Nurses are some of the most important members in a community. Working closely with doctors, other health care professionals, patients and their families, nurses help ensure a strong, healthy, and functioning population. They can be employed in hospitals, nursing homes, extended care facilities, rehabilitation centres, doctors' offices, clinics, community agencies, and private companies.

There are many different types of nurses, from operating room nurses to community health nurses, and their day-to-day tasks vary greatly. Generally, however, some of a nurse's duties may include assessing patients, implementing patient care, administering medications and treatments as prescribed by a physician, monitoring symptoms and patient conditions, operating medical equipment, assisting in medical procedures like surgery, counselling patients and their families, offering health education, and working with other members of a health team.

Responsibilities & Skills

The responsibilities of a nurse vary depending on the employer and area of expertise. For example, an occupational health nurse provides care and implements employee health education programs in private businesses, whereas a community health nurse works in public health units and might deliver immunizations. Whether a registered nurse or an intensive care nurse, nurses require good communication skills, the ability to listen, and high energy to handle long hours of work.

Required Qualifications
