Why Hindus Don't Eat Holy Cow (Beef), important to Hindus, Freedom In Hinduism ~ Jaggi Vasudev
Why Hindus Don't Eat Holy Cow (Beef), important to Hindus, Freedom In Hinduism ~ Jaggi Vasudev
Yogi, mystic and visionary, Sadhguru is a spiritual master with a difference. An arresting blend of profundity and pragmatism, his life and work serves as a reminder that yoga is a contemporary science, vitally relevant to our times.
Why is the cow important to Hindus?
In Hinduism, the cow is revered as the source of food and symbol of life and may never be killed. However, many non-Hindus interpret these beliefs to mean that Hindus worship cows. This is not true. It is more accurate to say the cow is taboo in the Hindu religion, rather than sacred. This is just one example of the misunderstandings people have about the Hindu faith.
Furthermore, cows do not have an especially charmed life in India. Sometimes people around the world see images of India in print or on television, or they travel there, and see cows in public places, unfenced and unrestrained. From such scenes, they conclude that Indians consider cows gods, but this is a false idea and below you will find clarification on this subject.
History of the "Sacred" Cow
In ancient India, oxen and bulls were sacrificed to the gods and their meat was eaten. But even then the slaughter of milk-producing cows was prohibited. Verses of the Rigveda refer to the cow as Devi (goddess), identified with Aditi (mother of the gods) herself.
Even when meat-eating was permitted, the ancient Vedic scriptures encouraged vegetarianism. One scripture says, "There is no sin in eating meat... but abstention brings great rewards." (The Laws of Man, V/56). (Go here to learn about The Vedas.)
Later, in the spiritually fertile period that produced Jainism and Buddhism, Hindus stopped eating beef. This was mostly like for practical reasons as well as spiritual. It was expensive to slaughter an animal for religious rituals or for a guest, and the cow provided an abundance of important products, including milk, browned butter for lamps, and fuel from dried dung.
Some scholars believe the tradition came to Hinduism through the influence of strictly vegetarian Jainism. But the cow continued to be especially revered and protected among the animals of India.
By the early centuries AD, the cow was designated as the appropriate gift to the brahmans (high-caste priests) and it was soon said that to kill a cow is equal to killing a brahman. The importance of the pastoral element in the Krishna stories, particularly from the 10th century onward, further reinforced the sanctity of the cow.

Breaking News: For all Hindus world wide
Our solution to prevent Hindus around the world from performing Auspicious events during Inauspicious times. Read the description for complete details
About Shubh Kaal Application
After years of research conducted by a panel of experts in Hinduism from the Estonian Hindu Society, it was found that Hindus from around the world have been performing their spiritual and auspicious ceremonies at inauspicious times making the rituals ineffective. The reason behind this discovery came as a shock because half the population do not know the significance of these times and do not know the scientific and the religious reasoning behind them.
According to ancient Hindu belief, time is considered as the most important factor in determining one's destiny. Usually people consult a Panditji or a relative from India to get the auspicious time during the day to start any important work. The family members in India would consult their religious leaders or read from the panchang what the auspicious time is and let their family abroad know. The fundamental flaw in this whole exercise is that the auspicious and inauspicious time given by them is meant for India, the auspicious and inauspicious time for a particular day is dependent on the sunrise and sunset time in that particular location.
Luckily God created man, man created Hinduism , and we created Shubh Kaal for you to follow Hinduism. Shubh Kaal is a multi-platform app, which provides the user with exact info about the auspicious/inauspicious time for a certain day and location. The APP calculates the sunrise and sunset times of the user's current location taking the longitude and latitude for that location. The unique feature of the app is that the user can see the times for Rahu kaal, Gulika kaal and Yamaganda kaal from any location.

Do Some Hindu Scriptures Glorify War
Hinduism, like most religions, believes that war is undesirable and avoidable because it involves killing fellow humans. However, it recognizes that there can be situations when waging war is a better path than tolerating evil. Does that mean Hinduism glorifies war?
The very fact that the backdrop of the Gita, which Hindus consider sacrosanct, is the battlefield, and its main protagonist a warrior, may lead many to believe that Hinduism supports the act of war.
In fact, the Gita neither sanctions war nor condemns it. Why? Let's find out.

Why Julia Roberts Became a Hindu
Academy Award winning Hollywood actor Julia Roberts, who recently converted to Hinduism, reconfirmed her faith in Hinduism while commenting that her "opting for Hinduism is not a religious gimmick".
In an interview to The Hindu, "India's National Newspaper" dated November 13, 2010, Roberts said: "It is similar to Patsy of Razor's Edge by Somerset Maugham. We share a common aspect of finding peace and tranquility of mind in Hinduism, one of the oldest and respected religions of civilization".
Clarifying that actual spiritual satisfaction was the real reason behind her converting to Hinduism, Julia Roberts said: "I have no intention of dem

