PART 1
MELANESIA: THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!
Melanesia (the Black islands of the South Pacific) has been described as the eastern flank of the African world, an expression of ages past when an uninterrupted belt of Black people stretched across Africa, Eurasia, Australia, Oceanica and ancient America. In 1545 Spain made a claim on New Guinea, the largest and most populous island in Melanesia. Indeed, New Guinea is the largest island in the world after Greenland. It is tremendously wealthy in mineral resources, including uranium, copper cobalt, silver, gold, manganese, iron and oil. In 1545 Spain made a claim on the island and called it Nueva Guinea because of the striking resemblance between Melanesians and West Africans. Other Melanesian islands include New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, New Ireland and New Britain.
Split into two by colonial design, New Guinea has until recently contained a racially homogeneous population of five to six million Africoid people. The eastern half of the island became independent in 1975 under the name of Papua New Guinea. In a 1976 interview, Foreign Minister Ben Tanggahma of Papua New Guinea insisted that:
"Africa is our motherland. All of the Black populations which settled in Asia over the hundreds of thousands of years, came undoubtedly from the African continent. In fact, the entire world was populated from Africa. Hence, we the Blacks in Asia and the Pacific today descend from proto-African peoples. We were linked to Africa in the past. We are linked to Africa in the present. We will be linked to Africa in the future."
The western half of New Guinea, however, along with a significant portion of the island's total population, has been seized by Indonesia. Indonesians generally have a condescending view of Melanesians and consider them their racial inferiors. Under Indonesian rule since 1963, the Melanesians of New Guinea, known as Kanaks, want their island to become an independent country run by and for Melanesians. Their struggle continues.

Rebels holding more than 30 hostages in Fiji's parliament have accused the military of reneging on an earlier deal to end the crisis - raising doubts about the captives going free this weekend.
Coup leader George Speight told a news conference on Saturday that the release had been put back as the new martial law regime now insisted it would keep running Fiji after the hostage crisis ends.
He added this broke what he called an earlier promise to let Fiji's tribal chiefs decide on Monday whether the nation should be controlled by a military or civilian government.
The military has never publicly said it would let the chiefs resolve the crisis and a spokesman on Saturday said no such assurances had been made in the private negotiations, either.
After Speight seized control of Fiji's democratically elected government on May 19, the military eventually took charge, declaring martial law and throwing out a constitution that granted equal rights to the ethnic Indian minority.
Former Prime Minister Chaudhry, among those still held in the parliamentary complex, was the first ethnic Indian to serve as prime minister.
Speight said he wanted to prevent the ethnic Indians, who dominate many businesses, from running Fiji - reserving power for members of the indigenous Fijian majority.
About 600 people, many of them ethnic Fijians, attended a rally in the western part of Fiji on Saturday to express support for Chaudhry's democratically elected government and to condemn Speight.
David Momoeon, Minister for Labour, Industrial Relations and Immigration with Chaudhry's deposed government, addressed the meeting.
SOUNDBITE (English)
"They wish to see a military council preside over the affairs of Fiji and that military council will report to the head of state which will continue to be Commodore Bainimarama, in the first stage, which is anywhere from three to six months maximum, and then beyond into the interim government."
SUPER CAPTION: Rebel leader George Speight
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The head of state will continue to be the commander of the military, with his military council advising him. And as far as, from where we stand that's just completely unacceptable."
SUPER CAPTION: Rebel leader George Speight
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We don't see the necessity to retain executive authority as head of state in this country by the army, for them to continue with their normal processes of maintaining law and order. So we want that to be passed immediately over to the great council of chiefs and let them decide once and for all and get on with this thing so we can get on with it."
SUPER CAPTION: Rebel leader George Speight
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"But I'm quite happy to go back to the village after this, as I said. It's not a mandatory requirement that I be prime minister of that I take any role. I'm quite happy not to have a part of it. I'm just determined to make sure that we achieve what the objectives of the 19th of May coup was all about."
SUPER CAPTION: Rebel leader George Speight
SOUNDBITE: (English)

Rebels holding 27 people in Fiji's Parliament have raised a handmade flag in a show of defiance after the Fijian army said it would restrict access to the parliamentary compound.
The army is also offering an amnesty to any rebels who walk out of the compound before midnight on Friday.
Talks between the rebels and the government are believed to have started for the first time in the seven week hostage crisis in the presence of a United Nations official.
As the seventh week of the Fiji hostage crisis inside parliament drags on, there were possible signs of progress on Thursday.
A first round of talks between the rebels and the military is believed to be underway, according to the rebels' spokesman.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"There has always been informal communication between us and the military and this I imagine would be the first. It is still unofficial though but it could be significant in the sense that they've actually met face to face with their representatives. We're not too sure though in what capacity he is here. He's a member of the Security Council but whether he has a mandate or instructions from them I don't know."
SUPER CAPTION: Jo Nata, Rebel Spokesman
Just over half of the population in these South Pacific islands are indigenous to Fiji and many of them resent the economic and political clout of the Fijian Indians, who account for just under half of the population.
The Fijian Indians had dominated the government until it was overthrown on May 19 in a coup.
The military had said it would stop people from entering the Parliament complex at midnight on Wednesday.
One reason for the roughly two-square-kilometre military exclusion zone is to reduce the impact of the rebels' civilian backers which the Fijian army say are being used as human shields.
But enforcement of the "total exclusion zone" was lax, with supporters of rebel leader George Speight being allowed in on Thursday afternoon.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"They said they were going to stop people coming in and there's been an advertisement in the paper today that people will be stopped from coming in and out, but as you can see people are still coming in."
SUPER CAPTION: Jo Nata, Rebel Spokesman
Rebel leader George Speight has warned the hostages could be harmed if the military
stops the fairly free access or cuts off utilities.
Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who assumed power 10 days after the coup, has been reluctant to take strong action as long as no harm came to any of the hostages.
They include deposed Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, the first Fijian of Indian ancestry to lead the country.
Many in the military support the coup's stated objective of giving indigenous Fijians priority over ethnic Indians.
Indians have gained economic and political clout since being brought in by the colonialist British in the 19th century as indentured workers at lucrative sugar cane plantations.
But George Speight has scorned the installation of an all-Fijian government on Tuesday that promised to start the process of rewriting the 1997 multiracial constitution.
He still demanded his choice for prime minister and doubted the new Cabinet would be in power for long.
