The posters of slain Syrian soldiers, put up by families to commemorate their sons killed in the fight against rebels, are plastered on walls throughout the coastal province of Tartous, forming impromptu murals of death that illustrate the price supporters of President Bashar Assad are paying to defend his rule. The men often pose with guns, with Assad's image some times imposed above the dead soldier. For government supporters, Assad is synonymous with Syria itself, particularly in Tartous, a homeland for Alawites, an offshoot of Islam, and the faith of Assad's family. For Syria's Alawite minority there is no way out, despite rumblings of dissent. Rebels often indiscriminately target Alawites; most seem to see them as apostates, and worse, they are synonymous with Assad's rule. "When we regain our country then we do not think of the price, but if we lose the country then our loss will be doubled, the loss of our kids and the loss of the country," said Ramadan Haidar, whose 23-year-old son Mahmoud was killed fighting in northern Syria. In terms of fighting to quell an armed rebellion who seek to topple Assad's rule, more soldiers have been killed from Tartous Province than any other region in Syria. Yet it's unlikely that the need for Tartous' sons will ease, with the government seemingly desperate for soldiers as the conflict grinds on. Some 4,000 soldiers from Tartous have been killed in the war, according to a Syrian official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorised to speak to media. The death toll forms some 10 per cent of the estimated 40,400 soldiers killed, even though Tartous' population is fewer than a million people, less than one-twentieth of Syria's pre-war population of 23 million. Alawites form some 13 per cent of the population throughout Syria, concentrated in the coastal provinces and the central city of Homs. Still, they are not the only ones to die in the fighting. Overwhelmingly, Syria's army represents the sectarian make up of the country: it is largely Sunni Muslim, fighting mostly Sunni Muslim rebels. The school teacher Haidar's son Mahmoud was killed two years ago during a suicide bomb attack. The family home in the town of Dweir Sheikh Saad is a memorial for the young man, strung with photos of Mahmoud in his army uniform; with his girlfriend; with his two sisters. Haidar's wife, Ibtisam, has saved her son's belongings, including red love-heart cushions his girlfriend gave him. She wears a necklace with a pendant of Mahmoud's face, often clutching it as she described her pride in her son for joining the Syrian army. "He was sacrificed for the homeland," she said smiling. "The homeland is precious and it needs very precious people to defend it," she added. The town, nestled amid olive groves, has lost 34 men so far, said mayor Saad Shaban. Reflecting a broader trend, Shaban said most of the men were killed in the past two years, mostly by the al-Qaida linked Nusra Front and in mass killings perpetrated by the extremist Islamic State group as they seized a string of military bases in the country's northeast. They included the killing of more than 150 captive government troops from the Tabqa base in Raqqa province in August. "We are fighting ignorance, retardation, infidelity and extremism," said Issa Mariam, whose son Abdullah was killed two years ago fighting in Aleppo. Posters of Abdullah, 25, adorned the walls of the house, alongside his framed death certificate. His mother also bore a gold pendant bearing Abdullah's image. So far, the government appears to be trying to mitigate potential dissent. But as the war grinds on, with no decisive winner and no political headway, Alawites will have no rest. It too, was full. The violence in Syria has reached unprecedented levels, the head of the UN observer mission said Thursday, insisting there must be a cease-fire in order for his teams to resume their work. Mood said the escalation of violence obstructed the mission's ability to "observe, verify, report as well as assist in local dialogue." Mood gave the bleak report the same day a UN team had to turn back after being unable to reach the town of Harasta, near Damascus. The monitors have been unable to carry out their mandate due to the increasing levels of violence, Mood said. About 300 UN monitors were sent to Syria to provide an unbiased look at the violence, but they have been largely confined to their hotels since 15 June because of the bloodshed. Mood said the violence was forcing the mission to restructure. "We have no ceasefire. So it is time to stop spreading ourselves out too thin and restructure in a way that will allow us, once we resume our activities, to conduct targeted tasks that require longer periods of stay in particular area as well as larger number of observers, specialised in a variety of civilian and military affairs," he said. He added that the mission had a "moral as well as political responsibility" to fulfil their mandate. "We cannot and we will not turn our eyes and ears away from your plight and will continue our work to find new paths to political dialogue and peaceful resolution to the crisis," Mood told reporters in Damascus. More than 14-thousand people have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March 2011, according to activists. As the conflict grinds on, the violence has become widespread and chaotic. Besides the government crackdown on dissent, rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray. Syria severely restricts the media in the country, making it difficult to gain a credible account of events on the ground.
