http://www.soas.ac.uk/linguistics/ This Linguistics seminar by Debbie Hill (University of Canberra) titled "Women, Bride-price and baskets: Cultural Salience and the organising principle of a semantic domain" was given at SOAS, University of London on 14 October 2014 More about this event http://bit.ly/1Hnltaq Studies of action verbs, including verbs cutting and breaking, eating and drinking, and carrying have shown that it is not uncommon for languages spoken in technologically simple societies to have a number of lexically specific verbs in a semantic domain that reflect the material culture and cultural practices of the community. What is less clear is whether there are organising principles underpinning these domains in each language and thus what lexically specific verbs in a semantic domain have to contribute to broader issues of lexical semantics. Longgu, an Oceanic language spoken by about 3000 speakers on the north-‐east coastal fringe of Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands) has about a dozen verbs that refer to ways in which humans carry children and things on their body. All verbs in this domain specify a part of the body involved in the action (e.g. the head, shoulders, back); some differ along other parameters (e.g. whether the carrier is female or male or either, whether the thing carried is human or not, whether the manner in which something is carried is specified). At the heart of Longgu culture is the bride-‐price feast, sungi, at which the pera basket, which is made for women to carry on their heads, is used to transfer shell money to the bride’s family from the groom’s family. There is a conceptual link between the heterosemous pair sungi ‘bride-‐price feast’ and sungi-a, ‘to carry on one’s head’. This presentation discusses the cultural salience of the semantic domain of ‘carrying’ in Longgu, and demonstrates the relationship between material culture (the pera basket), cultural practices (sungi ‘bride-‐price feast) and modes of carrying. The data suggest that an organizing principle, based on the cultural prominence of one verb (sungi-a) underpins the domain. Moreover, two verbs within the domain (sungi-a ‘carry something on the head’ and ango’inia ‘carry something on the shoulder’) select for the semantic gender of the carrier, demonstrating that the lexical semantics of these verbs reflect cultural practices in this domain.
Magical, Magnificent and out of this world. In this picturesque Indian Ocean island, the sea and the sun spin a magic web, attracting honeymooners and tourists in millions. And yes, the spirit and sounds of India are resonant all over this country. The intimate ties between India and Mauritius are reflected in the National Day of Mauritius on March 12, which celebrates the launch of the salt satyagraha by Mahatma Gandhi 85 years ago. This year, Mauritius will have a special guest on its National Day: India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This will be Mr Modi’s first trip to the strategically located island nation and will focus on a host of interlinked issues, including trade and investment, anti-piracy operations, maritime security and the joint development of blue economy. Mauritius’ importance in the new India government’s foreign policy was more than clear as Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam was the only non-SAARC leader to be invited for the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi in May 2014. Mr Modi’s maiden visit to the island nation will underscore close ties with Mauritius, where 68% of the 1.296 million people are people of Indian Origin. It all started on November 2, 1834 when the first batch of Indian labourers arrived in the island country to work on sugar plantations. Mauritius now celebrates November 2 every year as the ‘Apravasi divas.’ Over the years, India’s relations with Mauritius have diversified to include just about every area, with business bonding becoming stronger by the day. India is Mauritius’ largest trading partner. And Mauritius has been the single largest source of FDI into India. Development partnership is growing, with India extending several lines of credit to Mauritius for infrastructure, skills development and capacity building. Some prominent Indian-assisted projects in Mauritius include the Cyber Tower, the Swami Vivekananda International Conference Centre (SVICC), and Mahatma Gandhi Institute. Call it cultural alchemy, if you like. The Mahatma Gandhi Institute and the Rabindranath Tagore institute in Mauritius are beacons of Indian culture and deep spiritual connections between the two countries. India is the preferred destination for thousands of Mauritian students dreaming of better prospects in life. From Indian languages like Hindi and Bhojpuri to Hindustani Music, Kathak, Tabla and Yoga, Indians and Mauritians know how to speak, sing and dance together. With such organic cultural links and a convergence of strategic and business interests, the relations between India and Mauritius can only become stronger and deeper in days to come.

The Malayo-Polynesian languages are a subgroup of the Austronesian languages, with approximately 385.5 million speakers. The Malayo-Polynesian languages are spoken by the Austronesian people of the island nations of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean, with a smaller number in continental Asia. Malagasy is a geographic outlier, spoken in the island of Madagascar located off the eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Part of the language family shows a strong influence of Sanskrit and particularly Arabic as the Western part of the region has been a stronghold of Buddhism, Hinduism and since the 10th century, Islam. Two morphological characteristics of the Malayo-Polynesian languages is a system of affixation and the reduplication (repetition of all or part of a word, such as wiki-wiki) to form new words. Like other Austronesian languages they have small phonemic inventories; thus a text has few but frequent sounds. The majority also lack consonant clusters (e.g., [str] in English). Most also have only a small set of vowels, five being a common number. This video is targeted to blind users. Attribution: Article text available under CC-BY-SA Creative Commons image source in video

It's official, this year has been the warmest on record since 1880. The Earth's temperature registered 1.22 degrees Celsius more than the average of the 20th century. That is according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Glaciers in Norway have acted like a sort of thermometer: this year, out of 38 of them, 33 have receded. The Grafjell glacier has lost 120 metres in length since 2000. The approximately 450 Oceanic languages are a well-established family of Austronesian languages. The area occupied by speakers of these languages includes Polynesia as well as much of Melanesia and Micronesia.
Though covering a vast area, Oceanic languages are spoken by only two million people. The largest individual Oceanic languages are Eastern Fijian with over 600,000 speakers and Samoan with an estimated 370,000 speakers. Kiribati (Gilbertese), Tongan, Tahitian, Māori, Western Fijian and Kuanua (Tolai) each have over 100,000 speakers.
The common ancestor which is reconstructed for this group of languages is called Proto-Oceanic (abbr. POc).
The Oceanic languages were first shown to be a language family by Sidney Herbert Ray in 1896, and besides Malayo-Polynesian, they are the only large established family of Austronesian languages. Grammatically, they have been strongly influenced by the Papuan languages of northern New Guinea, but they retain a remarkably large amount of Austronesian vocabulary.
