There aren't as many country songs about African truckers, but they are no less the virile champions of industry and gluteal fortitude as their US counterparts. On their backs rest the burden of an entire continent's economic development and through their bloodstreams runs a hell of a lot of the continent's HIV.
Trade in West Africa is perennially fucked, partially because the colonial powers of the 19th and early 20th centuries chopped the place up into a pizza pie of nonsensical borders, but also because most post-colonial governments in the area were so unabashedly corrupt we had to coin the term "kleptocracy" to describe them. Driving a semi full of margarine a US state's length to its delivery point often involves passing through 3-4 separate countries and navigating the byzantine customs and immigration processes at each port of entry. Then there are the internal checkpoints manned by local police and customs agents on the lookout for smugglers, or non-smugglers who can be intimidated into coughing up a bribe. Then there's just fuckers who'll pull you over and straight-up rob you. Infrastructure ain't always so hot here, either.
All of which turns shipments which would take a few hours in Europe or America into grueling, day-cum-week-cum-monthlong affairs punctuated by long and unpredictable periods of complete standstill. Which, in addition to wasting fuel and driving up the cost of goods with every unplanned stop, also fuels the sort of boredom that can only be fought by dumping money into the less savory sectors of the economy. Namely booze sales and roadside prostitution. Which is where the AIDS come in.
Intrigued by the African long-haul trucker's dual reputation as the foundational building block of West Africa's would-be robust economy and lotharious Johnny AIDS-leseed, we hitched a ride with a trailer full of soap to see just how hard it is to get from point-A to point-basically-A-and-a-half.

In partnership with Jesus the Light of Life Outreach Ministry and Pastor Vernon Roberts, I will be working to assist children and their families in Togo, West Africa. We are answering a call for help, from the church of Sainte Monique of Pesare village, where my late father (Joseph Petalo) was a deacon. Before my father’s death, he worked tirelessly to make positive differences in the lives of the residents of our village. Even though the church did not have much, Joseph succeeded in spreading the gospel throughout the village so that people could receive the love of God. Today, the church is in dire need of remodeling and a paint job. I have

Nubia
The first episode looks at Nubia, in what is now northern Sudan, a kingdom that dominated a vast area of the eastern Sahara for thousands of years. Its people were described as barbarians and mercenaries, and yet Nubia has left us with some of the most spectacular monuments in the world. Casely-Hayford traces the origins of this fascinating kingdom back to 10,000 BC. He explores how it developed and what happened to it and its people, discovering that its kings once ruled Ancient Egypt and that it was defeated not by its rivals but by its environment.

