The list of human tragedy grows day by day – people crushed by lorries, drowned on our shores and denied shelter at our borders. It is a damning charge against European leaders and their failure to provide safe routes for those fleeing war and persecution.

At emergency talks on 14 September, EU representatives once again dismally failed to address the refugee crisis. Some proposals for collective action have been deferred to a meeting in October. We must keep up the pressure for real action to achieve a humane, comprehensive and effective response to end the suffering of thousands.