The Sacred Texts of the Hindus
The Sacred Texts of the Hindus
According to Swami Vivekananda, "the accumulated treasury of spiritual laws discovered by different persons in different times" constitutes the sacred Hindu texts. Collectively referred to as the Shastras, there are two types of sacred writings in the Hindu scriptures: Shruti (heard) and Smriti (memorized).
Sruti literature refers to the habit of ancient Hindu saints who led a solitary life in the woods, where they developed a consciousness that enabled them to 'hear' or cognize the truths of the universe.
Sruti literatures are of two parts: the Vedas and the Upanishads.
There are four Vedas:
• The Rig Veda -"Royal Knowledge"

Hindus from all walks of life gather for ritual bathing, believing that their sins will be washed away. The bathing is followed by spiritual purification and blessings for one's soul.
Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred river. It is considered to be the largest peaceful gathering in the world where around 100 million people were expected to visit during the Maha Kumbh Mela in 2013 in Allahabad.
It is held every third year at one of the four places by rotation: Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayaga), Nashik and Ujjain. Thus the Kumbh Mela is held at each of these four places every twelfth year.

The Bhagavad Gita & War
The story of Arjuna, the fabled bowman of the Mahabharata, brings out Lord Krishna's view of war in the Gita. The great battle of Kurukshetra is about to begin. Krishna drives Arjuna's chariot drawn by white horses into the centre of the battlefield between the two armies. This is when Arjuna realizes that many of his kinsmen and old friends are among the ranks of the enemy, and is appalled by the fact that he is about to kill those he loves. He is unable to stand there any longer, refuses to fight and says that he does not "desire any subsequent victory, kingdom, or happiness." Arjuna questions, "How could we be happy by killing our own kinsmen?"
Krishna in order to persuade him to fight, reminds him that there is no such act as killing. He explains that the "atman" or soul is the only reality; the body is simply an appearance, its existence and annihilation are illusory. And for Arjuna, a member of the "Kshatriya" or the warrior caste, fighting the battle is 'righteous'.
It is a just cause and to defend it is his duty or dharma.
"…if you are killed (in the battle) you will ascend to heaven. On the contrary if you win the war you will enjoy the comforts of earthly kingdom. Therefore, get up and fight with determination… With equanimity towards happiness and sorrow, gain and loss, victory and defeat, fight. This way you will not incur any sin." (The Bhagavad Gita)
Krishna's advice to Arjuna forms the rest of the Gita, at the end of which, Arjuna is ready to go to war.
This is also where karma, or the Law of Cause & Effect comes into play. Swami Prabhavananda interprets this part of the Gita and comes up with this brilliant explanation: "In the purely physical sphere of action, Arjuna is, indeed, no longer a free agent. The act of war is upon him; it has evolved out of his previous actions. At any given moment in time, we are what we are; and we have to accept the consequences of being ourselves. Only through this acceptance can we begin to evolve further. We may select the battleground. We cannot avoid the battle… Arjuna is bound to act, but he is still free to make his choice between two different ways of performing the action."
Peace! Peace! Peace!
Aeons before the Gita, the Rig Veda professed peace.
"Come together, talk together / Let our minds be in harmony.
Common be our prayer / Common be our end,
Common be our purpose / Common be our deliberations,
Common be our desires / United be our hearts,
United be our intentions / Perfect be the union among us." (Rig Veda)
The Rig Veda also laid down the right conduct of war. Vedic rules maintain that it is unjust to strike someone from behind, cowardly to poison the tip of the arrow and heinous to attack the sick or old, children and women.
Gandhi & Ahimsa
The Hindu concept of non-violence or non-injury called "ahimsa" was successfully employed by Mahatma Gandhi as the means to fight the oppressive British Raj in India in the early part of the last century.
However, as historian and biographer Raj Mohan Gandhi points out, "…we should also recognise that for Gandhi (and most Hindus) ahimsa could co-exist with some carefully understood acquiescence in the use of force. (To give only one example, Gandhi's Quit India resolution of 1942 stated that Allied troops fighting Nazi Germany and Militarist Japan could use India's soil if the country was freed.)"
In his essay 'Peace, war and Hinduism', Raj Mohan Gandhi goes on to say: "If some Hindus claimed that their ancient epic, the Mahabharata, sanctioned and indeed glorified war, Gandhi pointed to the empty stage with which the epic ends - to the noble or ignoble killing of almost everyone of its vast cast of characters - as ultimate proof of the folly of revenge and violence. And to those who spoke, as many do today, of the naturalness of war, Gandhi's reply, first expressed in 1909, was that war brutalizes men of naturally gentle character and that its path of glory is red with the blood of murder."
The Bottom Line
To sum up, war is justified only when it is meant to fight evil and injustice, not for the purpose of aggression or terrorizing people. According to Vedic injunctions, aggressors and terrorists are at once to be killed and no sin is incurred by such annihilations.

