''Rebels'' supported by Turkey fought Kurdish-backed forces in northern Syria on Saturday, as Ankara ratcheted up its cross-border offensive by saying it had launched air strikes against both Kurdish forces and Islamic State. Turkey's government, which is fighting a Kurdish insurgency at home, has said the Syrian campaign it opened this week is as much about preventing Kurdish militia fighters from gaining territory in Syria as about pushing back Islamic State. Turkey wants to stop Kurdish forces gaining control of a continuous stretch of Syrian territory on its frontier, which it fears could embolden the Kurdish militant group PKK, which has waged a three-decade insurgency on Turkish soil. Turkish security sources said two F-16 jets bombed a site controlled by the Kurdish YPG militia, ...

Sept. 23 -- Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaks about his frustrations with the delay in Fethullah Gulen’s extradition, culpability of a recent deadly attack on a humanitarian aid convoy in Syria and worries of a U.S. partnership with Kurdish forces in the fight against Islamic State. Erdogan sat down with Bloomberg News Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait in New York City.
Turkey has a long history of conflict with the Kurdish people whose historic homeland is spread over what is now Turkey, Syria and Iran. For many year, Kurds from the country’s South-East have campaigned for autonomy within the Turkish state. The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has been fighting for independence and because it’s considered a terrorist group, is outlawed in Turkey. Until recently, a ceasefire had been in effect between the government and the PKK; that has now ended. Since then the conflict has escalated and hundreds have been killed. The local Kurdish population claims that Erdogan’s government is conducting an operation against their people. Civilians continue to die and the Turkish police enjoy unchecked authority. They insist that the widespread murder of Kurds is systemat...
Just a few months ago, Turkish Kurds had hope for a political solution to their ongoing disagreements with the government. They had won seats in parliament and later this week, the pro-Kurdish party the HDP was to meet with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. That meeting was then cancelled. The ongoing operations against Kurdish rebels leaves no sign of a likely return to what many have described as a peace process. The political engagement has turned into a military one. Why the about-face? And will the Turkish government and the Kurds ever find a way to interact without violence? FRANCE 24 brings you a rare look inside the PKK, the Kurdistan Workers' Party, in the midst of fighting a guerrilla war against the Turkish army and the Islamic State group. Some, such as the United States and the European Union, see them as terrorists, others as saviours. PKK fighters are waging a war on two fronts, between Turkey and Iraq. FRANCE 24 was able to meet several members of the group in their stronghold of the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq. For the past three decades, the PKK, Turkey's Kurdish guerrilla, has been at war with the Turkish regime, currently ruled by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. After a three-year truce, the conflict flared up again in the summer of 2015, when the Turkish army launched an intensive bombing campaign against PKK targets. More recently, the PK...
