I fokus för min forskning är mediers påverkan på samhälle, ekonomi, politik och vardagsliv, samt hur samhället transformerar medierna. Den största delen av min vetenskapliga verksamhet innefattar analyser av informationssamhället, särskilt Internet och samhälle. Min forskningsansats är en kombination av kritisk medie- och kommunikationsvetenskap, social informatik, teknik- och vetenskapsstudier (STS), politisk ekonomi och kritisk teori.

Internet och datorer har fått genomsyra vår kommunikation och våra liv: I Sverige är 85% av befolkningen datoranvändare, 78% av alla hushåll har tillgång till Internet hemma, 83% av befolkningen använder e-post, 71% använder Internetbank, 50% läser nättidningar, 50% tittar på online-TV eller lyssnar på online-radio (Eurostat 2009). Av svenska Internetanvändare i åldersgruppen 18–25 deltar 36% i online communities (till exempel Facebook), men bara 14% i åldersgruppen 36–45 och 0% i åldersgruppen 55–65 (World Internet Institute 2009). Detta visar att Internet också är ett stratifierat utrymme som vi behöver förstå för att kunna förbättra. Jag har analyserat Internets möjligheter, risker och problem. Analyserna gäller i synnerhet ”sociala medier”, till exempel Facebook, Wikipedia, YouTube, Twitter eller MySpace.

Jag har också analyserat maktstrukturer på Internet och i informationssamhället. Exempel är studier av övervakning av användarna på Facebook och Google och analyser av marknadsmakten av Internetföretagen.
I vilken sorts samhälle lever vi? Vilken roll har kunskap och informations- och kommunikationsteknologier (IKT) i det nuvarande samhället? En viktig fokus för min forskning är att studera och mäta informationssamhället. Mitt arbete kombinerar kritisk teori, empirisk forskning och informationsetik. Jag vill bidra till att skapa ett globalt hållbart informationssamhälle för alla.

The focus of my research is the media’s impact on society, economy, politics and everyday life, and how society transforms the media. The largest part of my academic activities is focused on the analysis of the information society, particularly the Internet and Society. My research approach is a combination of critical media and communication studies, social informatics, science and technology studies (STS), political economy and critical theory.

Internet and computers have permeated our communication and our lives: In Sweden, 85% of the population are computer users, 78% of all households have Internet access at home, 83% of the population uses e-mail, 71% uses online banking, 50% reads newspapers , 50% watches online TV or listens to online radio (Eurostat 2009). 36% of Swedish Internet users aged 18-25 are involved in online communities (eg Facebook), but only 14% of those aged 36-45 and 0% in the age group 55-65 (World Internet Institute 2009). This shows that the Internet also is a stratified space, which we need to understand in order to improve it. I have analyzed the potential of the Internet, risks and problems. The analysis is particularly true of “social media” such as Facebook, Wikipedia, YouTube, Twitter or MySpace.

I have also analyzed the power structures of the Internet and the information society. Examples are studies of surveillance of users on Facebook and Google and the analysis of the market power of Internet companies.
In what kind of society do we live? What is the role of knowledge and information and communication technologies (ICTs) in contemporary society? An important focus of my research is to study and measure the information society. My work combines critical theory, empirical research and information ethics. I want to help create a global sustainable information society for all.
