Public Lecture—Archimedes: Accelerator Reveals Ancient Text
Lecture Date: Tuesday, December 13, 2005. Archimedes (287-212 BC), who is famous for shouting 'Eureka' (I found it) is considered one of the most brilliant thinkers of all times. The 10th-century parchment document known as the "Archimedes Palimpsest" is the unique source for two of the great Greek's treatises. Some of the writings, hidden under gold forgeries, have recently been revealed at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory at SLAC. An intense x-ray beam produced in a particle accelerator causes the iron in original ink, which has been partly erased and covered, to send out a fluorescence glow. A detector records the signal and a digital image showing the ancient writings is produced. Please join us in this fascinating journey of a 1,000-year-old parchment from its origin in t...

Understanding Archimedes' principle
The great Greek scientist Archimedes’ “eureka” moment is quite popular. Why did Archimedes get so excited about his thought experiment? What was the concept he deduced while he was taking a bath? More importantly, did Archimedes solve his king’s crown problem using an immersing experiment or a float balance?

Newton or Leibniz? This never-ending debate on who discovered calculus would be settled if ancient Greeks were not so afraid of the concept of infinitesimals. Archimedes' work calculates the area (called quadrature back then) enclosed by a parabola and a line (i.e. parabolic segment), which is typically solved by calculus today. He had also developed the modern idea of limits, just not in modern notations, so ancient Greeks are really only a few steps away from discovering calculus!
