The Dardanelles (
/dɑrdəˈnɛlz/; Turkish: Çanakkale Boğazı, Greek: Δαρδανέλλια, Dardanellia), formerly known as Hellespont ( /ˈhɛlɨspɒnt/; Ancient Greek: Ἑλλήσποντος, Hellespontos, literally "Sea of Helle"), is a narrow strait in northwestern Turkey connecting the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara. It is one of the Turkish Straits, along with its counterpart the Bosphorus. It is located at approximately 40°13′N 26°26′E / 40.217°N 26.433°E / 40.217; 26.433. The strait is 61 kilometres (38 mi) long but only 1.2 to 6 kilometres (0.75 to 3.7 mi) wide, averaging 55 metres (180 ft) deep with a maximum depth of 103 metres (338 ft). Water flows in both directions along the strait, from the Sea of Marmara to the Aegean via a surface current and in the opposite direction via an undercurrent.
Like the Bosphorus, it separates Europe (the Gallipoli peninsula) from the mainland of Asia. The strait is an international waterway, and together with the Bosphorus, the Dardanelles connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.

To break up the stalemate and get a decisive advantage, France and Great Britain open up yet another theatre of war in the Dardanelles. The plan is to seize the strait and open eventually open up the Bosporus in order to ship supplies to the Eastern and Balkan front. And so begins the naval bombardment of ottoman forts as prelude to a big offensive which will we know to today as Gallipoli.

Canakkale is home to several historic monuments, beautiful streets and a plethora of amazing restaurants. It is also just a short ferry ride away from the ruins of ancient Troy! The best part is that Canakkale is only a 6.5 hour drive from Istanbul, making it a great stop-over destination for those traveling around the Marmara Region.
Canakkale's charm lies in its location. Strolling along the waterfront promenade reveals beautiful views and a much-appreciated sea breeze. David makes a quick stop at the Kale Fortress, which is open to the public and features rows upon rows of antique canons and other military memorabilia. Near the Castle is an enormous reproduction of the Trojan Horse. It was used as a prop in the 2004 movie “Troy" featuring Brad Pitt. After filming, it was donated to the city of Canakkale and has been on public display ever since.
Now for the food...After an eventful first day exploring Canakkale, David goes to a popular seafood restaurant in town, Yalova Situated in the old fish market, Restaurant Yalova serves up fresh local seafood with a beautiful view of the Dardenelles Strait. Make sure you reserve a table on the rooftop to enjoy the water views with your meal.
The next day, David stops by Kavala for a casual seafood meal in this taverna-style restaurant. Kavala is located right along the main pedestrian boulevard near the ferry station. Like many local eateries, Kavala serves fresh local seafood along with traditional Turkish dishes. Another popular restaurant in town is Hangover Cafe Bar, which is always packed! Hangover serves up casual food and has a great ambiance, especially for 20 and 30-somethings. It features both indoor and outdoor dining. http://davidsbeenhere.com In this episode, David takes us around Turkey’s Marmara region to show us what to see and eat in Canakkale, Turkey - a beautiful city along the Dardanelles Strait. Canakkale is home to several historic monuments, beautiful streets and a plethora of amazing restaurants. It is also just a short ferry ride away from the ruins of ancient Troy! The best part is that Canakkale is only a 6.5 hour drive from Istanbul, making it a great stop-over destination for those traveling around the Marmara Region.
Canakkale's charm lies in its location. Strolling along the waterfront promenade reveals beautiful views and a much-appreciated sea breeze. David makes a quick stop at the Kale Fortress, which is open to the public and features rows upon rows of antique canons and other military memorabilia. Near the Castle is an enormous reproduction of the Trojan Horse. It was used as a prop in the 2004 movie “Troy" featuring Brad Pitt. After filming, it was donated to the city of Canakkale and has been on public display ever since.
Now for the food...After an eventful first day exploring Canakkale, David goes to a popular seafood restaurant in town, Yalova Situated in the old fish market, Restaurant Yalova serves up fresh local seafood with a beautiful view of the Dardenelles Strait. Make sure you reserve a table on the rooftop to enjoy the water views with your meal.
The next day, David stops by Kavala for a casual seafood meal in this taverna-style restaurant. Kavala is located right along the main pedestrian boulevard near the ferry station. Like many local eateries, Kavala serves fresh local seafood along with traditional Turkish dishes. Another popular restaurant in town is Hangover Cafe Bar, which is always packed! Hangover serves up casual food and has a great ambiance, especially for 20 and 30-somethings. It features both indoor and outdoor dining. Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye) is on the Mediterranean, with 97% of its territory in West Asia and the Middle East, and with a small section in Southeastern Europe separated by the Turkish Straits (Bosphorus, Sea of Marmara, and Dardanelles). With the Black Sea to the north and the Aegean Sea in the west and Mediterranean Sea to the southwest, Turkey is surrounded by Bulgaria and Greece to the west, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia to the northeast, Syria, Iraq and Iran to the southeast.
Ancient ruins and architectural heritage
At the crossroads of civilizations, all parts of Turkey are full of a mindblowing number of ancient ruins.
Hittites, the first indigenous people that rose to found a state in Anatolia—although there is one certain Çatalhöyük preceding them, the earliest settlement ever found to the date in Turkey—left the proof of their existence at the ruins of Hattuşaş, their capital.
Ancient Greeks and closely following Romans left their mark mostly in Aegean and Mediterranean Regions, leaving behind the marble ruins of hundreds of cities, temples, and monuments. Some are largely restored to their former glory, such as Ephesus as well as numerous others along the Aegean coast which are on the checklist of most travellers to Turkey, along with some more obscure ones off the beaten path such as Aphrodisias near Denizli, and Aizonai.
In the meantime, some other indigenous peoples, such as Lycians, were carving beautiful tombs—many of which are fairly well preserved and can be seen all around Lycia—for their dearly departed ones onto the rocky hillsides.
Legendary Troy stands out as an example of different civilizations literally living on the top of each other. While what is visible today is clearly Hellenistic, the place has its roots as Hittite Wilusa, and later re-built many times over by Ancient Greeks.
Perhaps the most unique "architectural" heritage in the country, some of the Cappadocian cave houses and churches carved into "fairy chimneys" and underground cities (in a literal sense!) date back to early Christians hiding from persecution.
Successors of Romans, the Byzantines, broke new ground with more ambitious projects, culminating in grand Hagia Sophia of Istanbul, built in 537, and which had the distinction of being the largest cathedral in the world for almost a thousand years. Most of Byzantine heritage intact today is found in Marmara Region, especially in Istanbul, although a stray monastery or two dating back to the era can be found in almost any part of the country.
Seljuks, the first ever Turkic state to be founded in Asia Minor, built most of their monuments—which incorporates large majestic portals and heavily delicate stonework, reminiscent of some landmarks in parts of Asia—in major centres of the time in Eastern and Central Anatolia, especially in Konya, their capital.
Ottomans, who had considered themselves as a Balkan state until their demise, built most of their landmarks in Balkans and the natural extension of Balkans within today's Turkey—Marmara Region—just like the Byzantines, whom the Ottomans inspired to in so many ways. Most of the earlier Ottoman monuments were built in Bursa, which have little Byzantine and comperatively large Seljuk influences, and later, when the dynasty moved to Europe, in Edirne, some of the major landmarks of which exhibit some kind of "transitional" and fairly experimental style. It wasn't until the Fall of Constantinople that the Ottomans adopted Byzantine architecture almost full scale with some adjustments. However, the Ottoman imperial architecture possibly reached its zenith not in Istanbul, but in Edirne—in the form of Selimiye Mosque, a work of Sinan, the great Ottoman architecture of 16th century.
19th century brought back the Greek and Roman taste of architectural styles, so there was a huge explosion of neo-classical architecture, as much fashionable in Turkey as in the much of the rest of the world at that time. Galata side of Istanbul, Izmir (though unfortunately most of which was lost to the big fire of 1922), and numerous towns along the coasts, one most prominent and well preserved example being Ayvalık, quickly filled with elegant neo-classical buildings. At the same time, people in more inland locations were favouring pleasant, more traditional, and less pretentious half-timbered whitewashed houses, which form picturesque towns such as Safranbolu, Beypazarı, and Şirince in northern, central, and western part of the country respectively. It was also this time beautiful and impressive wooden mansions of Istanbul's seaside neighbourhoods and islands were built.

