This documentary explores the traditions of the Kogi people and the wisdom they have learnt in their peaceful existence with the land they inhabit.
You can visit actual Kogi villages during the hike to La Ciudad Perdida (the Lost City), the ancient city of Teyuna in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain.

Twenty years ago Alan Ereira’s influential television film From The Heart of the World: The Elder Brothers’ Warning brought global attention to the Kogi people of Colombia, a remote and ancient South American civilization determined to caution us about environmental damage to the earth. A true ‘lost civilization’ who regard themselves as the guardians of the earth, the Kogi once traded with the Mayans and Aztecs but survived the Spanish conquests by retreating into their isolated mountain massif, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Having remained hidden for centuries, the Kogi surfaced in Ereira’s original 1990 film with an environmental message that was ahead of its time, a warning about how we, their ‘younger brother’, were destroying the ecosystem by plundering the earth’s natural resources. But, despite this warning, the Kogi have continued to see destructive changes to their homeland as highways and power plants continue to spring up, with glacial melt, ferocious storms, landslides, floods, droughts and deforestation continuing to take their toll. Now, two decades later and convinced that their message has gone unheeded, the next generation of Kogi are reaching out to the world once more with a much more specific warning about the future of the planet. Filmed over three years, this ambitious feature-length documentary project initiated by the Kogi, with footage filmed by them, is the authentic voice of an indigenous people.

ALUNA is made by and with the KOGI, a genuine lost civilization hidden on an isolated triangular pyramid mountain in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia, nearly five miles high, on the Colombian-Caribbean coast. The Kogi say that without thought, nothing could exist. This is a problem, because we are not just plundering the world, we are dumbing it down, destroying both the physical structure and the thought underpinning existence. The Kogi believe that they live in order to care for the world and keep its natural order functioning, but they recognized some years ago that this task was being made impossible by our mining and deforestation. In 1990 they emerged to work with Alan Ereira, making a 90-minute film for BBC1 in which they dramatically warned of our need to change course. Then they withdrew again…
The first film had a stunning global impact, and is now probably the most celebrated film ever made about a tribal people. It was repeated on BBC2 immediately after its first showing, and then in many other countries – some 30 times in the US last year, not bad for a 20-year-old documentary!

#VOFF is an international online event that attracts, displays and rewards short films, features, series, web series and documentaries that are not always as famous as they should be. It’s a community moderated festival—taking place four times a year—where the public audience will create a shortlist. The winners are then picked by a Jury of Experts, currently represented by Ted Hope, Timo Vuorensola and Nora Tschirner.
