Mohammed Yasser Abdel Rahman Abdel Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa al-Husseini (Arabic: محمد ياسر عبد الرحمن عبد الرؤوف عرفات القدوة الحسيني; 24 August 1929 – 11 November 2004), popularly known as Yasser Arafat (Arabic: ياسر عرفات) or by his kunyaAbu Ammar (Arabic: أبو عمار, 'Abū `Ammār), was a Palestinian leader and a Laureate of the Nobel Prize. He was Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), President of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), and leader of the Fatah political party, which he founded in 1959. Arafat spent much of his life fighting against Israel in the name of Palestinian self-determination. Originally opposed to Israel's existence, he modified his position in 1988 when he accepted UN Security Council Resolution 242. Arafat and his movement operated from several Arab countries. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Fatah faced off with Jordan in a brief civil war. Forced out of Jordan and into Lebanon, Arafat and Fatah were major targets of Israel's 1978 and 1982 invasions of that country.
Nine years on from his death, the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat remains one of the most controversial, and undoubtedly the most famous figure in Palestinian history. For many people remains a symbol of the Palestinian struggle for independence. Now a forensic report by Swiss scientists has confirmed what many have suspected or believed for the past nine years: that there is evidence to support the theory that Arafat was poisoned with the radioactive chemical polonium. We explain who Yasser Arafat was and why someone might have wanted to poison him.

"The victory march will continue until the Palestinian flag flies in Jerusalem and in all of Palestine."
"In order to obtain the goal of returning to Palestine, all of us sometimes have to grit our teeth."

"I come bearing an olive branch in one hand, and the freedom fighter's gun in the other. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand."

Yasser Arafat Speech Young at the UN (United Nations)in 1974

Being the wife of one of the world's most controversial leaders may not be easy, but Soha Arafat appears to have adjusted well to her new home in Gaza City.
APTV has an exclusive interview with the thirty-two year old wife of Yasser Arafat.
When Soha Arafat first came to Gaza City in July 1994, locals were skeptical that the Sorbonne-educated woman would settle into a routine that lacks the sophistication of her former Paris life.
Eighteen months on, Mrs. Arafat still wears her French couture outfits but she says she loves being a mother and has grown accustomed to life in Gaza City.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat ingested lethal radioactive polonium before his death nine years ago and had high levels of it in his body that could not have been accidental, Swiss scientists confirmed on Thursday.
The Swiss lab examined Arafat's remains, his underclothes and a travel bag that he had with him in the days before his 2004 death in a Paris hospital.
They found that the amounts of polonium and its byproduct lead in those items could not be naturally occurring.
The time frame of his illness and death were also consistent with polonium poisoning, they said.
"Polonium cannot be found everywhere, it is a very rare, toxic sub

Arafat also shrugged off reports that he was ill with Parkinson's Disease.
The PLO leader was speaking in an exclusive interview with APTV in London, after holding talks with U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
The Palestinian leader lashed out at Benjamin Netanyahu, saying the prime minister was trying to avoid honest implementation of a peace agreement.

