This element is found in almost all rare earth minerals (including monazite, xenotime, and yttria (Y2O3)) and in uranium ores but is never found in nature as a free element. Annual production is around 400 tons.
Important mining occurs in the USA, Russia, Norway and Madagascar.
Uses
Combined with europium to make red phosphors for colour TVs. Yttrium oxide and iron oxide combine to form a crystal garnet used in radars. It is also used to increase the strength of aluminium and magnesium alloys. Also used in lasers, camera lenses and fireproof bricks. Yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) has a hardness of 8.5 and is a simulated diamond.
Yttrium was used as a "secret" element in a superconductor developed at the University of Houston, YBaCuO. This superconductor operated above 90K, an amazing feat because it can operate at above liquid nitrogen's boiling point. (Y1.2Ba0.8CuO4). The matter created was a multi-crystal multi-phase mineral, of which most were black and green.

In 1787, Carl Axel Arrhenius found a new mineral near Ytterby in Sweden and named it "ytterbite", after the village. Johan Gadolin discovered yttrium's oxide in Arrhenius' sample in 1789, and Anders Gustaf Ekeberg named the new oxide "yttria". Elemental yttrium was first isolated in 1828 by Friedrich Wöhler.
The most important use of yttrium is in making phosphors, particularly the red phosphors used in television set cathode ray tube displays and in LEDs. It is also used in the production of electrodes, electrolytes, electronic filters, lasers and superconductors; various medical applications; and the tracing of various materials to enhance their properties. Yttrium has no known biological role, and exposure to yttrium compounds can cause lung disease in humans.

As expected by periodic trends, it is less electronegative than its predecessor in the group, scandium, and less electronegative than the next member of period 5, zirconium; additionally, it is of comparable electronegativity to its successor in its group, lutetium, due to the lanthanide contraction. Yttrium is the first d-block element in the fifth period.

Had to do a creative project for my Chem 101 class, this is the result. There's a lot of Yttrium on the moon. It's also found in TVs (hence tv noises, including one exploding). This took about two hours to finish, so the mastering may be iffy. Like and enjoy!!! #DontAskDJsToBeCreative

This element is found in almost all rare earth minerals (including monazite, xenotime, and yttria (Y2O3)) and in uranium ores but is never found in nature as a free element. Annual production is around 400 tons.
Important mining occurs in the USA, Russia, Norway and Madagascar.
Uses
Combined with europium to make red phosphors for colour TVs. Yttrium oxide and iron oxide combine to form a crystal garnet used in radars. It is also used to increase the strength of aluminium and magnesium alloys. Also used in lasers, camera lenses and fireproof bricks. Yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) has a hardness of 8.5 and is a simulated diamond.
Yttrium was used as a "secret" element in a superconductor developed at the University of Houston, YBaCuO. This superconductor operated above 90K, an amazing feat because it can operate at above liquid nitrogen's boiling point. (Y1.2Ba0.8CuO4). The matter created was a multi-crystal multi-phase mineral, of which most were black and green.

"Yttrium" is a chemical element with symbol "Y" and atomic number 39. It is a silvery-metallic transition metal chemically similar to the lanthanides and it has often been classified as a "rare earth element". Yttrium is almost always found combined with the lanthanides in rare earth minerals and is never found in nature as a free element. Its only stable isotope, 89 Y, is also its only naturally occurring isotope.
In 1787, Carl Axel Arrhenius found a new mineral near Ytterby in Sweden and named it "ytterbite", after the village. Johan Gadolin discovered yttrium's oxide in Arrhenius' sample in 1789, and Anders Gustaf Ekeberg named the new oxide "yttria". Elemental yttrium was first isolated in 1828 by Friedrich Wöhler.
The most important use of yttrium is in making phosphors, particularly the red phosphors used in television set cathode ray tube displays and in LEDs. It is also used in the production of electrodes, electrolytes, electronic filters, lasers and superconductors; various medical applications; and the tracing of various materials to enhance their properties. Yttrium has no known biological role, and exposure to yttrium compounds can cause lung disease in humans.
Yttrium is a soft, silver-metallic, lustrous and highly crystalline transition metal in group 3. As expected by periodic trends, it is less electronegative than its predecessor in the group, scandium, and less electronegative than the next member of period 5, zirconium; additionally, it is of comparable electronegativity to its successor in its group, lutetium, due to the lanthanide contraction. Yttrium is the first d-block element in the fifth period.
