Thomas Dolby (vocal, keyboards):
A moody atmospheric song about my uncle Stephen who drowned in a British sub in WW2.
The intro consists of multiple samples and loops played on my M-Audio Trigger Finger pads. I can sneak different loops in and out using the knobs, and trigger odd whale-like calls in Omnisphere, along with some bizarre unpredictable radio tuning sounds. At a given point I can send a click to Mat's ears so he knows where to start the drum fill into the groove.
During the song I'm playing lots of different sounds in several registers of the keyboard. None are very tricky, but it's easy to forget what I've assigned where—especially after a few months away from my rig! Sometimes I play this with no drums, a sort of ambient version which lets you hear all the sounds more clearly.
I've got two of the TriggerFinger boxes, and they're great but unfortunately they sometimes freak out and jumble up their memories. The product has been discontinued, so I guess I'm in the market for some new pads!
Mat Hector (drums):
One of my favorite tunes in the set. I think this is partially anthemic and expansive. Playing this track thorough a large PA is always a huge pleasure, it sounds so massive and engulfs the venue! The main goal for me on this tune is consistency. I'm essentially replicating a drum machine for this track so I'm aiming for an even dynamic throughout, machine like even. To help in creating this vibe I'm triggering an electronic bass drum and snare drum sounds via my acoustic bass drum and snare drum. Our sound engineer turns my acoustic drums down in the PA and turns the samples up so the audience really gets the electronic vibe. The sounds are actually the original drum sounds from submarines that Thomas gave me, so completely authentic. As you can see from the video I also trigger the initial fill via my spd-30 sample pad. Again these are actual samples from the original track.
Kevin Armstrong (guitar):
I love hitting the first ringing chord of this song (0:33) It's just a 3 note chord on the top strings D, F# and G on top. I put a capo on the 3rd fret to catch the G note and make it easy to play so it's like a Dsus4 but with the third still played. Again a signature Dolby voicing. Other people just don't do this often so the harmony sounds simple but has a unique flavour. Add some delay and a little compression and drive and just makes audiences whoop when they hear it slam out. The middle of the song has a great riff too that is fun to mash into.

Thomas Dolby (born Thomas Morgan Robertson; 14 October 1958) is an English musician and producer. Best known for his 1982 hit "She Blinded Me with Science", and 1984 single "Hyperactive!", he has also worked extensively in production and as a session musician.
Robertson was born in London, England, contrary to information in early 1980s press releases that reported his birthplace as Cairo, Egypt. His father, Martin Robertson, was an internationally distinguished professor of classical Greek art and archeology at the University of London and Oxford University, and in his youth Thomas lived or worked in France, Italy and Greece. He attended Abingdon School in 1975-76, completing his A Levels whilst there. Thomas Dolby spoke of his early musical experiences in a 2012 interview:
He later married actress Kathleen Beller in 1988; the couple have three children together.
Dolby is member #00001 of the current incarnation of the Flat Earth Society, a pseudoscientific group.
The Thomas Dolby stage name originated from a nickname that Thomas picked up around the age of 13. Thomas was always messing around with keyboards and tapes and the like, so his friends nicknamed him Dolby, which came from the name Dolby Laboratories. Later, when Thomas was 18 or 19 years old, British singer Tom Robinson was popular, so the then-Thomas Robertson chose to adopt the stage name "Thomas Dolby" when he began working professionally. Early publicity implied that "Dolby" was a middle name, and that the artist's full name was Thomas Morgan Dolby Robertson; this is not true, but he does sometimes informally go by the initials TMDR.

Thomas Dolby (vocal, keyboards): A moody atmospheric song about my uncle Stephen who drowned in a British sub in WW2. The intro consists of multiple samples and loops played on my M-Audio Trigger Finger pads. I can sneak different loops in and out using the knobs, and trigger odd whale-like calls in Omnisphere, along with some bizarre unpredictable radio tuning sounds. At a given point I can send a click to Mat's ears so he knows where to start the drum fill into the groove. During the song I'm playing lots of different sounds in several registers of the keyboard. None are very tricky, but it's easy to forget what I've assigned where—especially after a few months away from my rig! Sometimes I play this with no drums, a sort of ambient version which lets you hear all the sounds more clearly...