It is the record of the conversation between Yasser Arafat and Christiane Amanpour which aired on CNN broadcast of March 29, 2002. The conversation happened during the siege of Arafat's compound in Ramallah by Israeli forces. Arafat reprehended Amanpour with these word before he left the live broadcast: 04:57 "Are you asking me why am I under complete siege? You're a wonderful journalist. You have to respect your profession.... 05:20 You have to be accurately when you are speaking with General Yasser Arafat. Be quiet!.. 05:45 Be fair!"
Amanpour's reaction at 05:35
Text of Conversation from CNN*
CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR, CNN SENIOR INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: I'm Christiane Amanpour in Jerusalem. We have now on the phone with us, from his besieged compound in Ramallah, the chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Yasser Arafat.
Mr. Arafat, thank you for joining us. Can you tell me exactly what conditions are like at your compound right now?
YASSER ARAFAT, PRESIDENT OF THE PALESTINIAN NATIONAL AUTHORITY: Still you are not following. It's aggression. Again it's the Palestinian people in all West Bank and Gaza, where they are divided into three step, divided, completely separated. And also the aggression and the attack in Ramallah, against my headquarters and against the Palestinian people in Berah (ph) and Ramallah and all around it. And the same time they are increasing their forces, their military activities to follow up their aggression against many other places, many other towns, many other cities, many other areas in our Palestinian liberated areas.
AMANPOUR: Mr. Arafat, can you tell me please, has your -- the rooms that you're sitting in, have they been attacked? Have any of your rooms been attacked? Are you under direct physical threat right now?
ARAFAT: It seems that you are not following the TVs all over the world. They have destroyed completely seven of our buildings, completely, around my office, and firing my office with all their armament.
What do you expect? An Arafat that -- you have to undertand and they have to understand it is the Palestinian people who are facing this challenge. And we are sure that our people will continue to stick fast (ph) in the face of this terrorism. This is the real terrorists of the occupation.
And especially they are using all the American weapons against us, of F-15s and F-16s and Merkava and rockets and bombs and artilleries and everything.
AMANPOUR: Do you believe, Mr. Arafat, that they are trying to kill you, trying to harm you?
ARAFAT: What do they expect by shelling us continuously in the last 24 hours? What do you think...
AMANPOUR: Mr. Arafat, what about these...
ARAFAT: ... it is by chance? They're saying that the Americans said that Arafat would not be harmed. It is a problem of Arafat or is the problem of our people, of our liberty, of our independent Palestinian state, of our peaceful agreement between me and my partner, Rabin, who has paid his life for the peace of the brave which we have signed.
In the sight of God, we are (UNINTELLIGIBLE) continual peace of the brave, which I have signed with my partner, Rabin. But we have to remember...
AMANPOUR: Mr. Arafat...
ARAFAT: ... (UNINTELLIGIBLE) my partner, Rabin, is now in the power in Israel. We are following this with the peace process, with the majority of the Israeli people.
AMANPOUR: Secretary of State Colin Powell has spoken to you, I understand. He has also spoken publicly and called on you to rein in the violence. What do you, would you make of that statement, and can you and will you rein in that violence?
ARAFAT: Are you asking me why am I under complete siege? You're a wonderful journalist. You have to respect your profession.
AMANPOUR: Mr. Arafat, I'm asking you simply a question.
ARAFAT: No, you have to be...
AMANPOUR: Are you able to rein in the violence?
ARAFAT: You have to be accurately when you are speaking with General Yasser Arafat. Be quiet!
AMANPOUR: Mr. Arafat, what did you make of Colin Powell's statement?
ARAFAT: You are covering with such questions these terrorist activities of the Israeli occupation and the Israeli crimes. Be fair! (ph) not to make these fatal mistakes.
AMANPOUR: Can I ask...
ARAFAT: Thank you. Bye-bye.
AMANPOUR: Well, you just heard a very angry and emotional Yasser Arafat. We have asked him his conditions in there. He spoke about the complete siege of his compound and the breaching of his compound. We also asked him whether he believes he's a target. He asked us, rhetorically, "What did we think about that?"
We asked him to react to Colin Powell's statement asking him to rein in the violence. And he basically said that we were not asking a fair question. Clearly, there is a great deal of pressure right now on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, pressure that the Israelis obviously intend.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
"In the beginning it was too much. It was too much and everybody is focusing on you and even the press speaking right and wrong things about you."
SUPERCAPTION: Soha Arafat
In addition to the constant media focus Mrs. Arafat faced the challenge of being a Westernised woman living in a male dominated community.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The first criticism, the first difficulties, it's not easy, jealousy, conspiracies you just hear them and you just see the person and just laugh. You have to be yourself. You know what's been done behind but you are just yourself."
SUPERCAPTION: Soha Arafat
Mrs. Arafat, a Palestinian Christian, grew up in Paris. She met her husband while working as his secretary at P-L-O headquarters in Tunis in the late 1980s.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I miss the intellectual part of Paris, the intellectual part of the life in Paris I mean the theaters the reading, the little cafe, the window shopping you know, you miss things like this but you miss mostly liberty."
SUPER CAPTION: Soha Arafat
Setting up a house in Gaza wasn't easy for Mrs. Arafat, mainly because - for years - her husband has to sleep in a different place every night, to avoid possible assassination attempts.
But now the Palestinian leader's schedule is more 'normal': he leaves the house at ten in the morning often to return 16 hours later at two a.m.
Mrs. Arafat spends her days caring for their child, Zahwa, and sometimes receives visiting delegations or Palestinians with problems they want solved.
She says she wishes she could do more to help her husband with his work.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Sometimes a woman wants to help her husband but it's too much difficult to help Yasser Arafat because his problem is not personal but the problem of all the Palestinian people. So you feel frustrated, you can't help him you just sometimes keep silent because you don't want to hurt his feelings."
SUPER CAPTION: Soha Arafat
Like any mother, Soha would have liked to bring up her daughter in a normal environment, away from the constant armed bodyguards.
Relaxing at the couple's villa in Gaza, Soha reveals a little secret about the Palestinian leader - he never sings nursery rhymes to his 8-month-old daughter.
He whistles to her.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"He does not show his emotions because some leaders - they don't know to show that they have a weak point. Sometimes I say 'No, to love a daughter or a wife is a strong point, not a weak point' - but it's in the mentality, and I cope with it."
SUPER CAPTION: Soha Arafat
Cradling baby Zahwa in her arms, Soha appears the perfect picture of happiness.

