes as well. Thank you for watching this “things to do in Geogetown, Penang” travel video. Nasi Kandar in Penang: Insanely Good Curry at Restoran Tajuddin Hussain

Read more now: http://wp.me/psd9b-5xG Since the very first time I visited Malaysia, nasi kandar has been one of my favorite meals in the country - or even in the world. What is nasi kandar? In Malay, nasi means rice and kandar is the word used for the bamboo pole carrying baskets. So the two words together refer to rice carried in baskets literally. But the word was formed when Indian rice and curry was served and delivered in this method previously. The words have stuck, and while most nasi kandar restaurants are housed in permanent restaurants, the name remains. So in reality, nasi kandar refers to Indian style rice and curry in Malaysia. Nasi kandar is originally from Penang, and while it’s available all over Malaysia now, most people still agree that the best place to eat it is right in Penang. There are many restaurants that served rice and Indian curry throughout the city, many of them are legendary places like Nasi Kandar Line Clear and Nasi Kandar Beratur. But I chose to eat at a restaurant called Restoran Tajuddin Hussain, located right on the edge of Little India in Georgetown. I had walked past the restaurant a number of times while we were in Penang, and seeing how it was always packed out with customers during lunch, my wife and I decided that we need to go there to eat. The next day we returned, a little bit early to beat the lunch rush and chose seats. As soon as I walked in, I could tell Tajuddin Hussain Nasi Kandar was going to be epic. All the food was positioned at the front of the restaurant, and you could either go up to the front to place your order, or you could just sit down at a table and let the waiter take your order - we sat down and ordered from the waiter. Honestly, I wanted to eat one of everything, to try every kind of curry they had, but we had to settle for a few of their signature dishes. The first curry I tried was their mutton curry, which set the bar. It was incredibly delicious, packed full of spice and flavor, rich and creamy, with a tender piece of mutton. Another dish we ordered was ayam rose, or chicken rose. It was equally as good, filled with spices, a tomatoey sauce, and just amazing with rice. My wife spotted the squid in the nasi kandar spread when we entered Restoran Tajuddin Hussain and so we also couldn’t resist ordering that. The squid was extremely tender and the gravy was spicy and flavorful. Additionally to all the Malaysian Indian curries, I got a plate of rice biryani for my base, and also a plate of vegetables and plate of daal to top things off. After finishing off round one of curry at Restoran Tajuddin Hussain, I still wanted more. We tried the mutton korma curry and we also go another plate of ayam rose because it was so good. The staff at the restaurant were friendly, the environment and atmosphere was authentic and action packed, and the food was almostly unbelievably delicious. One of the best meals you can eat when you’re in Penang, or even somewhere else in Malaysia, is nasi kandar, rice and an assortment of Indian style curry. Our meal at Restoran Tajuddin Hussain was one of the best nasi kandar meals that I’ve ever had in my life, and I’m still dreaming about the food there. This is one of the best restaurants I ate at in Penang, and hope you have a chance to eat here when you visit. Amazing Charcoal Steamboat in Penang

When my wife and I were in Penang, along with eating all sorts of marvelous street food, we also went to a few indoor restaurants. One evening, we decided to try an old school restaurant by the name of Goh Huat Seng Restaurant, specializing in what’s called “steamboat,” which is basically an old school hot pot. You can probably already tell from watching this video how steamboat got its name - the fire pot looks pretty much like a steamboat with its metal chimney. A hot pot steamboat is basically a round circular pot that’s shaped like a donut and elevated. Inside the middle of the pot there are hot charcoal coals that are placed, then the soup is placed around the edges of the pot in the trough, and finally a big chimney is placed on top to release the heat and extra smoke that comes out of the steamboat - it’s an amazing pot that keeps soup hot and boiling for hours as you enjoy your meal. Goh Huat Seng Restaurant in Penang is a seriously old school restaurant that