23andme Black family w/Asian,Native American &African; Haplotypes
Had to re-upload due to issues with youtube. Decided to add some extra information to the video.
Black American family with world wide ancestry.
My updated results from Both 23andme and AncestryDNA plus I go into great detail about how to navigate DNA relatives. I also give information on how females can find their YDNA not only on their paternal side, but their maternal side, which works for men seeking their YDNA on their maternal side as well. If you do not want to watch the video as always the results will be below.
I still recommend 23andme over AncestryDNA..however, if you have the extra money, it doesn't hurt to test with both companies.
_______________________ Judging from my results overall from both companies my Ancestry is at the very least is exclusively 46-50% West African..The rest is spread all over. I am not sure how accurate the percentages are so I just take from it that my ancestry is basically global.
23andme did an update back on December 17, 2014. Some changes were made to my results. Sub-Saharan Africa went up from 73.5 to 75.5 2.3% increase and East African was added to the subgroup. I wasn't really surprised with the update because I could see it in my Raw DNA results already via GEDMATCH
So for a recap of my updated 23andme results from Dec. 2014 to current Spring 2015.
(standard view).
Sub Saharan Africa 75.5%
(50.2% West African, 4.1% East African, 3.9% Central/South African, 17.3% Broadly Sub-Saharan African. )
Europe 10.2%
(Southern European
Iberian 4.1%
Italian 2.1%
Broadly Southern European 0.6%
Northern European
British and Irish 2.1%
Broadly Northern European 1%
Broadly European 0.3%)
Asian/Native American 8.1% ( Native American 5%
Southeast Asian 2.1%
Broadly East Asian & Native American 1%)
Middle eastern/North African 3.0% ( North African 1.6%
Broadly Middle Eastern & North African 1.4%)
Oceanian 1.5%
1.7% Unassigned. Overall pretty cool, 23andme now kind of matches up with my raw DNA on GEDMATCH a little more.
Not sure when AncestryDNA did their update I just know that they are always sending me annoying emails that I never check! They finally fixed where they had Native American under a trace region..now it's just by its self and still the same 5%.
I noticed a few other differences as well, as they took away some of the things that were once there, like central Asia, My less than 1% Mali, Ireland, and changed a few other things.
North African went down from 13% to 8% and SouthEastern African changed from 18% to a lovely 24%!
They still refuse to admit that they made a mistake with my initial results, they just said that results can change or stay the same as their database updates. Overall my Africa percentage changed from 76 to 78 and Europe went down 1 percent which is pretty cool...feel free to compare with the old results in my description box on my older videos. I haven't checked to see if anything changed with GEDMatch.
Updated AncestryDNA results breakdown as of spring 2015
Africa 78% ( Africa Southeastern Bantu 24%
Ivory Coast/Ghana 17%
Benin/Togo 11%
Nigeria 9%
Africa North 8%
Cameroon/Congo 8%
Africa South-Central Hunter-Gatherers less than 1%)
America 5% (Native American)
Asia 3% ( Asia South 2% Asia East 1% )
Europe 10% (Iberian Peninsula 4%
Europe West 2%
Italy/Greece 2%
Great Britain 2%)
Pacific Islander 2% (Melanesia)
West Asia 2% ( Middle East)
______________________________
My first maternal cousins tested with 23andme as well as my first paternal cousin. Paternal cousin is YDNA E1b1a Maternal cousins YDNA Q1a3a (native american)
All of them had higher percentages of Native American, but lower percentage of Asian and European than me.
My paternal cousin (father is my uncle) was marked 15.9% N.A 1% East Asian.
My maternal cousins (Father is my uncle) are brothers and one had lower than the other 12.5% and 14.1% N.A.
One was 2.3% SouthEast Asian the other 1.7%.
They all were less than 10% European. Around 80% African,
and about 65-70% of that being West African.
Population percentages are just that percentages. They can very and are not 100% accurate, so not sure why people take them so much to heart. It's just numbers, nothing to be upset (or) excited over. The best thing to find out is your haplotypes which really tell you what your bloodline is, no matter your race (or) mixture.
I really want to get my mother and grandmother (maternal) tested. I want to see what my split view will be on 23andme. Split view tells you what part of your ancestry comes from each parent. You only need one parent to test.

Guinea-Bissau's prime minister has resigned after 20 days in the post and two days after appointing his cabinet.
Baciro Dja handed in his resignation after the Supreme Court ruled his appointment violated the constitution.
There has been political turmoil in the West African nation since President Jose Mario Vaz sacked all his ministers last month.
With a history of coups, no elected leader has served a full term since independence from Portugal in 1974.
BBC Africa Live: News updates
President Vaz sacked the previous prime minister - Domingos Simoes Pereira - after a series of rifts including the naming of the new army chief, the AFP news agency reports.
A week later he appointed Mr Dja by presidential decree, against the wishes of the ruling PAIGC party.
The Supreme Court judges said that Mr Dja had been given the job without properly consulting the political parties in parliament.
There have been demonstrations over Mr Pereira's dismissal, but they have been peaceful and the military has vowed to stay out of the political tug of war, Reuters news agency reports.

1. What are the short and long term prospects for Nigeria?
• Short term negative due to political uncertainty and oil price volatility
• Long term positive due to the potential of the largest economy and most populous country in Africa
2. How is the political situation in Egypt impacting the economy?
• The political situation in Egypt is one of relative stability despite sporadic protests by the supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood who represent a small minority of the population
• The economy is starting to recover from the damage caused during the period of the Arab Spring and GDP growth is expected to more than double this year from the current level
3. What impact did Ebola have on continent?
• Tragic event in human terms but largely confined to three relatively small West African countries
• In economic terms despite the headlines, not a significant impact on Africa as a whole
4. What features continue to differentiate Africa from other regions?
• Diversification, with 54 countries at different stages of economic development
• Lack of correlation - this diversification contributes to the lack of correlation that African stock markets exhibit both in relation to each other and in relation to developed and emerging markets in general