"Polonium cannot be found everywhere, it is a very rare, toxic substance. If you have to face polonium ingestion, of course, a third party has been behind this," Patrice Mangin, director of the Lausanne University Hospital's forensics centre, said in a video interview with the Associated Press.
At the news conference earlier, Mangin said he could not say unequivocally what killed Arafat since the biological samples obtained just last year were too degraded to determine the cause of death.
"The activities that we measured in Mr Arafat case are significantly higher than what we are used to. And when I say significantly higher and said in the order of 20 times what we are used to generally observe," said Francois Bochud, director of the Institute of Radiation Physics that carried out the probe.
The Palestinian leader died in November 2004 at a French military hospital, a month after falling violently ill at his Israeli-besieged West Bank compound.
Palestinian officials have alleged from the start that Israel poisoned Arafat, a claim Israel denies.
Bochud said just a minuscule amount of polonium slipped into food or drink would be lethal within about a month.
Arafat's body was exhumed earlier this year.
When they did open the tomb, they saw a skeleton, Mangin said.
The Swiss report said Arafat's remains and the burial soil contained elevated levels of polonium-210.
Suha Arafat, his widow, called on the Palestinian leadership on Thursday to seek justice for her husband.
Speaking to The Associated Press by phone from the Qatari capital Doha, she did not mention Israel, but argued that only countries with nuclear capabilities have access to polonium.
Asked whether the polonium findings on Arafat's remains could have been the result of contamination, Bochud told AP that he found the scenario very unlikely.
Israeli officials vehemently denied any role in Arafat's death.
Paul Hirschson, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, dismissed the allegations as nonsense.
Former Israeli official Dov Weisglass said Israel had no motive to kill Arafat at a time when he had been sidelined and isolated at his West Bank compound.
Polonium first hit the headlines when it was used to kill KGB agent-turned-Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006.
Asked to compare Arafat's poisoning with the Litvinenko case, Bochud said that it was not a helpful comparison as the British authorities have not made public their findings and the French should not be blamed for not looking for polonium in Arafat's body as it is very unusual.
Polonium can be a byproduct of the chemical processing of uranium, but usually is made artificially in a nuclear reactor or a particle accelerator.

