Hey, lay low, you know That everybody has to care You see that we All feel the same way you do
Lie to me 'cause honestly I don't believe that you believe The lies you tried to feed to me Like keep your head down Happy isn't free
'Cause all the boys on the morning train can see And all the girls with the empty eyes agree All this working, it's not working They graduated with a big ten college degree They're frustrated because it's not how they thought it would be Sleeping, working, it's not working for me
So I stay in my seat Try to catch eyes with those around me But they all stare vacantly on forward So the future I can see
'Cause all the boys on the morning train can see And all the girls with the empty eyes agree All this working, it's not working They graduated with a big ten college degree They're frustrated because it's not how they thought it would be Sleeping, working, it's not working for me
How can I let this go Know only what I need to know Can I be only what they tell me I should show Oh no
I don't mind working I'd rather be on hills of sand
But then I would get thirsty to fill a need, I leave my friends
For always being the kind of man I try and love those kinds of hands
And hope tonight stick to my plan and never bleed for names I've ran
But if you tried to love a simple thing
Have you tried to love the simple thing
And try to grow
Sometime I get bigger
Been feeling this way
For ten thousand years
Pawned and put in papers
Creating all I fear
To keep
Working, aching, trying
Working, aching, trying
Go on now, take it slow
Take it fast if you know
Take it anyway that you can get it
Take it before you quit it
Tell the world
That you know someone
Who's the man on the moon
Tell the world
That you're looking for something more
It's always been easier on you
To keep
Working, aching, trying
Working, aching, trying
You say you want me to lead
I say you're wrong, my friend
Been working my fingers to the bone
And I can't bleed no more
To keep
Working, aching, trying
I been working all day for me mate on the site
Running around like a blue arsed fly
I been working
And I been working all day for me mate
Every bleeding minute I been on the go
Up and down the ladder like a fiddler's elbow
I been working
I been working all day for me mate
[Chorus]
Wait for tomorrow at half past ten
When I sign on, but until then
I'll be working
I'll be working all day for me mate
Aint' got no cards, don't pay no tax
For a score in me hand I'll be breaking me back
I been working
And I been working all day for me mate
Call me a crook, call me bent
But I need more than food and rent
I been working
And I been working all day for me mate
[Chorus]
They try to follow me every day
I give 'em the slip and I'm on my way
None of the other blokes thinks it's wrong
'Coz every one of 'em's signing on
[Chorus]
They try to follow me every day
I give 'em the slip and I'm on my way
None of the other blokes thinks it's wrong
'Coz every one of 'em's signing on
[Chorus]
The benefit boys are out of touch
What they don't know won't hurt 'em much
I been working
And I been working all day for me mate
If I'm caught I'll go down for a month or three
But they'll still Be paying out looking after me
I been working
And I been working all day for me mate
I know that we have not yet been perfected
And are missing parts of us that are required.
I know that we will never fully heal
And we will spend a lifetime in repair;
Just a mess of broken glass and shorted wires,
Our jealousy, impulses and fears.
And like everything that has been left unfinished,
We have made room for all our mistakes.
And if your course should change
I will not be compelled to follow you.
I'll keep you here inside among the things
That take up space and gather dust.
I will see in you the things I've always wanted,
The goals and things I never will achieve.
You will become more than just a constant.
You will be the guidelines and the light.
Rain or sun you are shining
Now that you have found a reason to move on.
But you may lean into me.
I'm not as frail as we used to be.
We're not as frail as we used to be.
I am a son, you are a daughter.
I am a son, you are a daughter.
A daughter.
(I am a son, you are a daughter.)
(I am a son, you are a daughter.)
I am a son, you are a daughter.
I am a son, you are a daughter.
I am a son, you are a daughter.
I am a son, you are a daughter.
A daughter.