Ethiopia
When Emperor Haile Selassie was deposed by the Ethiopian military in 1974, an ancient kingdom came to an end. According to tradition, the imperial dynasty stretched back virtually unbroken to 950 BC and its origins had links to King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. The legitimacy of Haile Selassie and the foundations of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church rested on this claim, but was it true? Casely-Hayford searches for the evidence and discovers why faith in the legend has lasted for centuries. He traces Ethiopia's heritage back in time, investigating its astonishing secrets and legends.
Great Zimbabwe
In 1871, European explorers stumbled across an astonishing ruined city, deep in the African interior. Great Zimbabwe has been a source of fascination and controversy ever since, a symbol of African genius and a fascinating insight into the empires which once dominated southern Africa.
Casely-Hayford goes in search of the roots of this immense kingdom. He traces the trade in gold and precious goods that sustained it and uncovers the kingdoms that grew up around it.
West Africa
When magnificent 16th century bronze casts were discovered in the kingdom of Benin in 1897, many could not believe they had been made by Africans. It was thought West Africa lacked the technical development required to make them. Dr Casely-Hayford travels to present-day Nigeria and Mali in search of the truth, exploring what the bronzes mean, how the technology to make them developed, and what it reveals about the lost kingdoms of West Africa.

Africa's Cowboy Capitalists (Full Length)
For maverick entrepreneur Ian Cox, Africa is the last frontier of free enterprise. The former small-time hustler has been busting his ass on the continent for years, selling and moving merchandise. In 2012 he nabbed a lucrative United Nations contract to transport equipment from South Africa to South Sudan, a country on many countries' embargo list. The other problem: the journey north entails passing through countless checkpoints and dealing with bribe-happy officials and their nonsensical paperwork and regulations.
Photographer and filmmaker Tim Freccia followed around Ian and the guys he hired for this job. "Cowboy Capitalists" documents

KanKouran West African Dance Company was founded for the purpose of contributing to the extension of the arts by introducing the essence of traditional African dancing and drumming to audiences; enriching American cultural heritage through the integration of authentic West African performing arts; and promoting intercultural understanding through education and the performing arts.
KanKouran was formed in 1983, in Washington, DC, by Artistic Director Assane Konte and former Director of Music, Abdou Kounta, who grew up together in Dakar, Senegal. After many months of recruiting, training and performing at local venues, the Company presented its first full-length concert, "A Visit to Africa" in 1985. And with that performance, an institution was born. Although many dancers and drummers have come and gone over the years, KanKouran continues under the leadership of its co-founder and Artistic Director, Assane Konte. The Company's success is perhaps best judged by its longevity and by the large number of company and community members who are involved in diverse academic, professional, and entrepreneurial pursuits, and who credit KanKouran with instilling within them the discipline, pride, and commitment to self and community which have made their life pursuits meaningful as well as successful.
This performance took place on January 20, 2013 as part of the Out of Many multicultural festival of music, dance, and story.

"Cowboy Capitalists" documents their attempts to navigate the continent's dangerous roads and bureaucratic chaos.

Unsatisfied with the meager winnings from emailing thousands of random Westerners in hopes of convincing one poor sap they're the treasurer of the Ivory Coast, Ghana's scammers decided to stack the odds in their favor the old-fashioned way—witchcraft.
Taking a page from cyberpunk, traditional West African Juju priests adapted their services to the needs of the information age and started leading down-on-their-luck internet scammers through strange and costly rituals designed to increase their powers of persuasion and make their emails irresistible to greedy Americans. And so "Sakawa" was born.
Now not only is Sakawa Ghana's most popular youth activity and one of its biggest underground economies, it's a full-blown national phenomenon. Sakawa has its own tunes, clothing brands, Sakawasploitation flicks, and even a metastatic backlash from Christian preachers and the press. When we were in Accra over the summer it was impossible to walk more than 10 feet without seeing the word Sakawa in blood-red Misfits letters on a poster or tabloid, often accompanied by bone-chilling horrors of the photoshopped variety.
The government is freaked out because Sakawa is threatening Ghana's business reputation, the Christians are freaked out because they're losing money to the Juju priests, the press is freaked out because being freaked out is what sells papers, and the public is freaked out because their government, preacher, and media are all telling them they should be. All the while the Sakawa boys are living the high life and racking up debts to the spirit world, just waiting for the axe to fall.

West African truck drivers spend days, weeks, and sometimes months dealing with corrupt border officials and illegal checkpoints on harrowing delivery trips that should take just a few hours.
--
The truck driver holds a mythic stature in American music, from the hayseed hagiographies of Slim Jacobs and Bobby Sykes to the liner notes of Big Black's Songs About Fucking.

"Cowboy Capitalists" documents their attempts to navigate the continent's dangerous roads and bureaucratic chaos.
