  • Oregon college gunman's family shocked; he shared views on religion online

Authorities in Roseburg, Ore. have not speculated on why 26-year-old Chris Harper-Mercer killed nine at Umpqua Community College before dying in a shootout with police officers. At a news conference Thursday evening, an agitated Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin offered little detail about the gunman. Public records don’t indicate that Harper-Mercer had a previous criminal history and most of what is known about him at this point is through those records, family and his online presence. It wasn’t immediately known if Harper-Mercer was enrolled at Umpqua, but one student told Yahoo News that students in the classroom where the shooting took place did not recognize the gunman.

  • Bed Bath and Beyond's famous coupons are backfiring

Bed Bath and Beyond is famous for dispensing coupons for 20% off almost any item. But while that strategy was successful for getting shoppers in stores for a time, it has now backfired, reports Sarah Halzack at The Washington Post. Now that consumers have come to expect coupons, the brand feels forced to issue them. The necessity of being careful with discounts is a lesson brands like Ralph Lauren, Coach, Michael Kors know all too well. These companies have reported disappointing earnings recently. Shares for all three have declined in the past year. Many of the companies' struggles can be traced back to one mistake: opening too many outlet stores. Outlet stores sell the labels' clothing for

  • If Edward Snowden Is Right About Clinton's Emails, Bernie Sanders Will Win a Landslide Victory

Perhaps nobody on the planet knows more about intelligence protocol than Edward Snowden. If Snowden says it's "completely ridiculous" to believe that Clinton's emails were safe, then yes, it's fair to include his viewpoint in any critique of Hillary Clinton's latest controversy. In addition, since I believe Senator Bernie Sanders is desperately...

  • I poured drain cleaner in my eyes to blind myself

For most people, going blind is their worst nightmare, but for this North Carolina woman it was a dream come true. Jewel Shuping, 30, was so desperate to be blind that she poured draining cleaner in her baby blues to wipe out her eyesight — and she couldn’t be happier. She suffers from an illness called body integrity identity disorder (BIID) — a disease that causes able-bodied people to strongly desire a disability. “I really feel this is the way I was supposed to be born, that I should have been blind from birth,” Shuping told Barcroft Media. The afflicted woman knew from a young age she wanted to be blind, and would attempt to harm her eyesight by staring at the sun while “blind-simming,”

  • Remains of 18-year-old missing for 7 years found in Colorado chimney

The remains of an 18-year-old Colorado man reported missing seven years ago were found in the chimney of an abandoned cabin less than one mile from his home, officials said Wednesday. The remains were found last month as contractors tore down the cabin in Woodland Park that had been abandoned for more than a decade. Authorities had to use dental records to identify the remains as those of Joshua Vernon Maddux, who was reported missing in May 2008 but not as a runaway. Teller County Coroner Al Born speculated that Maddux was trying to shimmy down the chimney when he got stuck. His death was ruled accidental and there were no signs of trauma, Born said. It’s unclear how long his remains were in
