A video stroll through one of the most spectacular archeological sites in the world. Extremely well-preserved structures carved into rock stretching back to over two thousand years ago. Petra was the center of the Nabatean kingdom which existed around the time of Jesus Christ. I originally made this in stereoscopic 3D, which you can find on the YouTube channel Maxheadspace3D.
The "red-rose" city of Petra stands as one of the most glorious and mysterious archaeological sites on earth. Created over 2,500 years ago, the ornate Petra cityscape was literally carved into the rose-colored walls of Jordan's Shara Mountains. The builders of Petra, the Nabataeans, were thought to be some of the wealthiest people ever to inhabit the Middle East, but they, along with their riches, simply vanished. What was Petra and could the Arabian site be still hiding precious treasure?
Petra (Arabic: البتراء, Al-Batrāʾ, Ancient Greek Πέτρα) is a historical and archaeological city in the southern Jordanian governorate of Ma'an, that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved.
Established possibly as early as 312 BCE as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan, as well as its most-visited tourist attraction. It lies on the slope of Jebel al-Madhbah (identified by some as the biblical Mount Hor) in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a Newdigate Prize-winning poem by John William Burgon. Petra was chosen by the Smithsonian Magazine as one of the "28 Places to See Before You Die."
Evidence suggests that settlements had begun in and around Petra in the eighteenth dynasty of Egypt (1550--1292 BCE)[citation needed]. It is listed in Egyptian campaign accounts and the Amarna letters as Pel, Sela or Seir. Though the city was founded relatively late, a sanctuary existed there since very ancient times. Stations 19 through 26 of the stations list of Exodus are places associated with Petra. This part of the country was biblically assigned to the Horites, the predecessors of the Edomites. The habits of the original natives may have influenced the Nabataean custom of burying the dead and offering worship in half-excavated caves. When you arrive in Wadi Rum Village 6km past the visitor centre its a good idea to take a camel, jeep or walk to visit the Nabatean temple. It is one of the official historical sites of Wadi Rum Protected Area.

De nos jours le site de Pétra se trouve à près de 200 km au sud de la capitale jordanienne Amman, La situation de Pétra, dissimulée entre des rochers aux parois abruptes et dotée d'un approvisionnement sûr en eau en fait un lieu propice au développement d'une cité prospère. L'endroit n'est accessible que par un étroit sentier montagneux par le nord-ouest ou à l'est par un canyon d'environ 1,5 kilomètre de long et jusqu'à 200 mètres de profondeur, le Sîq, l'accès principal, qui, à son endroit le plus resserré, mesure seulement deux mètres de large.La présence d'eau et la sécurité apportée par le site ont fait de Pétra une halte naturelle au croisement de plusieurs routes caravanières qui reliaient l'Égypte à la Syrie et l'Arabie du Sud à la Méditerranée, chargées principalement de produits de luxe (épices et soie en provenance d'Inde, ivoire en provenance d'Afrique, perles de la Mer Rouge et encens du sud de l'Arabie). The place is accessible only by a narrow mountain trail from the north-west or east through a canyon of about 1.5 km long and up to 200 meters deep, the Siq, access Principal, which in the narrowest place, measures only two meters large.La presence of water and the security provided by the site of Petra have a natural stopping at the junction of several caravan routes that linked Egypt to Syria and southern Arabia to the Mediterranean, responsible mainly for luxury goods (spices and silk from India, ivory from Africa, Red Sea pearls and incense from southern Arabia). Nabataeans
The Nabataeans, also Nabateans (/ˌnæbəˈtiːənz/; Arabic: الأنباط al-ʾAnbāṭ , compare to Ancient Greek: Ναβαταίος, Latin: Nabatæus), were an Arabic people who inhabited northern Arabia and the Southern Levant, and whose settlements, most prominently the assumed capital city of Petra, in AD 37 – c. 100, gave the name of Nabatene to the borderland between Arabia and Syria, from the Euphrates to the Red Sea. Their loosely controlled trading network, which centered on strings of oases that they controlled, where agriculture was intensively practiced in limited areas, and on the routes that linked them, had no securely defined boundaries in the surrounding desert. Trajan conquered the Nabataean kingdom, annexing it to the Roman Empire, where their individual culture, easily identified by their characteristic finely potted painted ceramics, became dispersed in the general Greco-Roman culture and was eventually lost. They were later converted to Christianity. Jane Taylor, a writer, describes them as "one of the most gifted peoples of the ancient world".

The "red-rose" city of Petra stands as one of the most glorious and mysterious archaeological sites on earth. Created over 2,500 years ago, the ornate Petra cityscape was literally carved into the rose-colored walls of Jordan's Shara Mountains. The builders of Petra, the Nabataeans, were thought to be some of the wealthiest people ever to inhabit the Middle East, but they, along with their riches, simply vanished. What was Petra and could the Arabian site be still hiding precious treasure?
Petra (Arabic: البتراء, Al-Batrāʾ, Ancient Greek Πέτρα) is a historical and archaeological city in the southern Jordanian governorate of Ma'an, that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved.
Established possibly as early as 312 BCE as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan, as well as its most-visited tourist attraction. It lies on the slope of Jebel al-Madhbah (identified by some as the biblical Mount Hor) in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a Newdigate Prize-winning poem by John William Burgon. ,Pétra est située à mi-chemin entre le golfe d'Aqaba et la mer Morte à une altitude de 800 à 1 396 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer, dans un fond de vallée de la région montagneuse d'Édom, à l'est de la vallée de l'Arabah. De nos jours le site de Pétra se trouve à près de 200 km au sud de la capitale jordanienne Amman, La situation de Pétra, dissimulée entre des rochers aux parois abruptes et dotée d'un approvisionnement sûr en eau en fait un lieu propice au développement d'une cité prospère. L'endroit n'est accessible que par un étroit sentier montagneux par le nord-ouest ou à l'est par un canyon d'environ 1,5 kilomètre de long et jusqu'à 200 mètres de profondeur, le Sîq, l'accès principal, qui, à son endroit le plus resserré, mesure seulement deux mètres de large.La présence d'eau et la sécurité apportée par le site ont fait de Pétra une halte naturelle au croisement de plusieurs routes caravanières qui reliaient l'Égypte à la Syrie et l'Arabie du Sud à la Méditerranée, chargées principalement de produits de luxe (épices et soie en provenance d'Inde, ivoire en provenance d'Afrique, perles de la Mer Rouge et encens du sud de l'Arabie). The place is accessible only by a narrow mountain trail from the north-west or east through a canyon of about 1.5 km long and up to 200 meters deep, the Siq, access Principal, which in the narrowest place, measures only two meters large.La presence of water and the security provided by the site of Petra have a natural stopping at the junction of several caravan routes that linked Egypt to Syria and southern Arabia to the Mediterranean, responsible mainly for luxury goods (spices and silk from India, ivory from Africa, Red Sea pearls and incense from southern Arabia). The resin of the "incense tree (Boswellia) was coveted in the entire ancient world as a medicine.
