Who We Are
Gender Action for Peace and Security (GAPS) is the UK’s only Women, Peace and Security civil society network. We are a membership organisation of 17 NGOs and experts in the field of development, human rights, humanitarian and peacebuilding.
We were founded to progress the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security . Our role is to promote and hold the UK government to account on its international commitments to women in conflict areas worldwide.
How we work
Through our collaborative advocacy, campaigning and research, GAPS highlights the realities of women living in conflict-affected countries to decision-makers and practitioners and to promote their participation at all levels.We are dedicated to promoting, facilitating and monitoring the inclusion of gender perspectives in all aspects of UK government peace and security policy and practice and work in close partnership with UK government ministers and civil servants.
By providing the secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Women, Peace and Security we ensure progress on Women, Peace and Security benefits from the influence and scrutiny of parliamentarians. GAPS does this through the powerful No Women, No Peace. campaign launched in October 2010 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security as well as our lobbying and advocacy work.
Policy
GAPS operates across a variety of policy areas. These include the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (NAP), the Building Stability Overseas Strategy (BSOS) and the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI). As well as United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1325, we also work from further resolutions related to Women, Peace and Security.
For example, recently we have advocated for women’s rights in Afghanistan, a focus country for the UK’s National Action Plan. One example of this was at the London Development Conference in December 2014 where we worked closely with coalition women’s rights organisation the Afghan Women’s Network.
With the expertise of our seventeen members, we promote strong advocacy from civil society through coordinated action.
The work of GAPS is coordinated by our staff with support from members and overseen by our advisory board and management committee.
