Bath (pronounced /ˈbɑːθ/) is a city in the ceremonial county of Somerset in the south west of England. It is situated 97 miles (156 km) west of London and 13 miles (21 km) south-east of Bristol. The population of the city is 83,992.[1] It was granted city status by Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I in 1590, and was made a county borough in 1889 which gave it administrative independence from its county, Somerset. The city became part of Avon when that county was created in 1974. Since 1996, when Avon was abolished, Bath has been the principal centre of the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES;).
The city was founded, among surrounding hills, in the valley of the River Avon around naturally occurring hot springs (the only ones in the United Kingdom, using the common definition of a spring with water above average human body temperature) where the Romans built baths and a temple, giving it the name Aquae Sulis. Edgar was crowned king of England at Bath Abbey in 973. Much later, it became popular as a spa resort during the Georgian era, which led to a major expansion that left a heritage of exemplary Georgian architecture crafted from Bath Stone.
As City of Bath the city became a World Heritage Site in 1987. The city has a variety of theatres, museums, and other cultural and sporting venues, which have helped to make it a major centre for tourism, with over one million staying visitors and 3.8 million day visitors to the city each year.[5] The city has two universities and several schools and colleges. There is a large service sector and growing information and communication technologies and creative industries, providing employment for the population of Bath and the surrounding area.

This week I’m in Wells, in Somerset, not to be mistaken with Wells in Somerset.
Toby's channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/tobydolier?sub_confirmation=1
You may think that this picturesque location is a town but it’s not a town, it's a city and that’s because it has a cathedral. In fact it’s the smallest city in the UK.
Wells Cathedral is actually relatively new, it was built in 2009. The architect, Mrs Maureen Tucker gave the finished building it’s “aged” look by dabbing the brick work with tea bags.
Many have accused Well’s residents of being xenophobic and intolerant of other cultures which is why it may surprise you that Wells was the first place in the UK to regular produce curry. The first one they brought out in England was the vegetable bhuna, other dishes followed in subsequent years.
No visit to Wells would be complete without a visit to Bakwell Manor, the former home of the late Mr Kipling. Guest to the manor house often report seeing the ghost of the famous baker who, in life, was exceedingly good at making cakes.

I check out the Visitor center and the friendly tourism ambassador shows me how she can make good recommendations for the tourist, using the new interactive computer system, and even print out a coloured map and itinerary for the tourist. This is really cool!
Opening Hours: 9:30AM to 10:30PM
The following write up is taken from the Singapore Tourism Board Press release dated 16 Feb 2015.
Singapore Visitor Centre Relocates to orchardgateway@emerald
A one-stop touch-point catering and customising to visitor needs
Singapore, 16 February 2015 – The Singapore Visitor Centre (SVC) will have a new home at 216 Orchard Road; situated next to orchardgateway@emerald, from 17 February. Set in a two-storey conserved Peranakan shophouse in the heritage-rich Emerald Hill area, the centre is designed with the visitor experience in mind, from the spatial layout to the range of services available.
The SVC will provide more services, including the sale of arts and entertainment tickets, on top of existing tours, accommodation and attractions booking options. It will also house a retail space that offers locally-designed souvenirs - curated based on what one can "Eat", "See", "Hear" and "Learn" in Singapore. Visitors can bring home a variety of souvenirs that take inspiration from traditional local food such as kueh tutu to Singapore's distinctive HDB flats.
A key feature of the new Centre is the use of technology to help visitors explore more of Singapore. Besides two large screens that display a variety of places of interest and events in Singapore, there are four interactive information kiosks that allow visitors to first browse and select places to explore, before putting them together in a digital itinerary. This personalised itinerary can then be printed immediately and/or emailed to the visitors' smartphones. Complimentary WiFi will also be available for visitors to stay connected within the SVC, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
STB Director, Visitor Experience & Capability Development, Ms Choo Huei Miin said, "The new Singapore Visitor Centre aims to be a one-stop service and information touch-point that adds to visitors' overall experience in Singapore. We hope that, through the effective use of technology coupled with personalised and warm assistance provided by our Customer Service Officers, visitors will have a better understanding of what Singapore can offer and be inspired to explore and uncover our many hidden gems."
While the first level of the centre is devoted to key visitor services, the second level is an event space that will be open in the second quarter of the year. There will be temporary exhibitions and interactive installations that will present different facets of Singapore, adding layers to deliver a compelling Singapore story.
The new SVC will replace the current one located at the junction of Cairnhill Road and Orchard Road, which will cease operations on 17 February. Visitors can also approach SVC@ION Orchard and Chinatown Visitor Centre @ Kreta Ayer Square. For more information on locations and operating hours, please visit the YourSingapore website at:

I am singing a ballad from 1913 written by an English Lawyer and Lyricist, and Songwriter, Frederic Weatherly, from Bath, Somerset. While he wrote the words, his Irish-born sister-in-law Margaret (known as Jess) sent him a copy of "Londonderry Air," and Weatherly modified his lyrics of "Danny Boy" to fit the rhyme and meter of "Londonderry Air." Thus, was born the song "Danny Boy" which is closely associated with the Irish community. Elsie Griffin was given this song by Weatherly and she made it one of the most popular songs in the new century, and, in 1915, Ernestine Schumann-Heink produced the first recording of "Danny Boy." On the last working day of the near-legendary Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway we stand near the southern entrance to the westernmost one of two Windsor Hill Tunnels near Shepton Mallet as a pair of immaculate original Bulleid Pacifics, nos. 34006 'Bude' and 34057 'Biggin Hill' climb northwards to Bath Green Park for the last time. We then move to Midford Viaduct to witness 'Mickey Mouse' tank no. 41208 wend its lonely way to meet its fate.

