What is the future for the Labour Party? My expectations for the Labour leadership contest were rock bottom, and I've still managed to end up disappointed. Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall are all flinging around vacuous buzzwords like "aspiration", words that mean nothing to most people, instead of providing a credible alternative to Tory austerity. So... what's the point in the Labour party now?

A Parting Hymn: Lies, deceit and the death of the Labour Party
'A Parting Hymn' is in some respects a tribute to the political party that was once a voice for the poor and the working classes, the embodiment of fairness and solidarity. On the other, it recognises the very real death of the Labour party, whilst unashamedly making the case for Socialism (however lonely a voice that might be in a post Thatcher/Blair era).
Labour's core supporters along with the party's deepest held principles have long since been sold down the river - and this film will explain just how the electorate have been deceived, used and ignored in the interests of power, and the holding of office at almost ANY cost.

What's the point in the Labour party now? | Owen Jones talks
Since I published this, Jeremy Corbyn has joined the race. Here are my thoughts: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/04/jeremy-corbyn-vital-labour-leadership-debate

RIP Bob Crow on immigration "Labour party betrayed working people" BBC Question Time (07Mar13)
Find me any union leader in Britain today as articulate as this man. Impossible!
At 10:25am, 15 mins or so after Bob's death was announced, BBC Radio 5 Live's political correspondent Chris Mason said Bob Crow was 'always winding up politicians'. How disrespectful, trades unions have 15 times more members and are far more democratic than political parties in UK Mr Mason. http://politicsthisweek.wordpress.com/2013/05/17/friday-drivetime-122/
Then the BBC played an amateurish barely audible interview with Bob Crow criticising him for his high salary played yesterday on BBC Radio 4's The World At One.
Longer and much more recent Bob Crow speech - even more wonderful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfAIR0q4hSQ
Bob Crow Demands New 'Working-Class' Labour Party, Urges Unions To Break Ties With Miliband
The Huffington Post UK | Posted: 13/07/2013 13:48 BST
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/07/13/bob-crow-labour-party_n_3591038.html
Firebrand trade union boss Bob Crow will seek to exploit Labour wranglings with unions by urging the movement to break ties with Ed Miliband and create a party that "speaks for working people".
Amidst the marching bands, bunting and banners of the annual Durham Miners Gala, the RMT general secretary accused the Labour leader of showing unions contempt and "dancing to the tune of Tony Blair" following plans to end the automatic affiliation of union members to the party.
Although the transport union was expelled from the party in 2004 for allowing Scottish branches to affiliate to other political parties, Crow claimed the shake-up announced earlier this week was an attempt to "hack away at the last remaining shreds of influence held by those who created the party".
At the Gala, he will attempt to rally support for a "new party of labour" to take on the "anti-worker" agenda of the three main Westminster political parties.
Last year Miliband became the first Labour leader in more than two decades to address the gala, also known as The Big Meeting, but will not attend this year.
How Much Will Ed Miliband's 'Mend-Not-End' Plan on the Trade Union Link Cost Labour?
Speaking ahead of the event, Crow said: "Over the past week we have seen Ed Miliband dancing to the tune of Tony Blair and the rest of the New Labour conspirators as he seeks to hack away at the last remaining shreds of influence held by those who created the party that he leads, the trade unions.
"If others want to stick around and be insulted by those whose only interest is our money and not our ideas then that's a matter for them, for the rest, there is a whole world of opportunity outside the constraints of the Labour Party and RMT would urge them to embrace it and join us in this new political project.
"RMT was expelled from the Labour Party almost a decade ago and in that time we have actually increased our political influence as we have had the freedom to back candidates and parties who demonstrate clear support for this trade union and its policies.
"If others now join us after the contempt that they have been shown by Ed Miliband then together we have a world to win. This is a moment of huge opportunity for all those sick and tired of Labour's embrace of pro-business, pro-EU, neo-liberal policies and we should seize it with both hands.
"While this rotten ConDem Government seeks to impose punitive charges on anyone seeking justice at the employment tribunal from this summer the Labour Party have said nothing. The whole programme of Labour now is to try and sneak into government by default on the basis of a manifesto that could trade under the title 'carry on cutting'. Our job is not to prop up the political class behind this racket, our job is to sweep it away.
"With the latest assault by Labour on the unions the time is right to start building an alternative political party that speaks for the working people and the working class communities that find themselves under the most brutal attack from cuts and austerity in a generation.
"Clinging to the wreckage of a Labour Party that didn't lift a finger to repeal the anti-union laws despite 13 years in power is a complete waste of time. The time for the alternative party of labour is now."
Miliband launched plans for significant reform of the Labour Party's relations with the trade unions earlier this week - a move Blair hailed as ''a real act of leadership''.

