Music makes memory stick. Memorize the map of Africa by singing a song to a tune you already know. Set to the traditional song This Little Light of Mine, learn this song and get an A on your Africa map test.
Route: Like a puzzle we do the edges first. Starting at the bottom and going clockwise which is to the left and up if you didn't know that yet. Second we fill in the middle and then head out and do the islands. There are lots of clues in the song and abbreviations like DR. Congo is Democratic Republic of Congo. CAR is Central African Republic. If you can picture a specific car like a monster truck or a Ferrari or something you really are into you will remember better. Know anyone named Chad, Molly? Picture that person when you are singing the song. I'll post more tips at www.songsforchildren.org for this song if you want more tips. Enjoy and good luck!
Warning. Western Sahara and Somaliland are not officially recognized countries at the time this was made but they are big chunks of the map that were useful for the song so they made the cut.

Guy says Tiwa Savage sounded like a two- year- old being dragged out of a toy store in the song while he thought Banky W was going to faint. #NoChill

Southern African leaders meet as region faces food crisis
Leaders of 15 southern African countries will gather for an annual summit on Monday as the region grapples with serious food shortages that have left a record number of people needing aid.
A toxic mix of erratic rains, abnormally high temperatures and floods have wreaked havoc on farming, writing off the bulk of this year's crop.
An estimated 27.4 million people out of the region's combined population of 292 million -- or nearly one in 10 people -- will be depending on food handouts by the end of the year.
Yields of the staple corn have shrunk by up to 90 percent in some countries of the 15-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC)

n the fight against Ebola and Xenophobia, 180 African artists from seven African countries united and re-sang Michael Jackson's 'We are the World'. Etcetera is now slamming the heck out of the song and the Nigerian singers that were featured in it - Kcee, Sean Tizzle, Banky W etc. And you know how he writes with his 'bad mouth', lol. Guy says Tiwa Savage sounded like a two- year- old being dragged out of a toy store in the song while he thought Banky W was going to faint. #NoChill
Well, I think I’m finally safe to write this article, since I’ve set up my e-mail software to automatically filter out any messages containing swear words.
Sincerely, I don’t know if there’s any song that made me change the TV station faster than this one. If I didn’t, I’d have been doomed to have a group of adults with hideous and unsync voices chanting, “ we are the children” over and over in my head for the next six months.
And that certainly isn’t all that’s wrong with the song. Michael Jackson would probably be spitting and cursing in his grave right now, like a pregnant woman with whitlow on
her ten fingers and toes. What the heck were they thinking changing his beautifully composed piece of art to the most insipid crap ever written?
I’m going to tell you this for free; don’t listen to We Are The World by African all stars unless you’re trying to get a bone out of your throat. That is only when the song would be useful.
We know that African music isn’t made up of the best singers anymore, but honestly, how did they think that they could fill up a seven-minute song with nothing but monotonous chanting of the same feeble chorus over and over again?
The humorous highlight of the song is Kcee’s ridiculous line “There’s a choice we making, we saving our own lives.” Never has the word (saving our own lives) meant so opposite. And the only choice that could have been made by the organisers was not to have included Kcee in the song. He was even off key for Christ sake. Kcee, your hilarious accent is to be commended.
Luckily I could warn the rest of you who haven’t listened. Kcee is the first reason this is the most repulsive rendition of this song ever.
There were other worse vocals like Sean Tizzle’s, but Tiwa Savage sounded like a two- year- old being dragged out of a toy store. She should know when to keep the vibrato off her voice. And for a minute I thought Banky W was going to faint. Whoever chose the key to this song should have been reminded that most Nigerian singers are all about auto-tune and can’t hold their notes.
Jesus Christ, what is happening to music? This is easily the worst combination of voices in human history. Only the most despicable revisionist historian could possibly claim that this song is anything close to good. It’s nothing more than a hideous irritation festival from the individual who sold the idea to the sponsors.

US Failing to Monitor Minerals Imported From African Conflict Zone - Report. 19 August 03:38
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Companies that filed disclosures used one or more of the four "conflict minerals"- tantalum, tin, tungsten and gold — that Secretary of State John Kerry has determined to be financing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) or adjoining countries, the GAO said.
"[C]ompany disclosures filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the first time in 2014 indicated that most companies were unable to determine the source of their conflict minerals."
Almost two thirds of the companies, or 67 percent, "were unable to determine whether those minerals came from the DRC or adjoining countries (Covered Countries), and none could determine whether the minerals financed or benefited armed groups in those countries," the report stated.
Most of the companies providing the formal disclosures, or 878 percent, were based in the United States and almost all of them reported performing country-of-origin inquiries for the minerals they purchased, the GAO noted.
However, "Companies GAO spoke to cited difficulty obtaining necessary information from suppliers because of delays and other challenges in communication," the report also said.
The adjoining countries according to the State Department regulation include: Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, DRC, the Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, the GAO added.
"Implementation of the US conflict minerals strategy faces multiple obstacles outside the control of the US government."
Armed groups in eastern DRC continue to commit severe human rights abuses and profit from the exploitation of minerals, according to the United Nations, the GAO added.

The United States has launched negotiations with a number of North African countries to position drones on their territory to monitor the Islamic State's activities in Libya, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday citing undisclosed US officials.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the source, a base in North Africa close to Islamic State strongholds in Libya would help the United States fill gaps in what is happening there.
"Right now, what we are trying to do is address some real intelligence challenges," a senior administration official said.
However, the official did not specify which African countries have been negotiating with the United States. According to the Wall Street Journal, none of the countries in the region gave consent to the deployment of the United States' drone base.

