People's Century - 1919: Lost Peace (Interwar Period / League of Nations)
Been binging on the documentaries lately, all of which will now be posted over here http://www.dailymotion.com/dai-flu Don't worry I'll get back to the music and stuff soon. Thought I'd post this one here what with everyone reliving WWI this year and all; I like the politics of war more than the battles themselves.
"The trauma of the First World War gives Europe no appetite for any further conflicts, but within the subsequent two decades the world would return to rearmament and militarism. The Paris Peace Conference introduced the concept of self-determination, leading to the establishment of Czechoslovakia, Poland and Yugoslavia from the former Central Powers. The League of Nations is established to assist in resolving international disputes in an open environment, but fails to receive strong support and is eventually proven impotent in preventing Italy's conquest of Ethiopia.
Despite a public push for disarmament, prompted by All Quiet on the Western Front and other reminders of the First World War, few countries make any serious moves. French and British demands for heavy war reparations lead to Germany's economic ruin, but this and other unforeseen consequences of the Treaty of Versailles would result in the emergence of Adolf Hitler. As Germany begins to absorb its neighbours, the rest of Europe mobilises, and the moral utility of pacifism is questioned.
The introductory scene shows Armistice Day. Interviewees include Lord Soper."

Based on his conclusions derived from the Bedford Level experiment, Rowbotham published a 16-page pamphlet, Zetetic Astronomy, which he later expanded into a 430-page book, Earth Not a Globe, in which the Earth is a flat disc centred at the North Pole and bounded along its southern edge by a wall of ice (Antarctica), with the Sun and Moon 3,000 miles (4,800 km) and the "cosmos" 3,100 miles (5,000 km) above Earth.[1] He also published a leaflet entitle

His words came as American jets patrolling the "no-fly" zone over southern Iraq attacked two surface-to-air missile installations.
U-S officials say the action came after the U-S planes encountered Iraqi MiGs flying in and out of the off-limits airspace.

At the end of the First World War, the Paris Peace Conference saw a battle over the future of empire. The victorious allied powers wanted to annex the Ottoman territories and German colonies they had occupied; Woodrow Wilson and a groundswell of anti-imperialist activism stood in their way. France, Belgium, Japan and the British dominions reluctantly agreed to an Anglo-American proposal to hold and administer those allied conquests under "mandate" from the new League of Nations. In the end, fourteen mandated territories were set up across the Middle East, Africa and the Pacific. Against all odds, these disparate and far-flung territories became the site and the vehicle of global transformation. In this masterful history of the mandates system, Susan Pedersen illuminates the role the League of Nations played in creating the modern world. Tracing the system from its creation in 1920 until its demise in 1939, Pedersen examines its workings from the realm of international diplomacy; the viewpoints of the League's experts and officials; and the arena of local struggles within the territories themselves. Featuring a cast of larger-than-life figures, including Lord Lugard, King Faisal, Chaim Weizmann and Ralph Bunche, the narrative sweeps across the globe-from windswept scrublands along the Orange River to famine-blighted hilltops in Rwanda to Damascus under French bombardment-but always returns to Switzerland and the sometimes vicious battles over ideas of civilization, independence, economic relations, and sovereignty in the Geneva headquarters. As Pedersen shows, although the architects and officials of the mandates system always sought to uphold imperial authority, colonial nationalists, German revisionists, African-American intellectuals and others were able to use the platform Geneva offered to challenge their claims. Amid this cacophony, imperial statesmen began exploring new means - client states, economic concessions - of securing Western hegemony. In the end, the mandate system helped to create the world in which we now live. A riveting work of global history, The Guardians enables us to look back at the League with new eyes, and in doing so, appreciate how complex, multivalent, and consequential this first great experiment in internationalism really was.

Flat-Earthers elect Norway's Trygve Lie as first GenSec of UN, the New League of Nations
Trygve Lie (born Lia, raised at the orphanage Hauges minde in Oslo) Elected Secretary UN 1940 1949 | Modern flat Earth hypotheses originated with the English writer Samuel Rowbotham (1816–1884). Based on his conclusions derived from the Bedford Level experiment, Rowbotham published a 16-page pamphlet, Zetetic Astronomy, which he later expanded into a 430-page book, Earth Not a Globe, in which the Earth is a flat disc centred at the North Pole and bounded along its southern edge by a wall of ice (Antarctica), with the Sun and Moon 3,000 miles (4,800 km) and the "cosmos" 3,100 miles (5,000 km) above Earth.[1] He also published a leaflet entitled "The inconsistency of Modern Astronomy and its Opposition to the Scriptures!!", which argued that the "Bible, alongside our senses, supported the idea that the earth was flat and immovable and this essential truth should not be set aside for a system based solely on human conjecture".[2]
Rowbotham and followers like William Carpenter, who continued the belief, gained attention by successful use of pseudoscience in public debates with leading scientists of the day. One such debate, involving Alfred Russel Wallace, concerned the Bedford Level experiment (and later led to several lawsuits for fraud and libel).[3][4][5] Rowbotham created a Zetetic Society in England and New York, shipping over a thousand copies of Zetetic Astronomy.[6]

Man on rostrum during the session of the United Nations conference reading a letter - natural sound. He reads the letter which recommends the appointment of Mr Trygve Lie as Secretary General of the United Nations Organisation. Various shots of the delegates voting. Man reads the countries and the representatives go and place their votes into box. Man reading the voting results, announcing that Mr Trygve Lie is elected as the Secretary General of UNO - another man repeats it in French.
Quite loud man speaking from rostrum - American delegate. He shouts, bangs his fist and then calms down a bit. He talks about money - presumably aid to undeveloped. Delegates applaud after his speech.