That changes when a young Irish woman approaches him about a story of her mother, Philomena, who had her son taken away when she was a teenage inmate of a Catholic convent. http://bit.ly/1JOSAEf
Martin arranges a magazine assignment about her search for him that eventually leads to America. Along the way, Martin and Philomena discover as much about each other as about her son's fate. Furthermore, both find their basic beliefs challenged.

John Kerry on Corbyn and Trump: 'people are angry, I understand that'
There are these insurgent movements in your country, indeed in Western democracies generally – you see it with Bernie Sanders, you see it with Mr Trump…and here the Labour party has just elected Jeremy Corbyn…are you worried?”
That was Jon Snow’s question to the US Secretary of State John Kerry, who told Channel 4 News that there was a “general dissatisfaction on a global basis.”
“People are angry, they are frustrated – and I understand that frustration,” he added.

#HandsOffBernie - Clinton Smears Bernie in False Attack
#HandsOffBernie #FeeltheBern #UniteBlue
WASHINGTON -- A super PAC backing Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is going negative, circulating an email that yokes her chief rival Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to some of the more controversial remarks made by Jeremy Corbyn, the United Kingdom's new Labour Party leader, including his praise for the late Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan leader who provided discounted fuel to Vermont in a deal supported by Sanders.
Clinton's camp has long said it has no plans to attack Sanders. But the super PAC, called Correct the Record, departed from its defense of Clinton's record as a former secretary of state in an email Monday that compares Sanders with Corbyn. Correct the Record, led by Clinton ally David Brock, also has sent trackers after Sanders and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley.
The Democratic candidates have refrained from criticizing each other directly. Sanders has obliquely knocked Clinton for not stating her position on the Keystone XL pipeline, and hasn't made an issue of her use of a private email server and account while at the State Department. Clinton, in turn, almost never mentions Sanders' name and has focused on her Republican rivals.
Monday's Correct the Record email strays from that pattern. The email, sent to a Huffington Post reporter in response to an article about Corbyn and Sanders without any agreement that it would be off the record, was meant to flag Corbyn's "most extreme comments." Among those was the suggestion that the assassination of Osama bin Laden was "a tragedy," since there was no attempt to arrest the former al Qaeda leader and put him on trial. The email also cites Corbyn's comment that he'd invite his "friends" from Hezbollah to come to the U.K. to discuss peace in the Middle East and an editorial in which he said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's "attempt to encircle Russia is one of the big threats of our time."
The email uses those comments to pivot to "similarities" between Corbyn and Sanders, who have engaged in a mild cross-Atlantic love-fest of late, given that they are both insurgent populists challenging their political parties' establishments. Corbyn has said he is following Sanders' campaign "with great interest," and Sanders said he was "delighted" that the Labour Party elected Corbyn as its leader.
The "similarities" between the two, according to the email, include Sanders' introduction of legislation to terminate the United States' nuclear weapons program, comments that NATO's expansion into former Soviet states is dangerous because it could provoke Russia, opposition to more U.S. funds for NATO, and saying he "was concerned" that proposed new NATO members had shipped arms to Iran and North Korea.
The more serious stretch comes as the email highlights how Sanders helped negotiate a program with Venezuela's national oil company in 2006 that provided discounted heating oil assistance to low-income Vermonters. The senator said it was "not a partisan issue," in the state, which was the sixth to make the deal. His support for the program was apparently enough to merit a mention, since Corbyn has written that the late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez's "electoral democratic credentials are beyond reproach."
Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs wrote in an email to The Huffington Post that Correct the Record was "distorting the record." The Sanders campaign has argued that attacks from Clinton supporters are inspired by anxiety over his leads in polls of Democratic voters in Iowa and New Hampshire.
"It is disappointing that Secretary Clinton's super PAC is spreading disinformation about Bernie," Briggs wrote. "This is exactly the kind of politics that Bernie is trying to change. To equate bringing home heating oil to low-income Vermonters with support for the Chavez government is dishonest."
Only a handful Clinton surrogates have attacked Sanders directly, and it remains to be seen whether the gist of the email from Correct the Record will be fed to anyone other than reporters. If so, the attack would be in the vein of what Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said about Sanders earlier this year -- that he's unelectable, since he's a self-identified democratic socialist.