Danny Boy " In H.D." (A Cover By Mrs Flashback) Plls Use Phones!!
Elsie Griffin was given this song by Weatherly and she made it one of the most popular songs in the new century, and, in 1915, Ernestine Schumann-Heink produced the first recording of "Danny Boy." Many, many artists have recorded or sung this song. Please "Flashback" with me and remember this beautiful Irish folk song. This is my own version of this song, so I hope you will enjoy this rendition Hope your week is off to a swimmingly grand time which ends up with a bang Irish style -- thanks so much for listening as I appreciate it -- Martha/MrsFlashback

Therefore for personal hygiene, people went to the local baths. However, the local bath complex was also a gathering point and served a very useful community and social function. Here people could relax, keep clean and keep up with the latest news.

Another fantastic scenario from TobBirk, this one is called Spare Parts for Bath and you can get it from Steam Workshop. Train Simulator 2015 - Somerset and Dorset, Class 3F
I really enjoyed this scenario, it features the Meshtools Class 3F running on the original Somerset and Dorset line. Running in advanced mode, you have to manage a challenging passenger run from Bath Green Park to Radstock, then swap your coaches for loaded wagons and bring the heavy load back to Bath. Difficult grades, red lights, manual firing, all good fun :) This was another one downloaded from Steam Workshop and is called "Blowing off the Dust", by "Mike - Captain Ugh" :) -- Watch live at http://www.twitch.tv/mattpeddlesden

Roman baths were part of the day-to-day life in Ancient Rome. Bath in Somerset, contains one of the best examples of a Roman bath complex in Europe. There are two good examples at Pompeii.
Roman houses had water supplied via lead pipes. However, these pipes were taxed according to their size, so many houses had just a basic supply and could not hope to rival a bath complex. Therefore for personal hygiene, people went to the local baths. However, the local bath complex was also a gathering point and served a very useful community and social function. Here people could relax, keep clean and keep up with the latest news.
Taking a bath was not a simple chore. There was not one bath to use in a large complex such as the one at Bath. A visitor could use a cold bath (the frigidarium), a warm bath (the tepidarium) and a hot bath (the caldarium). A visitor would spend some of his time in each one before leaving. A large complex would also contain an exercise area (the palaestra), a swimming pool and a gymnasium. One of the public baths at Pompeii contains two tepidariums and caldariums along with a plunge pool and a large exercise area.
The building of a bath complex required excellent engineering skills. Baths required a way of heating up water. This was done by using a furnace and the hypocaust system carried the heat around the complex.
Water had to be constantly supplied. In Rome this was done using 640 kilometers of aqueducts - a superb engineering feat. The baths themselves could be huge. A complex built by the emperor Diocletian was the size of a football pitch. Those who built them wanted to make a statement - so that many baths contained mosaics and massive marble columns. The larger baths contained statues to the gods and professionals were on hand to help take the strain out of having a bath. Masseurs would massage visitors and then rub scented olive oil into their skin.
It was very cheap to use a Roman bath. A visitor, after paying his entrance fee, would strip naked and hand his clothes to an attendant. He could then do some exercising to work up a sweat before moving into the tepidarium which would prepare him for the caldarium which was more or less like a modern sauna. The idea, as with a sauna, was for the sweat to get rid of the body's dirt. After this a slave would rub olive oil into the visitor's skin and then scrap it off with a strigil. The more luxurious establishments would have professional masseurs to do this. After this, the visitor would return to the tepidarium and then to frigidarium to cool down. Finally, he could use the main pool for a swim or to generally socialise. Bathing was very important to the Ancient Romans as it served many functions.

Bath is a city in Somerset, South West England, 97 miles (156 km) west of London and 13 miles (21 km) south-east of Bristol. In 2011, its population was 88,859.[2] It became part of Avon in 1974; since Avon's abolition in 1996, it has been the principal centre of Bath and North East Somerset.
The city became a spa with the Latin name Aquae Sulis ("the waters of Sulis") c. AD 60 when the Romans built baths and a temple in the valley of the River Avon, although oral tradition suggests that the hot springs were known before then. It became popular as a spa town during the Georgian era, leaving a heritage of Georgian architecture crafted from Bath Stone.

Singapore Visitor Center, opposite Somerset MRT station, Singapore. This place provides free Wi-Fi for tourists!!
This is a brand new Singapore Visitor Center, opened 17 Feb 2015. Housed in a Peranakan building, right opposite Somerset MRT station.

On the last working day of the near-legendary Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway we stand near the southern entrance to the westernmost one of two Windsor Hill Tunnels near Shepton Mallet as a pair of immaculate original Bulleid Pacifics, nos. 34006 'Bude' and 34057 'Biggin Hill' climb northwards to Bath Green Park for the last time. We then move to Midford Viaduct to witness 'Mickey Mouse' tank no. 41208 wend its lonely way to meet its fate.

Time Team S14-E02 There's No Place Like Rome, Blacklands, Somerset
Jayne Lawes and the Bath and Camerton Archaeological Society have been carrying out excavations at a site called 'Blacklands' in Somerset since 1999.
The site is close to the major religious centre at Aquae Sulis (Bath) and has produced rare and tantalising results that indicate a very early Roman presence in an area not traditionally associated with villas until much later. A 'proto-villa', potentially from as early as 70 AD, and a gatehouse had already been excavated, producing early pottery and military finds.
Time Team was called in to investigate more of the site and discover what was going on here in the early years of Roman occupation and to try to find out how the local Iron-Age population might have welcomed their new neighbours.Jayne Lawes and the Bath and Camerton Archaeological Society have been carrying out excavations at a site called 'Blacklands' in Somerset since 1999.