UK: LONDON: YASSER ARAFAT MIDDLE EAST PEACE PROCESS INTERVIEW
English/Nat
PLO chairman Yasser Arafat on Thursday accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of undermining the Middle East peace process.
But he said he had still not lost all hope of achieving a settlement.
In an interview with APTV, Yasser Arafat said he was doing his best to negotiate a settlement and called on Netanyahu to respect agreements already in place.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"It is clear and obvious for everybody that Netanyahu is willing or is trying to avoid the accurate and honest implementation of what has been agreed upon.
SUPER CAPTION: Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Q- Netanyahu says its up to you to move by clamping down on terrorism. What is your response to that?
A - I am not playing. He knows and everybody knows that I am doing 100 percent of my effort. But no one can give 100 percent results. Even the Israelis cannot give 100 percent results. Give me any government all over the world who can give 100 percent results."
SUPER CAPTION: Arafat
SOUNDBITE:(English)
"Q-Are you losing hope?
A- No. I am a pragmatic man, I am not dealing with hopes. "
SUPER CAPTION: Arafat
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Q- Mr. President, there is a lot of concern about your health. Would you like to comment on speculation?
A-I prefer not to speak about it because there are some rumours from the Israeli mass media. No more than that.
Q - So rumours of Parkinson's disease are false?
A- What do you see?
Q - People are worried sir, that is why we ask.
A - Thank you and I am very grateful to those who are asking about me.
Q- But they have nothing to worry about.
A - No"
SUPER CAPTION: Arafat
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I am not asking for the moon. I am asking only that what has been signed and agreed upon in the White House to be respected. Not only that, what I have signed with him, Hebron protocol agreement, he has signed it, he has to respect it.

PLO chairman Yasser Arafat on Thursday accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of undermining the Middle East peace process.
But he said he had still not lost all hope of achieving a settlement.

Even the phrase "blaming the victim" can't convey the arrogance of CNN journalist Christiane Amanpour's March 29 telephone interview with Yasser Arafat . Speaking by phone to the Palestinian leader in his besieged compound, as several of his closest aides were being assassinated by Israeli troops,Amanpour sounded like a reporter from the antebellum South asking slave rebellion leader Nat Turner or Abolitionist John Brown if they would '' rein in the violence."
Arafat was literally being held captive inside his Ramallah headquarters by Israeli settler military might. Tanks circled and shelled his compound. Bulldozers and tank turrets were tearing down the fences and walls around him. Explosions and gunfire crackled and boomed from all directions. Israeli snipers poised on nearby rooftops fired right into the headquarters of the Palestinian Authority.
In the midst of this all-out siege by the generals of Tel Aviv, the highest-paid foreign correspondent in the world asked the Palestinian leader, "What are the conditions like at your compound right now?"
Arafat was used to the Western press personalizing and trivializing the news. "Still you are not following this aggression against the Palestinian people in all of the West Bank and Gaza," he replied. "They have divided Gaza into three parts, completely separated it. And also the aggression and the attack in Ramallah against my headquarters and against the Palestinian people ... all around. At the same time, they are increasing their forces, their military activities to follow up their aggression against many other places, many other towns, many other cities, many other areas in our Palestinian liberated areas."
Amanpour sounded surprised. "Are you under direct physical threat right now?"
Arafat answered, "It seems that you are not following the TVs all over the world. They have destroyed completely seven of our buildings, completely around my office and pounded my office with all their armaments. ... Israel is the real terrorist of the occupation. And especially they are using now all the American weapons against us--F-15s and F-16s and ... rockets and bombers and artillery and everything."
Then Amanpour bared the real role of the imperialist media in times of political and military crisis--to refashion the oppressed into the oppressor. Secretary of State Colin Powell, she said, "called on you to rein in the violence. What do you make of that statement, and can you and will you rein in that violence?"
Arafat could not contain his anger. "Are you asking me while I am under complete siege?"
The CNN star reporter repeated the monstrously loaded question: "Are you able to rein in the violence?"
Arafat blew up. "You are covering, with such questions, the terrorist activities of the Israeli occupation and the Israeli crimes."
He hung up.Amanpour , for once, was at a loss for words.

