About Small Potatoes: Who Killed The USFL?
Film Summary
In 1983 the upstart United States Football League (USFL) had the audacity to challenge the almighty NFL. The new league did the unthinkable by playing in the spring and plucked three straight Heisman Trophy winners away from the NFL. The 12-team USFL played before crowds that averaged 25,000 and started off with respectable TV ratings.
But with success came expansion and new owners, including a certain high profile and impatient real estate baron whose vision was at odds with the league's founders. Soon, the USFL was reduced to waging a desperate anti-trust lawsuit against the NFL, which yielded an ironic verdict that effectively forced the league out of business. Now, almost a quarter of a century later, Academy Award-nominated and Peabody Award-winning director Mike Tollin, himself once a chronicler of the league, will showcase the remarkable influence of those three years on football history and attempt to answer the question, "Who Killed the USFL?"
Director's Take
Twenty-five years ago, I started my first company and named it Halcyon Days Productions. Somehow, my partners and I landed the exclusive production rights for the fledgling United States Football League, and before we knew it we were knee-deep in game tapes and producing weekly highlight shows for ABC. Many involved, from owners to coaches to players to fans to members of the media, believed that this new spring football league was something special. Three straight years the USFL did the unthinkable and plucked the Heisman Trophy winner away from the NFL. The spring games received good TV ratings and were played before larger than expected enthusiastic crowds. Rule changes made the game more exciting and unpredictable, and the spring league seemed the perfect bridge from the Super Bowl to Labor Day for a football-starved nation.
So what happened? Why didn't it last?
Well, it seems that a certain high-profile and impatient team owner, whose name now adorns towers and hotels and golf courses all over the world, had convinced his colleagues that the league should either move to a fall season and go head-to-head with the NFL, or fold its tents. So after three years of play, the USFL suspended play and focused its efforts on an anti-trust lawsuit against the NFL. And after the jury ruled the USFL owners would have to divvy up the princely sum of three dollars, the full amount of the settlement, the tents were indeed packed up hastily.
In the ensuing 23 years, several other alternative pro football leagues have tried and failed. But the influence of the USFL can be seen every Sunday in the fall, and the memories linger of a dream nearly realized but sadly cut short.
Now I'm excited to be given the chance to re-live those "halcyon days," to share the memories with the men who made it happen, and to answer the question once and for all -- who killed the USFL?About Small Potatoes: Who Killed The USFL? USFL Championship - Sunday, July 14, 1985
Attendance: 49,263
TV: ABC
With all the doom and despair surrounding the season, the 1985 Championship Game was an exciting contest that was up for grabs until the very end. A good crowd of 49,263 attended the final USFL contest that started with rain pounding the Meadowlands artificial surface. The rain was a blessing for Baltimore and its ball control offense featuring the running of Kelvin Bryant, while the weather hampered the big play Hebert to Carter passing attack. Hebert and Stars quarterback Chuck Fusina said that the new footballs used for the big game got slick and were difficult to throw. That could be part of the reason why Invader strong safety David Greenwood scored on a 44 yard interception return in the first half. The Stars contained Anthony Carter in the opening half, allowing Carter only a four yard grab.
Carter, though, began to provide spark to Oakland's offense in the second half. He put the Invaders in front 24-21 with a seven yard touchdown catch from Hebert just before the start of the 4th quarter. Baltimore regained the lead with a 49 yard drive capped by a 7 yard touchdown run by Kelvin Bryant with 8 minutes and 15 seconds left to go. Oakland started its final drive, down by four points, from its own five yard line. Oakland made its way to the Baltimore five yard line. Facing third down and two, Oakland Running Back Tom Newton was penalized 15 yards for a personal foul against Stars' cornerback Jonathan Sutton. Oakland Coach Charlie Sumner was upset that such a great game would come down to a scuffle. The penalty forced Oakland back to the Baltimore 20 with only enough time for Hebert to attempt two passes into the end zone, both of which fell incomplete to Gordon Banks. The Stars had the ball and their second consecutive USFL Championship.

The Philadelphia Stars caught up with the New Jersey Generals at the right time, in a playoff game, and thrashed them, 28-7.
With the running back Kelvin Bryant scoring three touchdowns, the Stars won all the small struggles that make up a football game and ended the Generals' season without argument.
The result wiped clean the two losses, their only two, to the Generals in the regular season and moved the Stars (17-2) to the Eastern Conference title game in the United States Football League playoffs.
On a humid afternoon following rain, the attendance was only 19,038 at the home stadium of the University of Pennsylvania, which has a 60,546-seat capacity.
The Stars' ultimate goal is a second consecutive appearance in the U.S.F.L. championship game, which they lost to the Panthers last year.
Herschel Walker of the Generals added, ''When you play a team as good as Philadelphia, you have to put points on the board when you get in their end.''
And that the Generals, whose season ended at 14-5, did not do. They moved the ball well against the league's top-rated defensive unit but did not get the big play, or even the medium-sized one, that must come from the quarterback position in playoff contests.
Sipe had his troubles. His late pass, late by a split-second, to his tight end, Jeff Spek, was intercepted by Scott Woerner at the Stars' 15-yard line, ending the Generals' first thrust.
Philadelphia jumped out to a 28-0 lead and never looked back...the game was played at Franklin Field because the Phillies were scheduled in Veterans Stadium...both teams dressed at the Vet because the locker rooms were too small at Franklin...the teams then walked a block to Franklin Field.

Attendance: 32,000,

Rollie Dotsch may have set a precedent of sorts by giving his Birmingham Stallions a day off to cool off before meeting the Tampa Bay Bandits in the United States Football League playoffs.
Joe Cribbs, the league's leading rusher, gained 112 yards, Danny Miller kicked five field goals and the Birmingham defense set up two touchdowns to advance to the conference final in Philadelphia.
Miller booted field goals of 42, 49,35,42 and 32 yards.
Cnbbs, with 1,467 yards in the regular season, scored on a 3 yard run in the third period to give the Stallions a 27-11 lead.
Cnbbs also caught three passes for 55 yards. One was a 29-yarder to the Tampa Bay 1 in the first period to set up the first of two short scoring runs by quarterback Cliff Stoudt.
An interception by Chuck Clanton and a fumble recovery by Buddy Aydelette put Birmingham in position for two of its touchdowns.
