Jobs

Reporter (Washington, DC)

TalkingPointsMemo.com is hiring a reporter to work in our Washington, DC office. Reporters are the main arms of our editorial team, using a mix of good old fashioned reporting skills and digital native tools to identify stories, grab hold of them and not let go until there's no more news left in them to report. Our model is iterative journalism, which means we strive not to be captive to any single format but rather let the story and news of the moment dictate the format we use to cover it.

We're looking for someone who is deeply conversant with the news world and ready to work at the fast-paced metabolism of a new media news organization. A solid grasp of contemporary U.S. politics, a real familiarity with TPM, and solid news judgment are each a must. Health care policy expertise a definite plus. We want reporters who are just as ready to jump on a story in Arizona or Ohio as Washington, DC. Our scope is American politics and political culture on a broad canvas, wherever it happens. Applicants should have 3 to 5 years editorial experience, ideally in settings with some similarity to TPM.

Competitive salary, health insurance coverage, 401(k), three weeks paid vacation per year. To apply, submit a resume and cover letter. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Story Editor (Washington, DC)

TPM is seeking a Story Editor in its Washington DC bureau to assist with managing copy flow, copy editing, headline writing, and overall story quality. You have at least three years' experience as a story editor in online news and know the basics of copyediting and fact-checking. You have great news judgment, encyclopedic political knowledge, and a wide-ranging curiosity.

You delight in writing cleverly effective headlines. You relish the challenge of developing a style guide from scratch and bringing a consistency of style to a newsroom. You know AP style like the back of your hand.

You can punch up ledes, rescue a buried lede, or rewrite extensively – and do it all at a blazing speed. You can help coordinate the copy flow across two offices in different cities and with reporters in the field.

You are practical and adaptive. You understand the demands of a digital newsroom and can roll with the punches.

You are a good teammate, quickly earn the respect of your colleagues, and can be relied on when the going gets tough. You know that a good sense of humor is essential in all things.

The position offers health insurance coverage, 401(k), and three weeks paid vacation per year.

Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Fellowships (NYC)

TPM fellows in our New York office are involved in every aspect of our operation and have a hand in everything we do. They work alongside our reporters to write and break stories, help our editors keep a finger on the pulse of the news day, and produce all kinds of digital media from youtube clips to mash-up photographs. The fellows also attend weekly brown bag lunches with reporters, editors and publishing staff to learn the ins and outs of the new media business.

Half of our current staff is made up of former TPM fellows. Other fellows and interns have moved on to jobs in new and old media alike, working for Think Progress, The New Republic, The Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, The New York Sun, The New Yorker, The Washington Post and more.

In early 2009 we introduced our Editorial Fellows program, which runs for three (3) to six (6) months and comes with a stipend. In May 2011 we launched our tech fellowship program, and in March 2012 we launched our Publishing Fellows program.

To learn more about what we do at TPM and what we’ve accomplished in the last year, see these news reports.

Because each fellow is encouraged to work in multiple parts of our operation, it’s important that applicants have a basic understanding of new media technologies (blogging, YouTube, etc.) and a desire and ability to learn quickly.

Publishing Fellow

TPM is hiring a Publishing Fellow to join our publishing team working out of our New York City office.

This is a 6-month fellowship that comes with a stipend. (Fellows frequently join our full time staff at the end of their fellowships.) TPM is an industry leader in digital news publishing. Through this fellowship, the Fellow will learn all aspects of running and monetizing a digital media company. The Publishing Fellow will learn to manage advertising campaigns and handle client relations, including campaign development, optimization, and reporting. The Fellow will also work with the publishing staff to devise ahead-of-market, creative ad campaigns and products. The Fellow will also learn skills related to TPM’s broader business according to evolving needs.

The ideal candidate will be highly interested in the business side of news and will be extremely creative and entrepreneurial. A working knowledge of Google analytics and Google DFP is a major plus, as is work experience in a client-facing role. A background in writing and/or journalism is also very beneficial. To apply, send a resume and cover letter to jobs@talkingpointsmemo.com. Include the subject line: “Job App: Publishing Fellow.”