In other words, whoever or whatever wanted to pass through the Marmara Sea into Constantinople (present-day Istanbul) would first have to cross the Dardanelles Strait. Thus, Gallipoli has always been at the center of military action throughout the centuries.
On April 25th, 1915, the British tried to capture Constantinople by launching an attack on Gallipoli. This is known as the Gallipoli Campaign. Today, visiting Gallipoli reveals just how important the peninsula was for Allied forces to possess in WWI. Touring the Gallipoli Peninsula shows just how many casualties there were from around the world.
David starts his tour on the west side of the peninsula, at the 15th century Kilitbahir Castle, to see exactly how the Ottomans defended the Dardanelles Strait. The location of Kilitbahir Castle is a strategic one - it is positioned at the narrowest part of the strait.
Next up, David shows us the impressive Martyr’s Memorial to honor the 250,000+ Ottoman troops that perished in WWI. The memorial features a massive rectangular monument, sculptures and a expansive cemetery of symbolic tombstones for the Ottoman soldiers who died in the war. Each tombstone has the named of 36 soldiers.
Ottoman soldiers are not the only ones who died during the Gallipoli Campaign. David’s guide Emre takes David to see the Hellas Memorial dedicated to the British soldiers. Their names are inscribed on the sides of the monument’s square platform. Emre and David then go to the Anzac Cove Ceremonial Area, a beach where a memorial ceremony is held each year on April 25th to commemorate the Gallipoli Campaign. Anzac Coce was where Australian and New Zealand troops invaded Gallipoli.
Lone Pine Cemetery and Memorial is another war memorial dedicated to the Australian soldiers who died in the Battle of Lone Pine in August 1925.