Please change your ways and earn your way to the top instead of trying to make unhealthy wealth and riches that will later get you into troubles in the hands of the law.
You are misrepresenting those of us who are genuinely working hard to make ends meet and supporting our families in our homes of origin.
You are also misrepresenting our countries. Please change your ways and use your knowledge and strengths on profitable ventures.
May God bless you as you do. Princess seyie said so.

Africa's millionaire explosion: 10 countries where the ultra - wealthy are booming
Africa's wealthy elite is expanding at a dramatic pace. In fact, according to a report by New World Wealth, the number of African millionaires has risen at twice the pace of the rest of the world in the last 15 years.
Though huge parts of Africa remain locked in extreme poverty, it's impossible to miss the emergence of ultra-wealthy individuals.
Here we've included the nations where the number of HNWI (high net worth individuals) has risen by more than 100% in the 15 years between 2000 and 2014. New World Wealth defines HNWIs as people with net assets of $1 million (£645,000) or more.
Overall in Africa, the number of HNWIs has risen by 145% over the period, while the world in general has seen an increase of 73%.

Southern African leaders meet as region faces food crisis
Leaders of 15 southern African countries will gather for an annual summit on Monday as the region grapples with serious food shortages that have left a record number of people needing aid.

Yields of the staple corn have shrunk by up to 90 percent in some countries of the 15-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC), a June report by the group said.
"Given the hazards faced, the number of food insecure people ... increased by 13 percent (to) 27.4 million this year compared to 24.3 million for last

High Level Event II -- Leadership for the Africa we Want - Kigali, Wednesday 22 May 2015
Welcome Remarks:
Dr. Donald Kaberuka, President of AfDB Group
Panelists:
- H. E. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda
- H. E. Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya
- Dr. Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson, African Union Commission
- H. E. Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki, former President, Republic of South Africa
- Hon. Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
- Dr. Mo Ibrahim, Founder and Chair, Mo Ibrahim Foundation
Description:
The World Economic Forum (WEF) report for 2014 identifies two critical leadership problems globally -- the first is that there is a leadership deficit, and the second is that there is a lack of trust in policies and programmes pursued by leaders. Good leadership will be crucial for enabling Africa to exploit the window of opportunity that has opened up in the past decade, notably its natural resource boom. However, experience indicates that leaders that are resourceful and accountable may be more important "initial conditions" for the development and transformation of their countries than resource abundance per se. Where leadership was inadequate, the pace of industrialization and innovation stagnated, and in some cases was reversed, irrespective of the size of the resource base. In the absence of good leadership, Africa will not be able to reach its global potential. That leadership should be able to produce domestic consensus or coalitions that ensure that sufficient resources and political attention are key to the goal of economic transformation. Some prerequisite elements are a capable state; government and private sector collaboration; a supportive environment for competitiveness; and continuous leveraging and development of the knowledge base.
Issues for Discussion
1. How can we nurture visionary African leadership to address any leadership deficit and engender trust in policies?
2. Does Africa need effective institutions more than it needs strong leaders?

Warning. Western Sahara and Somaliland are not officially recognized countries at the time this was made but they are big chunks of the map that were useful for the song so they made the cut.

n the fight against Ebola and Xenophobia, 180 African artists from seven African countries united and re-sang Michael Jackson's 'We are the World'.
While writing this article, someone suggested that maybe voc

Arafet Ben Marzou is a Tunisian environmental engineer and the founder of EXPLORALIS. He is an adventurer who has already crossed the Sahara Desert, traveled through many African countries, and crossed from Tunisia to China over a one year bicycle trip.
Arafet recently returned from a wonderful journey up the West Coast of united states, a voyage through the famous pacific cost, starting from Los Angeles ending in Seattle, three states, around 3000 km of exchange and adventure.
This experience was achieved by the use of an unconventional bicycle, a hybrid between a recumbent and a landyacht a special wind bike with high environmental value, the Whike.
Through the high mountains of California, the endless magnificent forest of Oregon and the blue lakes and large rivers of Washington, the road was just fantastic.
But also, far from the classic image found all over the media, the road was an interesting puch up to know about people, intention and the real American life.
A rich experience that aims to establish an understandable, new and attractive vector, on which we can communicate our universal values and develop respect and mutual communication

Google (GOOG) is charging up to launch its low price smart phone offering in 6 African countries. The Internet connected cell phone, named 'Hot 2' will be made by Infinix, which worked with Google on its low cost 'Android One' program that was rolled out in India last year. Google is working to push down the price of the smartphone devices in countries where a large percentage of the population don't have Internet connection. The new Infinix model will be able to run on Android software and will retail for around $87 in Nigerian stores and online in Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco and Ivory Coast. As part of its push to get more of Africa online, Google has also built a fiber optic network for faster internet in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

Rüschlikon is a village in Switzerland with a very low tax rate and very wealthy residents. But it receives more tax revenue than it can use. This is largely thanks to one resident - Ivan Glasenberg, CEO of Glencore, whose copper mines in Zambia are not generating a large bounty tax revenue for the Zambians. Zambia has the 3rd largest copper reserves in the world, but 60% of the population live on less than $1 a day and 80% are unemployed. Based on original research into public documents, the film describes the tax system employed by multinational companies in Africa.

As the turmoil of revolutions brought economic instability to many African countries, their citizens began to look across the sea, to Europe, for a chance to improve their lives. The Italian island of Lampedusa is often seen as “a gateway” to the EU paradise. Getting there, though, can be sheer hell. The journey is hard to arrange: it’s costly and travelers are at the mercy of boatmen, often unscrupulous traffickers. The waters are treacherous and have already claimed hundreds of lives. The authorities are determined to intercept would-be illegal immigrants before they can reach the EU border. Yet, in spite of all the hardship and danger, desperate African men and women continue to take their chances. Those who survive and reach the island for which they risked their lives, soon discover that, without papers or knowing the language, the future in a foreign country may be even more uncertain than in their own.
