US: PRESIDENT CLINTON BIDS FAREWELL TO LLOYD BENTSEN
Eng/Nat
President Clinton bade a formal farewell to his outgoing Treasury Secretary today (Tuesday).
Lloyd Bentsen has announced that he is retiring from public life on December 22nd, he's been in Mr Clinton's cabinet since the president was elected in 1993.
The incoming Republican Senate leader Bob Dole has said he'll miss Bentsen, but that he can work with his proposed replacement Robert Rubin.
Lloyd Bentsen is a well respected conservative figure in the Democratic Party. Before his cabinet post he was a senator and one-time vice-presidential candidate. He said he was leaving to spend more time with his family.
While President Clinton has come under fire for his economic performance, he spoke of the successes of his economic team in the past two years.
SOUNDBITE:
"The results are there for all to see. The biggest deficit reduction in history. The biggest expansion of trade for a generation. Over 5 (m) million new jobs in this economy on this Christmas than there were two Christmases ago. And this year, more high wage jobs in this economy than in the previous five years combined"
SUPER CAPTION: President Bill Clinton
Lloyd Bentsen said he was proud of his contribution to the controversial health care reforms.
SOUNDBITE:
"Mr President, I have worked to try to make a difference over these years. From increased retirement security for the elderly, to increased access to health care to lower income women and children. And I think we advanced that health care debate substantially, and I am confident that legislation improving our system will prevail"
SUPER CAPTION: Lloyd Bentsen, retiring Treasury Secretary
His proposed replacement Robert Rubin made it plain that he doesn't believe in easy fixes.
SOUNDBITE:
"As you have said so often, there are no easy answers to the tough questions of economic policy. And all of us on the economic team have been proud of your absolute insistence on real numbers, no gimmicks, real measures that recognise the costs and the trade offs and fiscal responsibility"
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Rubin, Treasury Secretary
Rubin, who amassed a multimillion-dollar fortune on Wall Street before joining the administration, will have to win Senate approval for the Cabinet job, but he has already had the all-important approval of incoming Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole.