has been serving Malaysian Chinese style steamboat for many years. Located right on Kimberly street, a famous place for Penang street food, Goh Huat Seng Restaurant still remains a very popular and very local Penang spot. They don’t really have a menu, but you basically just sit down and order a few sets of different ingredients. My wife and I got the 2 plate combination plate that came with a host of random goodies like shrimp, pork, meatballs, and a bunch of different vegetables. Our steamboat arrived in all its glory, and I could hardly contain my excitement for such a beautiful cooking device. The soup was nothing too crazy, just plain broth that had a fried garlic flavor. Likewise the ingredients were all plain and just boiled in the soup until cooked. They provided a sauce that included soy sauce, sliced chilies, and fried garlic. Though simple, it was surprising quite good, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve eaten a lot of hot pots in my days of living in Southeast Asia, but this old school Malaysian Chinese charcoal steamboat was pretty amazing. If you’re looking for a unique meal experience in Penang, a restaurant that’s not written in all the guidebooks, Goh Huat Seng Restaurant is a pretty cool spot. The food was plain as this type of hot pot normally is, but it was still good, and the experience was fantastic. After having an action packed trip to Langkawi, Ying and I arrived in Penang. On our first day, I had some work to do, so we didn’t go on a big street food adventure, but using the map on Foursquare, I found a restaurant called Lebuh Acheh Wantan Mee that served Penang wantan mee, and so we decided to go check it out. The Uncle and Aunty that ran the restaurant were extremely nice to us, and they had a choice of either pre fried wantan mee noodles or fresh egg noodles wantan mee. We decided to get one of each, plus a bowl of wantan dumplings in soup on the side. Malaysian wantan mee, which is sometimes referred to as kon lou or kon loh wantan mee, is a type of noodles hand-tossed in a black sauce made with dark soy sauce. After the noodles were boiled, the Uncle dished them into bowls and then tossed them within the sauce mixture, making sure to coat the noodles. The Aunty then topped each bowl of Penang wantan mee with slices of char siu bbq pork, a handful of blanched choi sum, fried wantan, and some green onions. I’ve eaten plenty of noodles, but I think this was my first time to try black sauce hand tossed noodles. I started off trying the pre-fried noodles, which were similar to instant packaged ramen noodles. At first I thought the fried noodles would be stir fried instead of boiled, but they were rather boiled, but just fried and dried before. The noodles had a crinkly texture and they were easy to chew. The sauce was slightly sweet, and to me it had a nice nutty flavor to it. The fresh egg noodles were dressed in the same exact dressing, but the noodles had a much different texture, that was much more silky and maybe a little more chewy. I think overall I preferred the fresh egg noodles better. Along with Penang kon lou wantan mee, they also had extra wantan dumplings at Lebuh Acheh Wantan Mee. To my delight, the wantan were probably my favorite items for lunch. The wantan were filled with minced pork and minced shrimp, and nice bits of water chestnut. But what I really like about them was that the bowl of soup was nicely flavored with sesame oil and sesame seeds - the dumplings were delicious. Lebuh Acheh Wantan Mee Address: Located on Lebuh Acheh in George Town, Penang, Malaysia Open hours: About 7 am – 1 pm daily, so it’s a place for breakfast or an early lunch Prices: Our bowls of wan tan mee cost 4 MYR each and the wantan dumplings were 1 MYR per piece, and we had a bowl with 5. Our total bill came to 13 MYR How to get there: Lebuh Acheh in George Town is parallel to Lebuh Armenian. Penang & Georgetown Malaysia Travel Guide, Little India, Penang Hill, Street Art, Clan Jetties

