In the United Kingdom, life peers are appointed members of the peerage whose titles cannot be inherited, in contrast to hereditary peers. Nowadays life peerages, always of the rank of baron, are created under the Life Peerages Act 1958 and entitle the holders to seats in the House of Lords, presuming they meet qualifications such as age and citizenship. The legitimate children of a life peer take the privilege of children of hereditary peers, being entitled to style themselves with the prefix "The Honourable," although they cannot inherit the peerage itself.

Tariq Ahmad has been appointed as a member of the House of Lords, the Prime Minister announced this afternoon.
Councillor Tariq Ahmad, a vice-chairman of the Conservative Party, is also the first member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association (AMA) to receive a peerage, having served as the association's national vice-president since 2003.
Coun Ahmad -- or Lord Ahmad as he will become known -- was appointed in 2008 as David Cameron's vice-chairman for Cities and was lauded for his wealth of experience as a businessman and his roles in the voluntary sector.
A spokesman for the AMA said: "Tariq is a great ambassador for the whole community and hopefully he will continue to serve all for the good of our entire community."
Debbie Shears, leader of Merton's Conservative opposition group, said: "I was extremely pleased to learn that Her Majesty The Queen has agreed to confer a life peerage on Tariq.
"He is a very well respected colleague and member of Merton Council and this honour is thoroughly deserved.
"I have no doubt he will work tirelessly in the House of Lords for the good of our country.
"On behalf of all Conservative councillors here in Merton, I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Tariq and his family."

Tariq's professional experience extends over 18 years. A business graduate, he joined Natwest's Graduate Management programme in 1991. During nine years for the Group he worked in a variety of frontline and strategic roles, culminating in a senior management role as Head of Marketing, Sponsorship and Branding for NatWest's capital markets division.

The Crown, as fount of honour, has the undoubted right to create peerages, whether hereditary or for life. In the early days of the peerage, the Sovereign had the right to summon individuals to one Parliament without being bound to summon them again. Over time, it was established that once summoned, a peer would have to be summoned for the remainder of his life, and later, that the peer's heirs and successors would also be summoned, thereby firmly entrenching the hereditary principle.

The early years of the twentieth century rank among the most peaceful in European history. In Britain's grand homes, Manor Houses it was a time of glamour, high society, and unfettered optimism. The British aristocracy enjoyed life on vast estates as they had done for centuries. Retinues of servants, beautiful houses, Manor Houses and fabulous costumes: the parties were extravagant, the scandal was infamous. It's no surprise that some of the most popular dramas to hit our screens have been set against this rich and colorful backdrop. In reality, however, the picture was less than golden; the historic order was starting to crumble. With World War One looming, and new technology, money, and ideas coming over from America, the British aristocracy were being threatened by deepening undercurrents of change as the nation stood at the brink of an upheaval so monumental that few could imagine it. Nowhere was this threat of change felt more acutely than within the confines of the British Manor House.
Exactly 100 years ago, the world of the British Manor House was at its height. It was a world of luxury that that has provided a majestic backdrop to a range of movies and popular costume dramas to this day. But what was really going on behind these stately walls and under the servants’ stairs? “Secrets of the Manor House” looks beyond the fiction to the truth of how life was in these ancient British houses, and how mounting financial, political and social pressures brought momentous changes to both the wealthy and their servants. The program covers the background of the British titled class in Edwardian times, the realities for servants working in their estates, Manor Houses the concept of the entail that passed estates to the next generation, the growing influence of American wealth in British aristocracy at the beginning of the 20th century, and the impact of the first world war on the social class system evident at a British country house.