Filistin lideri Yaser Arafat, CNN muhabiri Christian Amanpour'u frçaladı. Arafat, Amanpour'un, "Filistinli militanları dizginlemek için ne yaptığı" yönündeki sorusunun ardından sinirlenerek, röportajı aniden kesti. Filistin lideri, "General Yaser Arafat ile konuşurken doğru davranmalısınız. Bu sorularla, İsrail işgali ve İsrail'in işlediği suçların getirdiği terörist faaliyetleri haklı çıkarıyorsunuz. Adil olun. Teşekkür ederim, hoşçakalın" ifadelerini kullandı

Following the opening of the Jerusalem tunnels, former PA Chairman Yasser Arafat gives a speech on official Palestinian Authority TV inciting Palestinians to violence and glorifying Martyrdom for Allah. Arafat encourages Palestinians to die as Martyrs while killing Israelis, citing a verse from the Quran that reads “they shall fight in the way of Allah, and shall kill and be killed.” He further motivates Martyrdom-death by saying that “Paradise will be theirs.” The day after Arafat delivered this speech, dozens of people were killed in Palestinian Authority-initiated viol

According to the official PA daily, on Nov. 8, 2000, the day he was killed, before heading towards the areas where Palestinian and Israelis were involved in fighting, Ouda left a wreath around his picture in his room with the words: "The brave Martyr Faris Ouda."
In this clip from official Palestinian Authority television, Yasser Arafat calls Ouda a hero and a Shahid. He calls on Palestinian youth to salute Ouda and refers to Palestinian youth as “peers, friends, brothers and sisters of Faris Ouda.” This is an example of PA glorification of terror and motivating ch

Yasser Arafat was the historic leader of the Palestinians. For more than 30 years he led the battle for an independent Palestinian state. The son of a Palestinian merchant, Arafat was born probably in Cairo, Egypt, in August 1929. The exact date of his birth is unknown. Starting in 1947, Arafat studied engineering at the university in Cairo. At the time, important changes were taking place in countries throughout the Middle East. In 1948, after the end of the Second World War, the UN approved the creation of a state that could receive Jewish victims of Nazi persecution. The Jewish nation known as Israel was created in Palestinian territory, on the border with Egypt. But the land intended for the new Jewish state was already inhabited, mostly by Arabs, although there was already a significant Jewish population. After hostilities broke out in 1948, over 700,000 Arab-Palestinians were forced to leave their own homes. It was the beginning of a conflict between Jews and Arabs that has stained the Middle East with blood for decades.
The young Arafat immediately embraced the Palestinian cause, uniting with militants who wanted to take back their land. Around 1958 he founded an organization called Al Fatah and became its leader. The objective of Al Fatah was to create a Palestinian state by destroying Israel. Al Fatah’s headquarters were initially based in Kuwait. Sought by the Israelis, Al Fatah led the battle against Israel for more than 30 years, moving from Kuwait to Jordan then to Lebanon and finally Tunisia before returning to Palestine. In 1967, in an effort to strengthen the Palestinian cause, Arafat decided to join forces with the PLO, or Palestinian Liberation Organization. The PLO became the Palestinians’ official representation, and in 1969, Arafat became its leader. In 1974 he received an invitation from the UN, even though he was not a head of state. The international community considered this gesture significant. It was recognition of the Palestinians as a population. But the Israeli-Palestinian conflict showed no signs of slowing down. In 1987 the Palestinian population began street protests and a bloody revolt that fully escaped PLO control. The situation became ungovernable. In December 1988 Arafat made a historic shift in policy, declaring the PLO’s decision to renounce the destruction of Israel as a goal. He proposed peaceful cohabitation and the creation of a Palestinian state.
Arafat’s gesture was warmly embraced. In 1993 in Oslo, Israel signed a peace agreement together with the Palestinian leader.
In 1994 Arafat was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize. In July of the same year he settled in Palestine. The peace process lasted a number of years. In 2000 Israeli Premier Ehud Barak proposed a number of territories for the creation of a Palestinian state. Arafat considered Barak’s proposal insufficient and the situation began to deteriorate once again.
In 2001 the new Israeli leader, Ariel Sharon, singled out Arafat, accusing him of tolerating attacks on Israeli civilians conducted by the Islamic group Hamas. Yasser Arafat died on November 11, 2004 in Clamart, France. He was 75. The Palestinian drama has yet to be resolved.

