A somatic (Greek: σὠμα/soma = body) or vegetal cell is any biological cell forming the body of an organism; that is, in a multicellular organism, any cell other than a gamete, germ cell, gametocyte or undifferentiated stem cell.
In contrast, gametes are cells that fuse during sexual reproduction, germ cells are cells that give rise to gametes, and stem cells are cells that can divide through mitosis and differentiate into diverse specialized cell types. For example, in mammals, somatic cells make up all the internal organs, skin, bones, blood and connective tissue, while mammalian germ cells give rise to spermatozoa and ova which fuse during fertilization to produce a cell called a zygote, which divides and differentiates into the cells of an embryo. There are approximately 220 types of somatic cells in the human body.
The word "somatic" is derived from the Greek word sōma, meaning "body".
As multicellularity evolved many times, sterile somatic cells did too. The evolution of an immortal germline producing specialized somatic cells involved the emergence of mortality, and can be viewed in its simplest version in volvocine algae. Those species with a separation between sterile somatic cells and a germ line are called Weismannists. However, Weismannist development is relatively rare (e.g., vertebrates, arthropods, Volvox), as great part of species have the capacity for somatic embryogenesis (e.g., land plants, most algae, many invertebrates).

Somatic cells are typical cells in the human body, such as hair cells, skin cells and eye cells. Discover how somatic cells differ from gametes with information from a science teacher in this free video on physiology and the human body. In this video Paul Andersen explains the difference between diploid and haploid cells. He starts with a brief description of the central dogma and how genes code for proteins. He then uses the phenotype of red hair to explain that humans are diploid creatures. He discriminates between diploid somatic cells and haploid sex cells. He finishes with a brief description of different life cycles dominated by haploid and diploid individuals. Expertsmind: zygote, fertilized egg cell that show from the union of a female gamete with a male gamete sperm. In the embryonic development of animals and humans, the zygote stage is concise and is followed by cleavage, when the single cell becomes subdivided into smaller cells. A germ cell is any biological cell that gives rise to the gametes of an organism that reproduces sexually. In various animals, the germs cells originate in the primitive migrate and streak via the gut of an embryo to the developing gonads. A somatic or vegetative cell is any biological cell forming the body of an organism; that is, in a multi cellular organism, any cell other than a gamete, germ cell, and gametocyte or undifferentiated stem cell.

Hybrids have been produced either between the different varieties of the same species (e.g. between non-flowering potato plants and flowering potato plants) or between two different species (e.g. between wheat triticum and rye secale to produce Triticale). Uses of somatic fusion include making potato plants resistant to potato leaf roll disease.[1] Through somatic fus...

Cells divide for many reasons. Cells divide so living things can grow. When organisms grow, it isn't because cells are getting larger. Organisms grow because cells are dividing to produce more and more cells. Depending on the type of cell, there are two ways cells divide—mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis is how somatic—or non-reproductive cells—divide. Somatic cells make up most of your body's tissues and organs, including skin, muscles, lungs, gut, and hair cells. Reproductive cells (like eggs) are not somatic cells. In meiosis a cell divides into two cells that have half the number of chromosomes. Reducing the number of chromosomes by half is important for sexual reproduction and provides for genetic diversity. This is intro 3D HD video of Mitotic cell division for middle and high school s...

Somatic embryos are formed from plant cells that are not normally involved in the development of embryos, i.e. ordinary plant tissue. No endosperm or seed coat is formed around a somatic embryo. Applications of this process include: clonal propagation of genetically uniform plant material; elimination of viruses; provision of source tissue for genetic transformation; generation of whole plants from single cells called protoplasts; development of synthetic seed technology. Cells derived from competent source tissue are ...