Clarifying that actual spiritual satisfaction was the real reason behind her converting to Hinduism, Julia Roberts said: "I have no intention of demeaning any other religion simply because of my fondness for Hinduism. I don't believe in comparing religions or human beings. A comparison is a very mean thing to do. I have received real spiritual satisfaction through Hinduism."
Roberts, who grew up with a Catholic mother and Baptist father, reportedly became interested in Hinduism after seeing a picture of the deity Hanuman and the Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba, who died in 1973 and whom she never met. She revealed in the past that the entire Roberts-Moder family went to temple together to "chant and pray and celebrate." She then announced, "I'm definitely a practicing Hindu."
According to reports, Roberts has been interested in yoga for quite some time. She was in the northern Indian state of Haryana (India) in September 2009 to shoot Eat, Pray, Love in an 'ashram' or hermitage. In January 2009, she was seen sporting a 'bindi' on her forehead during her trip to India.
Her film production company is called 'Red Om Films,' named after the Hindu symbol 'Om' which is considered the mystical syllable containing the universe. There were reports that she was trying to adopt a child from India and her kids shaved their heads during her last visit to India.
Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, interpreting wisdom of ancient Hindu scriptures, suggested Roberts to realize the Self or pure consciousness through meditation. Hindus believe that real happiness comes from within, and God can be found within one's heart through meditation.
Quoting Shvetashvatara Upanishad, Zed pointed out to Roberts to be always aware that "worldly life is the river of God, flowing from him and flowing back to him." Stressing the importance of meditation, he quoted Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, and pointed out that if one meditates upon the Self, and realizes it, they can come to understand the meaning of life.
Rajan Zed further said that seeing Roberts' devotion, he would pray to lead her to the 'eternal joy.' If she needed any assistance in deeper Hinduism exploration, he or other Hindu scholars would be glad to help, Zed added.
This Diwali, Julia Roberts was in the news for her comment that ‘Diwali should be celebrated unanimously throughout the world as a gesture of goodwill’. Roberts equated Christmas with Diwali and said that both “are festivals of lights, good spirits and death of evil”. She further pointed out that Diwali “not only belongs to Hinduism but is universal in nature and in its essence too. Diwali ignites the values of self confidence, love for humanity, peace, prosperity and above all eternity which goes beyond all mortal factors… When I think of Diwali, I can never imagine a world broken into fragments by narrow feelings of communalism and religion which does not care for human benevolence.”
Julia Roberts said: "Ever since I developed my liking and fondness for Hinduism, I have been attracted and deeply fascinated by many facets of the multi-dimensional Hinduism… spirituality in it transcends many barriers of mere religion”. Talking of India, she promised “to return to this sacred land again and again for the best of creativity."

• The Sama Veda - "Knowledge of Chants"
• The Yajur Veda - "Knowledge of Sacrificial Rituals"
• The Atharva Veda - "Knowledge of Incarnations"
There are 108 extant Upanishads, of which 10 are most important: Isa, Kena, Katha, Prashna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Taitiriya, Aitareya, Chandogya, Brihadaranyaka.
Smriti Literature refers to 'memorized' or 'remembered' poetry and epics. They are more popular with Hindus, because they are easy to understand, explains universal truths through symbolism and mythology, and contain some of the most beautiful and exciting stories in the history of religion world literature. The three most important of Smriti literature are:
• The Bhagavad Gita - The most well known of the Hindu scriptures, called the "Song of the Adorable One", written about the 2nd century BC and forms the sixth part of Mahabharata. It contains some of the most brilliant theological lessons about the nature of God and of life ever written.
• The Mahabharata - The world's longest epic poem written about 9th century BC, and deals with the power struggle between the Pandava and the Kaurava families, with an intertwining of numerous episodes that make up life.
• The Ramayana - The most popular of Hindu epics, composed by Valmiki around 4th or 2nd centuries BC with later additions up to about 300 CE. It depicts the story of the royal couple of Ayodha - Ram and Sita and a host of other characters and their exploits.

Pilgrims bathe in the Ganges River during Kumbh Mela
Ardha ("Half") Kumbh Mela is held at only two places, Haridwar and Allahabad, every sixth year. The rivers at these four places are: the Ganges (Ganga) at Haridwar, the confluence (Sangam) of the Ganges and the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati at Allahabad, the Godawari at Nashik, and the Shipra at Ujjain. The name Kumbh Mela comes from Hindi, and in the original Sanskrit and other Indian languages it is more often known as Kumbha Mela. Kumbha means a pitcher and Mela means fair in Sanskrit. The pilgrimage is held for about one and a half months at each of these four places where it is believed in Hinduism that drops of nectar fell from the kumbha carried by gods after the sea was churned. Bathing in these rivers is thought to cleanse one of all sins. The festival is billed as the "world’s largest congregation of religious pilgrims". There is no precise method of ascertaining the number of pilgrims, and the estimates of the number of pilgrims bathing on the most auspicious day may vary; approximately 80 million people attended on 14 February 2013.

In today’s (01st October, 2014) morning Satsang, Paramahamsa Nithyananda explains how all of us carry the inner image that we have a form. This means that our image about life is form-based and we can only relate to God while he or she is in a form. The brilliance of the Vedic masters has solved this issue by creating a powerful way to relate to the cosmic energy through deity worship. Deity worship is THE way to bring world peace and bliss to humanity
