Wop

Wop is a pejorative slur used to describe Italians, or people descended from Italians.

Etymology

According to Merriam-Webster its first known use was in the United States in 1908. The dictionary is unambiguous that it originates from a southern Italian dialect term guappo, meaning thug, derived from the Spanish term guapo, meaning handsome, via dialectical French, meaning ruffian or pimp. It also has roots in the Latin vappa, meaning wine gone flat.

A false etymology sometimes promulgated is that "wop" is an acronym that comes from "without passport" or "without papers." The term has nothing to do with immigration documents which were not required by US immigration officers until 1918, long after the term came into use in the United States. Further, turning acronyms into words did not become common practice until after World War II, with the practice accelerating with the growth of the United States Space Program and the Cold War.

Popular culture

The term is used in the bar fight scene in the film From Here to Eternity. During the Watergate scandal, President Richard Nixon referred to United States District Court Judge John Sirica as a "gol' darn wop."

J. Dash

Jameyel Johnson, (born September 3, 1984) better known by his stage name J. Dash, is an American rapper, record producer and songwriter, born in Jacksonville, Florida.

Life and career

Raised in the American South, J. Dash went to Stanton College Preparatory School and played in the school band. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida. His first approach to music was at the age of 5, when he learned to play piano by ear. At age 12 he was in a blues band, and later played keyboards in the Fusebox Funk band.

J. Dash's single, "Wop," reached the no. 1 position on the Billboard Heatseekers Songs chart on April 13, 2013. The song is prominently featured in Céline Sciamma's 2014 film Girlhood.

Dash is known to be a TuneCore user, through which he distributes his own music.

Flo Rida

Tramar Lacel Dillard (born September 16, 1979), better known by his stage name Flo Rida (pronounced /floʊ ˈraɪdə/,) is an American hip hop recording artist from Carol City, Florida. He is known for releasing a string of hits, such as his 2008 breakout single "Low", which was number one for 10 weeks in the United States and broke the record for digital download sales at the time of its release. "Low" was followed by the Top 40 hits, "Elevator" and "In the Ayer".

As of 2016, Flo Rida has released four studio albums. His first album, 2008's Mail on Sunday, debuted at number four in the US. The album was succeeded by R.O.O.T.S., the next year. His subsequent albums, 2010's Only One Flo (Part 1) and 2012's Wild Ones, also charted on the US Billboard 200 chart.

Flo Rida has sold over 80 million records worldwide. His catalog includes the international hit singles "Right Round", "Club Can't Handle Me", "Good Feeling", "Wild Ones", "Whistle", "I Cry" and "G.D.F.R.", among others.

Gucci Mane

Radric Davis (born February 12, 1980), better known by his stage name Gucci Mane, is an American rapper. In 2005, he began to burst into this hip hop music scene with the release of his first independent album Trap House, which followed by his second and third independent albums, Hard to Kill and Trap-A-Thon in 2006. His fourth independent album Back to the Trap House was released in 2007.

In 2009, Gucci Mane released his sixth studio album The State vs. Radric Davis. The Appeal: Georgia's Most Wanted was released in 2010, and is his highest charting album so far. Thus far, Gucci Mane elevated his music career by not only the release of his several mixtapes and independent albums, but through his collaborations on songs, tracks and singles with artists, such as Lil Wayne, T.I., Omarion, Mariah Carey and Young Jeezy as well. On May 21, 2013, he released his eighth studio album Trap House III. His ninth studio album, The State vs. Radric Davis II: The Caged Bird Sings was released on December 25, 2013. He also is the founder and CEO of 1017 Brick Squad Records.
