I took a little walking tour in North London around the Highgate postcode: N6, around Highgate village and the surrounding area and made this video for anyone interested in the area.
This tour briefly shows the following areas and things:
- Highgate tube / underground station
- Jacksons Lane theatre and arts centre building (on Jackson's Lane, as viewed from Archway Road)
- Poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge ("the sage of Highgate")'s house, at number 3 The Grove, Highgate, which was also the residence of LB Priestley.
- The Flask pub, where poets like Lord Byron, Shelley and Keats are said to have visited when they came by to see their fellow literary friend, Coleridge
- Highgate village centre
- Highgate school (where TS Eliot taught French and Latin)
- The picturesque Gatehouse Inn where Charles Dickens and Lord Byron are said to have visited for a drink.
- Pond Square (which no longer contains any ponds)
- Highgate's URC church
- Highgate High Street (featuring local shops and pubs like The Highgate Pantry, Grazyna, The Village Jewller, The Prince of Wales pub, Oxfam, BBC3 hairdressers, The Angel Inn, Limone, Face it and The Highgate Bookshop)
- Some classic red double decker London Buses
- Waterlow Park (featuring its tennis courts, wild blackberries, its 3 ponds: lower, middle and upper pond, its duck, pigeon and turtle residents, dog visitors, its playground, its Kitchen garden compelte with beautiful display of sunflowers and lots of veggies and flowers in the vegetable patch, Lauderdale House and its gardens including a little fountain)
- Saint / St Joseph's RC Church
- Highgate cemetery (shown here only very briefly - there are videos on youtube that concentrate and specialize on Highgate cemetery tours. This place is famous for its celebrity graves. Highgate cemetery burials of celebrities include: Karl Marx, Michael Faraday, Douglas Adams, George Eliot, Jacob Bronowski, Sir Ralph Richardson and Christina Rossetti.)
- Views over London from up on Highgate Hill (like in the famous "London song" by The Kinks.) The views shown are looking eastwards towards Crouch End and also looking Southwards from near Holly Lodge Estate, down towards central London, like in the song by Ray Davies where the lyrics are: "If you're ever up on Highgate Hill on a clear day, You can see right down to Leicester Square". So if you ever heard that song and wondered "where is Highgate hill?" this video shows you a bit of it and the surrounding area. In this video I'm not sure if you can quite make out Leicester Sq, but you can see the London Eye, the BT tower and a few other bits from the London skyline.

_______________
Many popular books on ghosts, like the book called The Highgate Vampire, mention a vampire which reportedly haunted Highgate Cemetery in the early 1970s. The growth of its reputation, which can be traced through contemporary media reports and subsequent books by two participants, Seán Manchester and David Farrant, is an example of modern legend-building. The most academic account is given by a folklore scholar, Professor Bill Ellis, in the journal Folklore. He writes from the viewpoint of sociological legend study; this concerns public perceptions of a real or purported event, and how these are shaped into a narrative by processes of rumour, selection, exaggeration and stereotyping. Other narratives which treat these purported happenings as fact are available in the books and websites of Seán Manchester and David Farrant.