UN: ARAB LEAGUE OF NATIONS DISCUSS ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN LEADERS MEETING
Arabic/Eng/Nat
Foreign ministers from the Arab League of Nations have met to discuss the proposed meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
A senior Palestinian official accused Netanyahu of creating a state of war between Israel and the Palestinians and insisted on a specific agenda for the meeting.
The summit is due to begin on Tuesday.
The foreign ministers from the Arab League of Nations met at the United Nations in New York on Monday.
They are here to discuss the recent violence in the Middle East and the proposed meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Washington.
After the Arab League meeting, the Lebanese foreign minister said he was in favour of the summit, but urged Arafat to stand his ground.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We consider that the presence of Arafat at such a meeting with President Clinton to explore the problem, to give details about what's happening, is also very positive. But we don't think that any meeting between Arafat and Netanyahu will be really very positive unless it will be prepared before, unless Mr Arafat will be sure to have some guarantees concerning the resumption of talks, political talks, concerning Palestine."
SUPER CAPTION: M. Fares Bouez, Lebanese foreign minister
The Egyptian foreign minister said he hoped Israel would honour earlier agreements, including withdrawal from Hebron.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"Our position is known and we are clear. We hope that this summit will achieve practical results in order to push forward the peace process in real terms. And we hope the Israeli foreign minister will honour the earlier agreements, including the Israeli withdrawal from Hebron and other important Palestinian positions. We must not forget that the peace process has other parties involved, including Syria and Lebanon. We consider all these meetings critical and we hope to see the peace process move forward and avoid the degeneration caused by Israel's latest actions."
SUPER CAPTION: Amre Moussa, Egyptian foreign minister
A senior Palestinian official accused Netanyahu of creating a state of war between Israel and the Palestinians.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"The invitation by Clinton, who is the sponsor of the peace talks, is a positive step. Palestine insists on a specific agenda for these meetings. We do not just want to visit Washington and then go home without progress. The Israeli position is very stubborn and Netanyahu is carrying out a policy destructive to the peace process. This could be the beginning of the end because the siege by Netanyahu on the people of Palestine, with his tanks surrounding villages, is a state of war created by Israel. That means all international efforts have been destroyed."
SUPER CAPTION: Farouq Kadoumi, senior Palestinian official
The chairman of the Arab League of Nations spelt out the member's common position on the peace process.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The principle of peace versus land, and second, the relevant resolutions of the Security Council. I mean resolution 242, 338 and 425. So definitely there is today a common Arab position regarding the peace process in the Middle East."
SUPER CAPTION: Ahmed Attaf, Algerian foreign minister and chairman of the Arab League of Nations
The summit meeting is due to begin on Tuesday.

EGYPT: ARAB LEAGUE OF NATIONS MEETING (2)
Arabic/Eng/Nat
The Iraqi delegation abandoned the Arab League talks in Cairo on Sunday night, defeating one of the major aims of the conference - finding a common stance on the problem of UN sanctions and allied air strikes.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf stormed out of the meeting in anger after the Arab League's fell far short of Iraqi demands to strongly condemn the sanctions and last month's U-S - British airstrikes on the country.
The Arab League met in Cairo on Sunday, as the assembled Foreign Ministers tried to reach a consensus regarding sanctions against Iraq.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Amr Moussa, has said that overriding the sanctions should be an international decision, not just an Arab one.
Farouk el Shara, the Syrian Foreign Minister who is chairing this particular debate, asked the council to approve the call for sanctions to be withdrawn.
He said last month's U-S-led air raids on Iraq had been futile and he urged the assembled ministers to work for an end to U-N sanctions on Baghdad.
UPSOUND: (Arabic) Farouk el Shara, President of Session and Syrian Foreign Minister, asking council to approve the lifting of sanctions against Iraq, Libya and Sudan.
Diplomats say most Arab states want an end to the sanctions, which have hit Iraqis hard, but disagree on how to lift them.
The Arab states - which split into pro- and anti-Iraqi camps after the 1990 invasion of Kuwait - still remain divided over the issue.
The Palestinian delegate also commented on Saturday's sacking of Israeli Defence Minister Yitzhak Mordechai.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"It's an entirely internal matter. It just really shows how deeply the crisis is increasing within Israel about the peace process. I think, to us, it is not important who are the personalities involved. What is important is that we would like to see coming out of Israel a government that commits itself to the peace process, that commits itself to the agreements that have been signed and what happened yesterday I think is part of that internal Israeli dilemma. (Q Do you think there will be any resolution today regarding Iraq?) We certainly hope a resolution will be reached. I know there has been some narrowing of gaps in certain areas, people are working around the clock. It is really imperative that we reach a solution that protects the unity of the Arab world as well as one that protects the territorial integrity of Iraq, Kuwait and all the countries of the Arab gulf."
SUPER CAPTION: Nabeel Shaash, Palestinian Committee Council member
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We will be very pleased to lift the sanctions on the Iraqi people but that cannot happen by our hands or any Arab countries hands - just by the Security Council."
SUPER CAPTION: Sabahel Ahmed, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister
The final statement by the foreign ministers urged Iraq to acknowledge its mistake in invading Kuwait in 1990 - which brought on the U-N sanctions and the subsequent Gulf
War - and to stop provocative actions against its neighbors.