A moody atmospheric song about my uncle Stephen who drowned in a British sub in WW2.
The intro consists of multiple samples and loops played on my M-Audio Trigger Finger pads. I can sneak different loops in and out using the knobs, and trigger odd whale-like calls in Omnisphere, along with some bizarre unpredictable radio tuning sounds. At a given point I can send a click to Mat's ears so he knows where to start the drum fill into the groove.
During the song I'm playing lots of different sounds in several registers of the keyboard. None are very tricky, but it's easy to forget what I've assigned where—especially after a few months away from my rig! Sometimes I play this with no drums, a sort of ambient version which lets you hear all the sounds more clearly.
I've got two of the TriggerFinger boxes, and they're great but unfortunately they sometimes freak out and jumble up their memories. The product has been discontinued, so I guess I'm in the market for some new pads!
Mat Hector (drums):
One of my favorite tunes in the set. I think this is partially anthemic and expansive. Playing this track thorough a large PA is always a huge pleasure, it sounds so massive and engulfs the venue! The main goal for me on this tune is consistency. I'm essentially replicating a drum machine for this track so I'm aiming for an even dynamic throughout, machine like even. To help in creating this vibe I'm triggering an electronic bass drum and snare drum sounds via my acoustic bass drum and snare drum. Our sound engineer turns my acoustic drums down in the PA and turns the samples up so the audience really gets the electronic vibe. The sounds are actually the original drum sounds from submarines that Thomas gave me, so completely authentic. As you can see from the video I also trigger the initial fill via my spd-30 sample pad. Again these are actual samples from the original track.
Kevin Armstrong (guitar):
I love hitting the first ringing chord of this song (0:33) It's just a 3 note chord on the top strings D, F# and G on top. I put a capo on the 3rd fret to catch the G note and make it easy to play so it's like a Dsus4 but with the third still played. Again a signature Dolby voicing. Other people just don't do this often so the harmony sounds simple but has a unique flavour. Add some delay and a little compression and drive and just makes audiences whoop when they hear it slam out. The middle of the song has a great riff too that is fun to mash into.

This is one of a series of songs recorded live (and low-tech!) during Thomas Dolby's Spring 2012 Time Capsule Tour. Comments from Thomas Dolby (vocals, keyboards): This song always kicks off the uptempo end section of the set. The groove is underpinned by a bouncy sequence I made using various Logic synths. Mat has it pretty loud in his ears. I have a lot to do: I play a Solina-like string line, a sucky resonant synth with lots of filter, and the 'machine gun' claps in the choruses. In the breakdown section I jam with a series of blues harp samples I took off a sample CD. It's great when the crowd sings along. It feels like I'm back on the football terraces. You have to go to a Premier League soccer game to appreciate that feeling. American crowds don't sing like that! Comments from Kev...

Such a beautiful song and always a crowd favorite. The intro was always intense for me, keeping the melody soaring and open while playing in perfect rhythm with the click track. (Mat occasionally has to snap us back in time with the hi-hat on this recording. It was always a proud moment when we could pull the intro off without any corrections from Mat, but no big deal when we needed his intervention.) I love playing the banjo on this song, too. Taking the classic bluegrass rolling patterns for the right hand and using them in this song works out really nicely, and I love to sing along, too. This was one of the songs that would continue on in my head for hours or days after a show was over.