Jeremy Corbyn has set out Labour's position on the EU, saying he wants the UK to remain a member but would try to reverse any "damaging changes" negotiated by David Cameron.
He criticised the EU over free trade, agriculture and Greece but backed its financial transactions tax that the Conservative government has opposed.
Mr Corbyn was under growing pressure from MPs to clarify his position.
It comes after he told the BBC his EU policy was "developing".
In other developments:
Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron claimed he had received "unsolicited texts" from well-known Labour figures "distressed" about the direction the party was taking
Labour donor Assem Allam told The Times he would support Labour MPs who want to break away from the party
Mr Corbyn appointed former union communications officer Kevin Slocombe as his press spokesman
Since being elected on Saturday, Mr Corbyn's position on the EU has come under increased scrutiny.
During the campaign he said he had "mixed feelings" on the union and suggested there were circumstances in which he would advocate a vote to leave.
He has also insisted Mr Cameron should not be given a "blank cheque" in negotiations about the UK's EU membership ahead of a future in-out referendum.
'Damaging changes'
Shadow justice secretary Lord Falconer said he would quit if Mr Corbyn called for a UK exit.
On Thursday, Mr Corbyn, who told the BBC that Labour would not campaign to leave, wrote to the party's MPs confirming that it would be campaigning to stay in.
This led shadow Europe minister Pat McFadden to agree to stay in his role.
Mr Corbyn set out his policy in a Financial Times article, warning Mr Cameron against trying to "weaken workers' rights" as part of his renegotiations.
"Our shadow cabinet is also clear that the answer to any damaging changes that Mr Cameron brings back from his renegotiation is not to leave the EU but to pledge to reverse those changes with a Labour government elected in 2020," he said.
He criticised the planned trade deal with the United States, called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, and said many people were "appalled" at the EU's treatment of Greece.
And he said he would work with other EU nations to bring in a financial transactions tax, which is the subject of a legal challenge from the UK government over fears it would damage the City of London.
"Labour is clear that we should remain in the EU. But we too want to see reform," he wrote in the Financial Times.
He added: "If Mr Cameron fails to deliver a good package or one that reduces the social gains we have previously won in Europe, he needs to understand that Labour will renegotiate to restore our rights and promote a socially progressive Europe."

New deal Welsh magician creates Jeremy Corbyn card trick
Audio Newspaper
Welsh magician Jeremy Went has created a card trick to explain the political trajectory of the newly-elected Labour Party leader.
In the course of his trick, which he concocted and filmed in the space of an hour, Went covers Corbyn’s surprise ascent to Labour’s top job.
He covers issues of transparency, popularity, public mistrust in politician’s tendency to fail on their pledges and more besides.
The video has clocked up 18,000 views in just two days, with Went, who maintains he is a magician not a politician, telling the Daily Mirror newspaper he “almost didn’t post it because it’s controversial, but the reception has been brilliant.”“Everyone has really enjoyed it and taken it as intended – very tongue-in-cheek,” he said.
He uses the video to explain why red, the traditional color of Labour, is better than Tory blue.
“I’m not suggesting that Cameron is at all evil,” he said in the short video. “I wouldn’t suggest that. What I am saying is he spends far too long hanging round with jokers who fail to make true on any of their guarantees.”
“Most magic tricks can be quite dated. They’re not topical. I thought it would be interesting to do a new take on card trick with everything going on tied in quite well,” Went said.
“That’s one continuous shot,” he said, explaining his approach.
“I try to make things interesting as I can. That’s the main thing, use the trick as a vehicle to talk about things like [politics] rather than the trick for the trick’s sake.”
“That’s what makes a good magician,” he added.

Alistair Darling: I don't know what Jeremy Corbyn stands for
Former Labour chancellor Alistair Darling has said he is struggling to "see a silver lining" in Jeremy Corbyn's election as Labour leader.
Mr Corbyn would find it hard to "get off the ground" unless he set out very clearly where he stood on key issues.
"So far this week I do not know where he is going, what he stands for," he told Radio 4's Today.
Asked whether he could see shadow chancellor John McDonnell in the Treasury, he said it was "difficult".
The Labour leader has had a difficult first week in the job, being criticised for the lack of women in the most senior shadow cabinet positions, his decision not to sing the national anthem at a Battle of Britain service and confusion over his stance on the EU referendum.
Mr Darling acknowledged that Mr Corbyn - who was elected with nearly 60% of the vote last Saturday - had a "huge mandate".
'First impressions'
He said Mr Corbyn had benefited from and "capitalised on" the public mistrust of the political establishment and their yearning for something new.
However, he said "first impressions" of a new leader were decisive and although Mr Corbyn had made it clear "what he is against, I am not sure what he is for".
Unless Mr Corbyn defined himself and spelt out where he stood on key issues, such as the economy and Europe, others would do it for him and "he will never get off the ground".
"I didn't vote for him but he's there," he told Today. "I've have been a member of the Labour Party for 40 years and, like all of us, we will do our best.
"He is the leader but so far this week I am bound to say I just do not know where he is going, what he stands for.
"Frankly in the next couple of days he needs to set out with greater clarity what he exactly wants to achieve and how we are going to do it. He has not done that yet....
"If he really says he can really make a difference, he really does need to say how he is going make a difference. As an ordinary party member, I haven't seen that yet."
McDonnell apology
Mr Darling, who was chancellor between 2007 and 2010, stood down as an MP in May and has been nominated for a peerage.
Asked whether he could envisage Mr McDonnell - whose appointment has been questioned by some MPs - as chancellor, Mr Darling said "just at the moment it seems to me to be difficult but I am willing to be surprised".
Tax stance
Mr Corbyn has sought to reassure Labour MPs about his views on Europe, having declined in the days after his election to rule out campaigning for the UK to leave the European Union.
He issued a joint statement with shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn saying that Labour, under his leadership, would back the "In" campaign in a referendum due by the end of 2017.
Mr McDonnell has also indicated he would back a return of the 50p income tax rate - a policy that Ed Miliband advocated at the last election.
In the past, Mr McDonnell and Mr Corbyn have called for the top rate of tax to rise to 60p - a figure not seen since 1988 - but Mr McDonnell suggested he would settle for a more modest increase.
"It's an issue for us," he told Question Time.
"The Tories reduced it from 50p to 45p and we'd just like to go back to 50p. We think that's reasonable but that will be a debate within the Labour Party and we will come back with our concrete proposals on that."