All we ever hear about Penang was EATING! Much to our surprise there was a lot more to do in Penang than just eat until you pop. Walking through the quaint streets of Georgetown was an adventure in itself. Penang is definitely a way different vibe compared to Kuala Lumpur. I got way more of a typical South East Asian city vibe out of Penang, and by that I mean, the smells, dirty streets, critters etc.. However, this didn't detract from an excellent experience of the city. The first thing we did was rent a motorbike and get a lay of the land. Aside from the beaches (which were nowhere near as nice as Langkawi: watch our video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqjZrlsQzBQ) most action in Penang takes place in and around Georgetown. Georgetown has famous street art scattered through the city and we spent an entire day on a scavenger hunt to find all these different murals and sculptures. They were really worth spending a day hunting down. Penang Hill was a great view of the city, but as you can see in the video the tram ride to the top is less than stellar. You are crammed in like sardines and once you get to the top there isn't much going on other than to get an excellent view and pictures of the city of Penang. Eating.... of course, this is what everyone will tell you to do in Penang and there was no shortage of awesome Indian Food. We ate the same Indian food 5 meals in a row I think. Aside from Indian there are several excellent Dim Sum places to check out. This was one of our first times eating Dim Sum and it was an experience to say the least. Luckily we had a friendly staff member explain how this works. If you don't know, it goes something kind of like this: Sit down at a table in a jam packed open air restaurant and several carts will be wheeled around continuously. As a cart approaches pick your Dim Sum. I lost count of how many different options there were, but our favorites were definitely the shrimp dim sum and the BBQ bun. On our last few days, I wasn’t sure what to try, so I was searching around and finally, using the Foursquare location search, I found a restaurant called Shing Kheang Aun Restaurant (新琼安饭店) that served Hainanese food in Penang, and it looked like a place I absolutely had to eat. People leaving reviews said it was a great restaurant, and one of the few remaining restaurants in Penang that served old school family style Hainanese food. The restaurant is a little hard to eat at because of the business hours, which I’m not sure if I fully know, but it seems like they sort of open and close without too much warning, and sometimes they are closed without warning - so you just kind of need to walk past and see if they are open or not. Shing Kheang Aun Restaurant (新琼安饭店) is located right in the heart of Georgetown, right in the heritage part of Penang, just off the main Chulia street. It’s also very close to the main touristy areas of the city, and yet this is a place that remains authentic, has a very family feel to it, and the food is absolutely stunning. One of the things I loved about Shing Kheang Aun Restaurant (新琼安饭店) is that there is no menu. You just talk to the waiter, who is part of the family, he will kind of recommend some dishes to you, and you can order them or not. I guess I really have no idea how many items they have on their menu, but whatever you get, I’m sure it will be good. I tried to order a few of the classic Hainanese dishes they serve at Shing Kheang Aun Restaurant (新琼安饭店). My wife and I started our meal with a big plate of tofu stir fried with leeks and minced pork. This dish was so simple, but it was so tasty. I believe it was fried with some minced pork for flavor, and it had a wonderful smoky wok flavor, and the tofu had a wonderful silky texture. We also ordered a dish of slices of pork, stir fried Hainanese style with black sweet soy sauce. Though this dish might not look extremely appetizing, it was fried just right. The sauce had a slight molasses flavor, and it was rich and slightly oily. Even though it wasn’t my favorite dish of our meal at this restaurant, it was still excellent. Next we tried a plate of assam prawns, big ocean prawns, which I think were either roasted or fried with assam sour sauce - which I believe was some kind of sour tamarind sauce. The prawns were incredibly meaty and fresh, and the dark glaze had an excellent slightly sour flavor to it. But the dish at Shing Kheang Aun Restaurant (新琼安饭店) that blew my mind and made it one of the best restaurants in Penang for me was the gulai tumis ikan, a sour tamarind fish curry made with pomfret. This was one of the most amazing dishes I ate in Penang. The flavor of the curry was sour and loaded with torch ginger flower. The fish was firm and meaty - pomfret is such a wonderful fish for making into curry. The fish curry Shing Kheang Aun Restaurant (新琼安饭店) was what elevated this meal to one of the best in Penang that I had. When I think of the most under-rated countries to visit in SE Asia Malaysia comes to mind. With a rich culture and diversity - unlike any other nation in Southeast Asia - there is something for everyone. Some of my favorite places to visit in Malaysia include Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Penang and the Cameron Highlands. The following is a top attractions travel guide for the best things to do in Malaysia: 1) Few architectural wonders can compete with the Petronas Towers. Equally as impressive by day as they are at night, it is an absolute must landmark to visit in Kuala Lumpur. 