This track is all about the groove for me. Locking in with the fantastic bass riff and the sixteenth note shaker is the absolute main thing to make the whole thing groove and sit. While Thomas is talking about this song before we start I have a metronome in my ear already giving me the exact tempo. So while he's talking I'm already getting locking into the tempo. This also lets me give an inkling to the rest of the band of the tempo. The tricky part of the intro is conducting the band and keeping them in time with the sequencer that's running. When I'm playing a groove this is easy, but when I'm playing nothing it gets a little trickier! The great groove aside, my other favorite part of playing this song is the high belt vocal I get to sing in the chorus. Although sometimes I'm a little pitchy it's a line I try and sing out with passion.

play a very saturated distortion sound for the intro and break it really is creamy and lovely. On the intro I love the way the piano guitar and fiddle blend together like one instrument. It's great when the song settles in to a swampy downbeat groove at 0:58. When we sing the choruses we really have a challenge keeping together. In tune and sort of expressionless with long notes and no bending is the plot. If we get it wrong it just sounds like a few drunk blokes on a night out all slurring their way through a folk tune or something.
At the end of the first chorus at 3:20 I sing the Gooood after TD and my foot has to hover over that massive fuzz button which I have to mash on the downbeat for the tune. I can't see it I just have to guess where it is and hope for the best..

This is the first tune of TD's I ever played on so it has a special significance for me as I still remember the attention to detail we took in the studio and how much I learned about the recording process all those years ago.
The guitar solo at the end of this is in a very unfriendly key for an old rocker like me so the danger of bum notes is ever present. One day I'll learn to play comfortably in N#!

A mix of two distinct and fun drums patterns (half time verse groove verses the full chorus groove) Europa is a cool track to play as the set starts to build to its crescendo. For this track I used hot rods again to give a softer attach, (See link below) as I play the snare all the way through this track - no hi-hats. To suit my playing style I play the groove slightly differently from the original played by Justin Hildreth. Where as Justin plays the sixteenth notes hand to hand (left-right-left-right etc) I play this groove by just using my right hand to play the sixteenth notes, playing the back beat with my left hand. I found this suited my playing style better. In addition to the two grooves you can also see me using my 2box and salpe pad again. I use these to trigger the original snare sound from the track to play the intro fill, and the subsequent repeats of that fill.

Bands like New Order, Devo, Asia, A Flock of Seagulls, and The Thompson Twins gave music fans a run for their money as the youth of this generation craved the edginess of video driven exposure when FM radio was about to become corporate and a MTV was an infant that helped pioneer the visual opposed to recorded talent.
After 30 years after musician and producer Thomas Dolby released his colossal hit "She Blinded Me With Science" off his debut album "The Golden Age of Wireless," he proved and stated musically that he was intelligent and wasn't going to let the visual medium direct his career like so many artists of the early 1980's like Michael Jackson, Prince, The Cure, and Aerosmith that rose in the ranks to become the mega-superstars that they became. Thomas's music was a hybrid of rock, new wave, funk, soul, and electronica. His latest recording "A Map of the Floating City," his first in twenty years, is music based off a online game Dolby created with game designer Andrea Phillips. The game allows music fans and gamers to interact with nine different tribes and dig through cities that have been named after Dolby's past songs. The tribe that wins will get to see a private concert of Thomas performing his new record. Dolby's new record features guest performances by Mark Knopfler, Imogen Heap, Bruce Wooley, and Regina Spektor.
Born Thomas Morgan Robertson on October 14th, 1958, Dolby has been one of the most requested session keyboard players and producers during the late 1970's into the early 1980's. He's backed and recorded with Foreigner, Def Leppard, David Bowie, George Clinton, Whodini, and Prefab Sprout. Over the last 30 years he's released some of the most innovative records which include: "The Flat Earth," "The Aliens Ate My Buick," and "Astronauts and Heretics."
But the musician decided to take some time off from recording and move the Silicon Valley in the early 1990's where formed Beatnik, where his company created the polyphonic ringtone to the tune to well over 3 billion cellphone users all over the world. Dolby was also the music director for the TED Lecture series and has produced and scored endless music for television and film including "Howard the Duck," "Toys," "Gothic," and "We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story."