UK's Corbyn says he can't imagine campaigning for 'Brexit'
Britain's newly elected opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has said he cannot imagine his Labour Party campaigning to leave the European Union at an upcoming referendum, easing fears that he would force the party to adopt a eurosceptic position.
Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron is seeking to renegotiate the terms of Britain's EU membership and plans to hold a referendum by the end of 2017 on whether to remain in or leave.
Since Corbyn won an election to lead Labour on Sept. 12, his party has sent mixed messages on how it would campaign in the referendum, with senior figures adopting seemingly conflicting positions.
Despite a heavy election defeat in May, Labour remains influential in northern England and Wales and could be key to deciding whether Britons vote to remain inside the bloc.
Asked in a BBC interview whether he could imagine a situation where Labour was campaigning to leave the EU, Corbyn said: "No, I don't see that position."
"What I was opposed to, and I remain opposed to, is the idea that David Cameron could go around Europe and give up workers' rights, and give up environmental protection, give up a whole load of things that are very important," he said.
A survey by the pollster ICM on Tuesday showed that 43 percent of voters favoured staying in, 40 percent would opt to leave, and 17 percent were undecided.
Corbyn said he wants to see Europe pursuing a more social agenda rather than becoming a free-market haven. That position potentially puts him at odds with the reforms Cameron is seeking, which include restricting migrants' access to benefits and reducing barriers to trade in the single EU market.
Corbyn said that if he didn't like the reforms Cameron won he would oppose them and campaign to stay in the bloc in order to change those policies.
"That would be a manifesto commitment up to 2020," he said, referring to the next scheduled national election.

When former journalist Martin Sixsmith is dismissed from the Labour Party in disgrace, he is at a loss as to what do. http://bit.ly/1JOSAEf
That changes when a young Irish woman approaches him about a story of her mother, Philomena, who had her son taken away when she was a teenage inmate of a Catholic convent. Martin arranges a magazine assignment about her search for him that eventually leads to America. Along the way, Martin and Philomena discover as much about each other as about her son's fate. Furthermore, both find their basic beliefs challenged.

As the race to become the next leader of the Labour party nears the finish line, we bring the contenders together to ask why they should lead the party's efforts to rebuild after a crushing election defeat in May.
Subscribe to Guardian Membership ► http://bit.ly/subgdnmembers
As a Guardian member, you will be able to grill the leadership hopefuls alongside Guardian columnists John Harris, Anne Perkins and Rafael Behr.
In an evening hosted by Hugh Muir, we'll be asking Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper, Liz Kendall and Jeremy Corbyn to give their vision for Labour's future: What should the party stand for? How can it appeal to both disadvantaged and middle class voters? Can it ever recover in Scotland? And does the path back to victory lead left or right?

Martin Freeman explains how this election is a choice between two completely different sets of values. Labour believes in community, compassion and fairness. That’s why we will build an economy that works for everyone. The Tories have cut taxes for millionaires and only work for people at the top. A Labour government led by Ed Miliband will protect the NHS, create opportunities for young people, raise the minimum wage and ban exploitative zero-hours contracts.

Since I published this, Jeremy Corbyn has joined the race. Here are my thoughts: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/04/jeremy-corbyn-vital-labour-leadership-debate

Breaking Gulf News from UAE -
LONDON: Britain’s newly elected opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has said he cannot imagine his Labour Party campaigning to leave the European Union at an upcoming referendum, easing fears that he would force the party to adopt a Euro-sceptic position.
Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron is seeking to renegotiate the terms of Britain’s EU membership and plans to hold a referendum by the end of 2017 on whether to remain in or leave.
Since Corbyn won an election to lead Labour on Saturday, his party has sent mixed messages on how it would campaign in the referendum, with senior figures adopting seemingly conflicting positions.