Arafat’s speech after the opening of the Jerusalem tunnels incites Palestinians to violence
http://www.palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=711&fld;_id=721&doc;_id=1474
Following the opening of the Jerusalem tunnels, former PA Chairman Yasser Arafat gives a speech on official Palestinian Authority TV inciting Palestinians to violence and glorifying Martyrdom for Allah. Arafat encourages Palestinians to die as Martyrs while killing Israelis, citing a verse from the Quran that reads “they shall fight in the way of Allah, and shall kill and be killed.” He further motivates Martyrdom-death by saying that “Paradise will be theirs.” The day after Arafat delivered this speech, dozens of people were killed in Palestinian Authority-initiated violence.
Transcript:
Yasser Arafat: "[Quran:] Allah bought from the believers their lives and their wealth because Paradise will be theirs: They shall fight in the way of Allah, and shall kill and be killed."
My righteous brothers, our righteous Martyrs, rest in peace, because our blood is cheap compared to the goal which joined us together and has separated us for a while. But we shall meet soon [as Martyrs], Allah willing, in the highest place in Heaven."

Yasser Arafat encourages Palestinian children to seek death as Martyrs
http://www.palwatch.org/main.aspx?fi=711&fld;_id=722&doc;_id=480
According to the official PA daily, on Nov. 8, 2000, the day he was killed, before heading towards the areas where Palestinian and Israelis were involved in fighting, Ouda left a wreath around his picture in his room with the words: "The brave Martyr Faris Ouda."
In this clip from official Palestinian Authority television, Yasser Arafat calls Ouda a hero and a Shahid. He calls on Palestinian youth to salute Ouda and refers to Palestinian youth as “peers, friends, brothers and sisters of Faris Ouda.” This is an example of PA glorification of terror and motivating children to seek Shahada.
Transcript:
Faris Ouda, 14-year-old Martyr (Shahid):
"Faris Ouda left home with a slingshot, having made a wreath with his picture, and writing: 'The Brave Martyr (Shahid) Faris Ouda.'"
He said to his mother, "Don't worry, mother, Shahada (Martyrdom) is sweet.'"
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 30, 2000; Feb. 3, 2001]
Arafat: "We are saluting the spirit of our hero Shahid, Faris Ouda! Faris Ouda! Faris Ouda! We are proud of you [youth] who represent the steadfastness and the sacrifice of your companion, the hero Shahid, Faris Ouda! Oh, children of Palestine! The peers, friends, brothers and sisters of Faris Ouda."

A nine-month investigation by Al Jazeera discovered rare, radioactive polonium on the ex-Palestinian leader's final belongings. The finding suggests that Arafat was poisoned with polonium, a rare, highly radioactive element. The polonium was found in blood, sweat, urine and saliva stains on his personal effects, and the levels recorded by forensic pathologists in Switzerland - who studied the items - do not occur naturally. Al Jazeera's Clayton Swisher reports.

A world exclusive investigation tells the inside story of the fight for the facts behind Yasser Arafat's death. Following What killed Arafat? which led French prosecutors to open a murder inquiry, this documentary follows the struggle to convince the Palestinian Authority to allow an exhumation of Arafat’s body to test for radioactive poison. Al Jazeera’s Clayton Swisher reports on the tests that led to the Swiss scientists reporting high levels of polonium Yasser Arafat's bones.

Yasser Arafat had promised me an interview while he was in exile in Tunisia but in the end our crew had waited for four days with no result. Our producer scolded the PLO's Swedish representative which had effect. When Arafat one month later visited Sweden for talks with the Prime Minister, Carl Bildt, I was the only Swedish journalist who got an interview with the PLO leader. In the middle of the night, at Haga Palace in Stockholm.

drei Jahre lang in deiner zerbombten Residenz.