There’s nowhere in the world quite like London. This isn’t just another capital city, it’s a thriving metropolis with a unique personality formed by its iconic landmarks, centuries of history, world-class shopping and achingly cool fashion, arts and food scenes.
London’s food scene has given British food a new reputation - gone is the stereotype of stodgy, overcooked food, and in its place are award-winning chefs serving fresh British produce that draw in food lovers from all over the world. The city is home to 60 Michelin starred restaurants, but it’s the fantastic street food and short-term pop-up restaurants springing up all over the city with barely any notice that Londoners can’t get enough of.
You can’t go far in London without stumbling across one of the city’s iconic attractions. A 40-minute walk along the South Bank will take you past Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament , the London Eye , Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe , St Paul’s Cathedral and Tower Bridge . There are also eight Royal Parks to explore, and over 300 museums and galleries, many offering free admission.
Whatever your taste in art, you’ll find it in London. For the classics, head to the National Gallery , National Portrait Gallery or Tate Britain . If you like your art with an edge, you’ll love Tate Modern , where you’ll find the likes of Damien Hirst, Rothko and Hockney. Prefer your art out of a can? You’ll find some of Britain’s best street art (and artists) in the Leake Street Tunnel in Waterloo, as well as the streets of Shoreditch in East London. As for theatre , look no further than London’s legendary West End boasting over 40 world-class theatres.
When the sun sets on London the city comes alive, and believe us when we say there’s something for everyone here - from the high-end nightclubs of Chelsea and Mayfair to cool clubs like Fabric and the warehouse raves of Dalston. Or perhaps you’d like to explore the live music scene? Head to East London’s Cargo, Soho’s Ronnie Scott’s or Bar Fly, Proud or Jazz Cafe in Camden - on any given night you’ll find everything from rock and hip hop to jazz..
London is the perfect playground for kids of all ages. Don’t miss the Science Museum , Natural History Museum and Horniman Museum , where they’ll have so much hands-on fun they’ll forget they’re learning. Animal lovers will love getting up close to the creatures at London Zoo and the London Wetlands Centre and Battersea Park Children’s Zoo, and if there’s pocket money to be spent, head to the world famous Hamleys toy store.
In 2012, London became the sporting centre of the world when it hosted the Olympic Games . The Olympic Park reopens as the Queen Elizabeth Park in 2013, but there’s plenty to keep you sports fanatics occupied until then. Soak up the atmosphere at one of London’s 13 professional football clubs, watch a cricket match at Lords, see the pros in action at Wimbledon, or take in a football or rugby match at the incredible Wembley Stadium.
London is a dream for shopaholics , whatever your budget or taste. High-end meets high street in Oxford Street, Bond Street, Regent Street, Knightsbridge and the boutiques of Westbourne Grove, Carnaby Street and Covent Garden. Those with a penchant for vintage need to head to Portobello, Camden, Spitalfields and Brick Lane markets. And don’t fret if you’re caught out by the rain - the Westfield shopping centres, Dover Street Market and world-famous stores like Liberty, Selfridges and Harrods will all keep you dry.
It may be one of the world’s most cutting-edge cities, but there’s evidence of London’s rich history all over. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Tower of London, Westminster Palace, Westminster Abbey, and Maritime Greenwich are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites as well as top attractions. For a glimpse of London that dates back to Roman times, visit the historic City of London, also known as the Square Mile.
Don’t just stick to the traditional tourist areas - explore London’s residential ‘villages’, where you can experience the city as locals know it. Hampstead, Greenwich, Barnes, Highgate, Wimbledon and Richmond are packed full of beautiful houses, boutiques and restaurants, but don’t miss the edgier areas like Brixton and Dalston which are home to dynamic culture and cool music.

16 Ways To REALLY Annoy A Londoner - The How-to guide to survival in london. How NOT to piss off a Londoner.
1. Trying to sneakily dump your rubbish because you’re too lazy to take it with you.
“No, no, no, you didn’t look suspicious at all stuffing that crisp packet behind you and legging it off the train before anyone could pull you up on it. Reeeeeeal mature, buddy.”
2. Playing suuuuuuper-loud music.
Playing suuuuuuper-loud music.
“You know what I really love? Hearing the dull tat-TAT-tat-TAT of repetitive hi-hats belonging to some dumb dance song through the medium of your headphones. Yep. Love it. Better than a festival. Definitely doesn’t make me want to cry.”
3. Wearing a huge rucksack at rush hour.
“Look, I’ll level with you: I get it. You really want to bring your gym kit to work. I understand. I feel you. But the extra space summoned by your rucksack is forcing me so tight into the corner of this carriage that I’m going to have to assume gaseous form to continue. Cool? Cool.”
4. Having a large suitcase – anywhere.
“Ma’am that is FAR too big for you.”
5. Barging onto a train without letting people off first.
“Oh, somewhere to be, have we? Yeah, you and everyone else trying to get around this evening…”
6. Shuffling.
“Surely you can see, just as well as I can see, that there is an oversaturation of people on this street. It is full to the gills. And you, sirs, are walking at the pace of a retired tortoise. LET’S SPEED IT UP.”
7. Abruptly stopping still.
“I’m not saying stopping in the middle of a busy street for a group selfie should be grounds for banning, but let’s at least have a conversation about it.”
8. Asking them to travel outside of Zone 2.
“The following are unacceptable: Wimbledon, Tooting, Richmond, Walthamstow, Highgate, and all those strange places the Metropolitan line visits somewhere near Reading.”
9. Not adhering to proper escalator etiquette.
“Where do you think this is, America? Because, when you think about it, we go slow on the right and overtake on the left…which is actually a whole lot like America.”
10. Failing to move down the carriage.
“MOVE. DOWN. THE TRAIN. PLEASE.”
11. Being flummoxed by a ticket machine.
“What’s that? It’s your first time in the capital? UNACCEPTABLE!”
(“This situation most definitely has nothing to do with the fact I decided to rock up at the station two minutes before my train leaves…”)
12. Showing a complete disregard for Britain’s rich cultural history of queuing.
“I’m not going to say anything, I’m just going to glare, tut, and work myself up into a silent rage, of which I’ll later take out on my co-workers and loved ones.”
13. Talking to them about the weather.
“OH, RAINY IS IT? HADN’T NOTICED.”
14. Talking to them about house prices.
“OH, EXPENSIVE IS IT? HADN’T NOTICED.”
15. Trying to talk to them, full stop.
“Oh god, I just made eye contact with another human.”
16. Suggesting that maybe they should think about living elsewhere?