2) Night markets in Malaysia are well worth a visit. My personal favorite is the Jonker Street Night Market located in Melaka. On the weekends Jonker street shuts down to traffic and turns into a sea of people and stalls selling everything from trinkets to street food. While we were there we made sure to cool down with Cendol, which is our favorite Malaysian street food snack. 3) The Batu Caves are of my favorite attractions that is absolutely free! Taking the commuter train from KL Sentral we arrived early in the morning before all of the package tourists. The caves themselves, an important Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan, are worth the 272 step climb to the top. You'll notice many of cheeky monkeys along the way. 4) The KL Bird Park is a quirky attraction worth checking out. Its claim to fame is being the largest walk in aviary. Home to thousands of birds you'll be able to spot peacocks, flamingos and many other exotic ones. It's not the cheapest attraction but I would say it it worth the price of admission if you plan to stay for several hours. 5) While you're in Georgetown, Penang consider visiting a recently opened cat cafe! The Purrfect Cat Cafe in George Town is home to some adorable cats just waiting to be petted. For the price of a small meal or drink you'll be able to sit down and play with them. 6) Whenever I head back to Malaysia I can't help but break out in a smile because I know I'm going to get a chance to eat dim sum again. My favorite place is in George Town and along with Chinese tea I can't really control myself. 7) When I mentioned Malaysia was a diverse country, I was referring to the people and cuisine. Indian food is one of my favorite cuisines and having the opportunity to eat a delicious banana leaf thali set is something I wouldn't miss for the world. Loaded up with rice, dal, vegetables, roti, papad, chutney and pickles. Coming in at only 22 Ringgit (for the two of us) it's an inexpensive but delicious meal. 8) Want to visit the biggest Buddhist temple in all of Southeast Asia? Would you be surprised to learn that it is in Malaysia? Kek Lok Si temple, also known as the Temple of Supreme Bliss, is located in Air Itam. The temple combines Mahayana Buddhism and Chinese rituals. To visit take bus 201, 203 or 204 from Komplex Komptar in the heart of George Town, Penang. 9) The Petronas Towers are brilliant by day but 'wow' do they ever shine bright at night. They have really cool light shows that takes place. 10) You can't visit Malaysia without having Roti Canai for breakfast, lunch, dinner and/or a snack. An Indian flat bread, similar to a pancake, it comes in all different sizes, shapes and flavors. Our two favorites being cheese and banana. Dip in curry using either you hands or utensils. 11) While in Malacca it's a great idea to take a Melaka River Cruise at night as the city really lights up at night. You'll notice wonderful old colonial architecture and street art along with traditional homes alongside the Kampong. 12) The Clan Jetties are an important part of George Town's heritage and the last bastions of old Chinese settlements. 13) Georgetown is one of the most hot and humid cities I've ever visited. If you're looking to escape that for a while head over to the Botanical Gardens just outside of the city. In shady conditions you'll have the opportunity to walk around this massive park where you'll surely spot monkeys and other wildlife. 14) When visiting Malacca be sure to check out a Baba-Nyonya restaurant. A mixture of Chinese and Malaysian cuisine at its finest. Some of our favorite dishes included Nyonya Laksa, Rojak and Popiah. 15) Bling. Bling. That's not the sound of a horn but instead the decorations on a rickshaw in George Town. For around 30 to 40 Ringgit you can take a full one hour city tour. It certainly beats walking around in the heat. Highlights for us included going through Little India.
