The Russian geographic name "Ossetia" and the corresponding ethnic designation "Ossetians" comes from a Georgian root.
The Russians originally called the Ossetians Yas (ясы, connected with Iazyges).
In Late Antiquity, records became much more diffuse and the Iazyges generally ceased to be mentioned as a tribe. In the Middle Ages an East Iranian people appeared in Eastern-Europe, the Jazones. The Jazones, or Jász, an Ossetic people who migrated to Hungary, are first mentioned in Hungarian records in the year 1318, and their name, spelled in Greek means "Jasons" (Ιάσωνες). The Jász in Hungary maintained their language until the 18th century. While they have become linguistically Hungarian, descendants in the Jász area of Hungary still maintain some original culture and have folk consciousness of their origins.

STORYLINE:
Georgia and the Moscow-backed breakaway province of South Ossetia both marked the first anniversary of their conflict on Friday.
The five-day war, with Russian troops and tanks backing South Ossetian forces, killed at least 390 people, displaced tens of thousands and left a legacy of animosity between leaders and fears among civilians that more fighting may erupt.
South Ossetia, only recognised by Russia as independent, is cut off from the rest of Georgia by military checkpoints.
Thousands of Russian troops are based in South Ossetia, supporting local forces widely alleged to have killed ethnic Georgian civilians, burned their houses and driven them at gunpoint from the region.
On a road near to the village of Kelchua in South Ossetia, destroyed and burnt out buildings formally belonging to Georgian civilians remain untouched.
Meanwhile, South Ossetians living in the village itself remain afraid that the conflict could restart at any time.
Clutching a photograph of her son who she said was killed in the fighting, Etery Kisiyeva described the terrible scene in her village during the fighting.
She said many villagers are still too scared to venture out of their homes, and often hear gunfire.
A year later, the dispute over what started the war remains heated.
Russia and South Ossetia contend it began with a thunderous Georgian artillery assault on Tskhinvali and that Moscow sent in troops to protect Russian peacekeeping forces and civilians; Georgia says it launched the barrage to try to repel Russian tanks and troops that had begun an invasion before dawn.
What is a reality though is the presence of Russian troops and bases in South Ossetia.

STORYLINE:
In a turnaround from his government's position a year ago, Georgia's President says he is now willing to offer autonomy to the breakaway province of South Ossetia "under international supervision".
Following his election in January 2004, President Saakashvili vowed to unite his fractured country by reining in South Ossetia and another breakaway province, Abkhazia, and deadly fighting between Georgian and South Ossetian forces broke out in August.
But in an exclusive interview with APTN, Saakashvili said he was now ready to offer South Ossetia "a very wide ranging autonomy" with "guarantees for this autonomy under international supervision" - an apparent reference to an international observer mission with Western participation.
Officials from Georgia and South Ossetia met for talks on Monday after a spate of abductions raised tensions between the central government and separatists.
The trust-building commission, which includes Russian officials, met as separatist South Ossetian fighters continued to hold a Georgian police officer, Lado Chalauri.
The abductions have heightened tension in the separatist region, which has been de facto independent since a separatist war in the early 1990s.
Many South Ossetians carry Russian passports and separatist leaders are seeking to unite the region with their ethnic kin in North Ossetia, across the border in Russia.
Resolving tensions in South Ossetia and Abkhazia appear central to Saakashvili's plans to bring Georgia closer to Europe.
"Georgia has been getting remarkable attention from our immediate European neighbours for the last year," he said. "But we want now this attention to become more concrete and more focused on resolving the existing issues in order just to turn this page of history and just develop and get closer to Europe."
However the president signalled that he would also be seeking to improve ties with Russia, which have been strained over the past decade.

STORYLINE
Lira Tskhovrebova flew nearly 6,000 miles (10,000 kilometres) to Washington on a mission: The self described independent activist from South Ossetia wanted to challenge the strong US support for Georgia in its war with Russia over the breakaway region and describe atrocities by Georgian troops.
Backed by an expensive public relations firm, Tskhovrebova lined up meetings with US officials, including staff for Senator Patrick Leahy, chairman of a panel overseeing foreign aid. The US government itself paid for an academic event where she plans to speak this week.
What Americans meeting with Tskhovrebova did not know is that she has ties to South Ossetia's KGB security service.
Georgia says she's a spy. Tskhovrebova ridicules the idea and says she is the victim of a smear campaign. But US officials have become wary of her, questioning who paid for her Washington tour.
Tskhovrebova's trip reflects the high-stakes campaign between Georgia and Russia, each eager to blame the other for their August war and to influence US policy as US president-elect Barack Obama assumes the presidency.
Georgian intelligence provided The Associated Press with secretly recorded conversations in which Tskhovrebova appears to discuss assignments, money and information with Vasily Guliev, deputy director for counterintelligence for the South Ossetian security agency still known by the Soviet-era acronym KGB.
"I don't have any money left. Yesterday I learned super ... not super ... but very important information completely by chance," she told Guliev during a call in June 2005, according to the recordings. Guliev quickly agreed to meet with her privately.
