Sanders is a self-described democratic socialist, and has praised European social democracy (though he has also criticized its contemporary "Third Way" departure). He is the first person elected to the U.S. Senate to identify as a socialist. Sanders caucuses with the Democratic Party and is counted as a Democrat for the purposes of committee assignments, but because he does not belong to a formal political party, he appears as an independent on the ballot. He was also the only independent member of the House during much of his service there.

Bernie Sanders Interview: Attacks From The Establishment | MSNBC
Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton said on Sunday morning that she has “no interest” in attacking Democratic rival Bernie Sanders, even as the Vermont senator continues to cut into Clinton’s lead nationally and in key early primary states.
Sanders has been reluctant to attack Clinton, even when given the opportunity to do so, insisting that journalists should stick to the issues rather than the typical mud-slinging that comes with every presidential election season...

Bernie Sanders Attack Donald Trump | Bernie Sanders Interview With CNN'S Wolf Blitzer | September 10
Bernie Sanders Absolutely Glowing in Interview on CNN - Even Goes After Establishment Media!
Bernie Sanders said new polls that show him drawing even with front-runner Hillary Clinton in key primary states are stunning.
"You want me to tell you the truth?" he asked to CNN's Wolf Blitzer in an interview Thursday when asked about his strong showing.
"Yes, I'm stunned," Sanders said. "Look, we have a message that I believed from day one was going to resonate with the American people. ... Did I think (the issues) would resonate as quickly as they have? The answer is no."
Sanders credited his focus on middle-class economics and anti-establishment message as keys to his success.
A Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday showed Sanders continues to build momentum against Clinton, puling even with her in Iowa, 41% to 40%. That's up from a 21-point deficit with Clinton two months ago. Other recent polling that has shown Sanders ahead in another key early primary state, New Hampshire, although Clinton still maintains double-digit leads in national polling.
Sanders said his campaign has received contributions from more than 400,000 people with an average donation of $31.20, while eschewing raising MONEY for super PACs.
As for Clinton's inability to move past the scandal over her use of a private email server as secretary of state, Sanders wouldn't quite say it was hurting her standing.
"I think it's clearly not helping her," he said.
The Vermont senator, who serves as an independent in Congress and has identified as a democratic socialist, was pressed on whether he was a true Democrat.
He said it's "no secret" he's an independent in Congress, but he has always caucused with Democrats.
"I am going to be doing everything that I can to see that the Democratic Party is successful in November," he said.
"I am a proud progressive," he added in response to Clinton telling an Ohio crowd on Thursday that she's a moderate.
He also didn't get into whether Vice President Joe Biden should jump into the race, an option the vice president is weighing with this family.
"I neither want him to jump or not want him to jump in," Sanders said. "That's a personal decision that he has to make."
Sanders also weighed in on the Republican side of the race, including GOP front-runner Donald Trump.
"I think he's obviously a very flamboyant guy," Sanders said. "I think he's clearly doing a lot better in the Republican process that anyone thought he would. I am sad to say that in the year 2015, people like Trump are using racism as a way to attract votes."
The senator specifically hit Trump for comments he made about some illegal immigrants being rapists and criminals.
"His remarks were totally objectionable and they were racist," Sanders said.

Bernie Sanders Speaks With Katie Couric - Full Interview
"Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) believes the Democratic Party is using its limited primary debate schedule to rig the nomination process.
“I do,” Sanders reportedly responded when asked Friday whether he agrees with former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley’s assertion that the debate system is “rigged.”
The two Democratic presidential candidates were speaking at the summer meeting of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in Minneapolis on Friday.
“This sort of rigged process has never been attempted before,” O’Malley said in his speech earlier Friday.
The DNC has drawn criticism for scheduling only four debates before the early-primary states cast their votes, and six total throughout the election cycle.
DNC spokeswoman Holly Shulman defended the schedule, saying it will “give plenty of opportunity for the candidates to be seen side-by-side.”"

Why Won't Bernie Sanders Take "Socialist" As An Insult?
Rand Paul on Friday said Senator Bernie Sanders is misleading the American people by calling for the expansion of Social Security entitlements.
“It is a disservice to the country for Bernie Sanders to say there will be more Social Security for everybody,” he told listeners during the Heritage Action Presidential Forum in Greenville, S.C.
“There is no free lunch,” Paul said. “That just means somebody else is paying for it and they’re not showing you who’s paying for it instead.”
“If Social Security is short of money, you can’t promise people more of it,” he added. “You have to figure out how to do it with less money.” Paul said rampant, unchecked entitlement spending of any kind is detrimental to America’s future.
“We’re going to destroy the country if we do that,” he said.