EGYPT/IRAQ: ARAB LEAGUE OF NATIONS MEETING
English/Nat
Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz has again denounced what he calls the continuing aggression against Iraq by the U-S and Britain.
Aziz urged a show of solidarity from the Middle East region at a meeting of foreign ministers at the Arab League of nations.
His words came as American jets patrolling the "no-fly" zone over southern Iraq attacked two surface-to-air missile installations.
U-S officials say the action came after the U-S planes encountered Iraqi MiGs flying in and out of the off-limits airspace.
Meanwhile, Iraq's foreign minister has denied his country is massing troops on borders with its Gulf neighbours.
Foreign Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf was in Cairo on Saturday - ahead of a meeting of Arab League foreign ministers, called to formulate a unified stand on Iraq.
Iraq appealed for Arab backing during the mid-December airstrikes.
But when no such support emerged, Iraqi officials began accusing some Arab states - notably Egypt, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia - of being U-S lackeys.
Sunday's Arab League meeting was originally scheduled soon after the airstrikes, but was postponed after Saudi lobbying against holding a hasty session.
The Saudis have put forth a proposal calling for an easing of sanctions - as long as there is continued monitoring to ensure that Iraq doesn't buy acquire new arms with which to threaten its neighbours.
But the usual divisions between Arab nations and Iraq make it likely the session will end with Iraq fuming and again accusing Arabs of dancing to America's tune.
In Cairo, the Iraqi foreign minister also dismissed reports his country had moved military hardware and troops into its south in recent weeks, apparently to quell rebellion in the south and to intimidate neighbouring Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"What is being reported on troop build-ups is a lie and has no basis and is part of a campaign to confuse international and public opinion. Even U-N observers between Iraq and Kuwait have denied it."
SUPER CAPTION: Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf, Iraqi Foreign Minister
In Baghdad, meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz urged Arab nations to show support for Iraq by lifting U-N sanctions imposed following the invasion of Kuwait.
He also called on them to condemn the U-S-British airstrikes against Iraq last month.
The strikes were aimed at punishing Baghdad's alleged refusal to cooperate with U-N disarmament experts responsible for eliminating Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
Aziz says a show of solidarity from the Arab League would be a reflection of the regional mood.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"They could reflect the genuine opinion, the genuine feeling of the Arab masses, of the Arab population, and at the same time show their genuine solidarity with Iraq. Any other deviation from these two main principals will be contrary to the feeling of the masses."
SUPER CAPTION: Tariq Aziz, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister
He denounced the United States for what he said was an attempt to quash Iraq's independence.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic with Spanish translation)
"Iraq is the only independent country of the oil producing Arab countries that is free from U-S influence. For this reason, they (America) want to crush Iraq and America wants to change its (Iraq's ) leadership."
SUPER CAPTION: Tariq Aziz, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister
Meetings of Arab foreign ministers often set up summits of Arab leaders, but no such result is expected on Sunday given the apparent divisions over Iraq.

PPSP 2015: Woodrow Wilson and the League of Nations
Interactive videoconferencing program presented by President Woodrow Wilson House - Washington, D.C., a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Presidential Primary Sources Project is a collaboration between the National Park Service, U.S. Presidential Libraries and Museums, other cultural and historic organizations, and the Internet2 community.
Program Description:
Woodrow Wilson and the League of Nations
Grades 9-12
Woodrow Wilson served as our 28th President from 1913 to 1921, a time of great challenges and changes regarding civil and human rights.
President Wilson received the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership in establishing the League of Nations at the end of World War I. The establishment of the League of Nations laid the foundation for the modern vision of global human rights. However, The League of Nations generated controversy. After a great national debate, ultimately the United States decided not to join the League. Only after World War II was the United States persuaded to join the United Nations, the successor to the League of Nations.
The Wilson era saw many other events that affected civil and human rights, including the growth of the American labor movement, the institutionalization of racial segregation, the “Great Migration" of agricultural workers from the South to Northern cities, the restriction of civil rights during WWI, and the assimilation of a large and varied immigrant population.
In his time, President Wilson framed many of the questions about civil and human rights that our nation continues to address today.
