Study circle: Fascism — What it is and how to fight it

Do the emergence of Reclaim Australia, the intensifying rants of anti-choice bigots and parliamentary support for the far-right World Congress of Families worry you? Does the rise of Golden Dawn in Greece and election of the fascist French National Front and the UK Independence Party to the European Parliament send shivers down your spine? Join us in discussion about why rightwing and neo-Nazi groups are growing internationally and how we can stop them.

Commences Wednesday 5 August and then every second Wednesday.

5 August: What is fascism?
19 August: Where Nazis find allies and why big business pays their bills
2 September: Fascist strategy: Crushing organised labour by demonising people of colour, immigrants, Muslims, Jews, First Nations, LGBTIQ, women, socialists and humanists
16 September: The role of the state in the rise of the stormtroopers
30 September: The Australian right: From the New Guard to Reclaim Australia
14 October: Hard-won lessons from anti-Nazi efforts across the globe
28 October: How to beat the ultra-right: Build the United Front!
11 November: Socialist democracy: The permanent solution to fascism

Join us for a healthy dinner, catering for varied diets, at 6:30 pm for a $8.50 donation. The discussion commences at 7:00 pm.

The study circle will be held at Solidarity Salon (address and travel information is above).

Fascism and Big Business, one of the key texts, is available for $35 from Solidarity Salon. Pre-reading for the first session is available by email on request.

Simshar – Movie night benefit for Solidarity Salon

You are invited to a special benefit movie screening of Simshar, a drama that draws upon true events in its exploration of the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean.

Eleven year old Theo sets off on his first expedition on the family fishing boat Simshar together with his father, grandfather and a Malian migrant worker. Disaster strikes when a fire breaks out on board, leaving the crew stranded in open water. Also in the Mediterranean, a Turkish vessel rescues African migrants between Malta and the Italian island of Lampedusa with tensions running high when neither country allows disembarkation.

On land, John, a soldier in the Maltese armed forces, is embroiled with the diplomatic deadlock whilst assisting with the search for the missing Simshar. However, he meets resistance from the fishing community which is being rallied by Theo’s mother Sharin and conducting their own search, in an attempt to shun the authorities who they fear will castigated the Simshar for illegal tuna fishing.

Simshar is Malta’s first official submission to the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars.

This screening, at Cinema Nova, Lygon Street, Carlton, is hosted by the Freedom Socialist Party to help sustain Solidarity Salon, an organising centre at 580 Sydney Road Brunswick. As well as being the office for the FSP, Solidarity Salon is also home base for Radical Women and the Indigenous Social Justice Association – Melbourne, houses a socialist feminist book store and hosts other community meetings and events.

Tickets are $20 each and must be booked and paid for by Sunday 4 October.