A Short Bio on Rand Paul
Senator Rand Paul, M.D. is one of the nation’s leading advocates for liberty. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, Dr. Paul has proven to be an outspoken champion for constitutional liberties and fiscal responsibility. As a fierce advocate against government overreach, Rand has fought tirelessly to return government to its limited, constitutional scope.
A devoted husband and father, Dr. Paul and his family live in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where Rand owned his own ophthalmology practice and performed eye surgery for 18 years. As a hard-working and dedicated physician--not a career politician--Rand Paul came to Washington to shake things up and to make a difference.
Dr. Paul has been married for 24 years to Kelley Ashby Paul of Russellville, Kentucky, and together, they have three sons: William, 21; Duncan, 18; and Robert, 15. He regularly volunteered to coach teams for each of his three sons in Little League baseball, soccer, and basketball. Rand and Kelley are both devout Christians and are active in their local church.
Rand is the third of five children born to Carol and Ron Paul. He grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas and attended Baylor University. He graduated from Duke Medical School in 1988. Dr. Paul completed a general surgery internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center. Upon completion of his training in 1993, Rand and Kelley moved to Bowling Green to start their family and begin his ophthalmology practice.
In 1995, Rand founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic, an organization that provides eye exams and surgery to needy families and individuals. Rand is a former president and 17 year member of Lions Clubs International, which is dedicated to preserving sight by providing eyeglasses and surgery to the less fortunate around the world. In recognition of his outstanding and sustained efforts to provide vision care to Kentuckians in need, Lions Clubs International has awarded Rand many of its highest commendations.
A large part of Rand's daily work as an ophthalmologist was dedicated to preserving the vision of our seniors. In 2002, The Twilight Wish Foundation recognized Rand for Outstanding Service and Commitment to Seniors.
Dr. Paul's entrance into politics is indicative of his life’s work as a surgeon: a desire to diagnose problems and provide practical solutions, whether it be in Bowling Green, Kentucky or Washington, D.C.
Randal Howard "Rand" Paul (born January 7, 1963) is an American physician and politician from Kentucky. In office since 2011, Paul currently serves in the United States Senate as a member of the Republican Party. He is also a trained ophthalmologist, and is the middle son of former U.S. Representative and physician Ron Paul of Texas.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul attended Baylor University and is a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine. Paul began practicing ophthalmology in 1993 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and established his own clinic in December 2007.
Paul has been considered a supporter of the Tea Party movement, and a vocal critic of the Federal Reserve System. He has opposed NSA mass surveillance of Americans and supports reduced government spending and taxation. He describes himself as "100% pro-life" and has cosponsored legislation for equal protection of the right to life from conception. Paul officially announced his candidacy for the 2016 U.S. presidential election on April 7, 2015.

Bill O’Reilly is very upset that Bernie Sanders refuses to grant him an interview recently, so as a result he called on his buddy Jesse Waters to do an ambush interview. "“I don’t do ambush interviews,” Sanders told Watters. “So if you want to talk to us, there’s my press secretary.”
“Well, I do do ambush interviews and I just had a question for you,” Watters snappily replied, asking Sanders if he thought he was too “big-time” for the show. “O’Reilly is upset because you haven’t done the show,” Watters insisted. Sanders sat for an O’Reilly interview as recently as this past May.
Watters then appeared to knock the senator with his microphone. “Don’t push me,” Sanders warned, “I didn’t get rough, you pushed me.””*

The energy was just sucked out of my body. I was exhausted watching this stuff.” Sanders offered live commentary on Twitter during the debate on Wednesday night, arguing that each of the 11 candidates was boasting about a tough foreign policy.
“Did you hear one word from anybody who said, ‘Well, climate change is a real threat to the planet — we need bold action?’ No,” the Democratic candidate told Maddow. “Did you hear one person say, ‘The real value of the minimum wage has declined significantly over the years — we need to raise the minimum wage?’ No.”
Maddow also showed footage of Republican front-runner Donald Trump’s anecdote during the event linking autism to vaccine, which was not shot down by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) or Ben Carson, both of whom are or were medical professionals.
“It made me feel like last night’s Republican debate was like a public health hazard in addition to everything else it was,” she said.
“I think the evidence is overwhelming that vaccines do not cause autism,” the senator responded. “And it really is a little bit weird for Trump — who, I presume, has no medical background — to be raising this issue. And obviously it is a concern. When somebody like that says it, you’re gonna find thousands of people now who are gonna hesitate to give their kids the shots, and bad things may happen.”

Bernie Sanders: We’re Going To Put the Private Insurance Companies ‘out of Business’ FULL INTERVIEW
CBS Interview 9/18/2015: Bernie Sanders on universal healthcare, taxing the rich and taking on Clinton. Bernie Sanders: We’re Going To Put the Private Insurance Companies ‘out of Business’ ‘We spend far more per capita on health care than do the people of any other country’. O’DONNELL: 'There’s no disputing what you’re talking about. I think, what your own Democratic governor -- and you’re running as a Democrat -- encountered in Vermont is that while it was an ideal to give everyone health care for all. The ability of actually paying for it became the real problem and he didn’t want to bust the budget in Vermont.'
SANDERS: 'What we are talking about now, number one, let’s be clear. We spend far more per capita on health care than do the people of any other country. Thirty million people today have zero health insurance. Millions more are underinsured. No one debates that fact. What the story is, is how can you create universal health care for every man, woman and child and do it in a cost and effective way. Other countries do it. The United States of America can do it. Now, I know the private insurance companies don’t like this idea, we’re going to put them out of business. And the drug companies that are ripping off the American people and charging us the highest prices in the world, don’t like the idea. Tough luck.'

"His remarks were totally objectionable and they were racist," Sanders said.

bernie sanders joined the rachel maddow show tonight to discuss a wide range of topics. bernie sanders gives his opinion on yesterday's gop debate and what he would do for this country if elected president. Rachel Maddow Bernie Sanders FULL Interview Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) kept up his criticism of the Republican presidential candidates on Thursday night, pointing out their refusal to address several issues, seemingly without repercussions. “Republicans get away with murder, because they are never challenged,” he told MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. “Last night, I have to tell you, I did quit after two-and-a-half hours.
Watch footage from the interview, as aired on Thursday, below.
Chris Hayes talks to Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., about why the new poll numbers surprised him and why he won't repeat what he calls Obama's "biggest political mistake."

I start my approach to healthcare from two very basic premises. First, healthcare must be recognized as a right, not a privilege.
