Iranian faces sixth Christmas in detention

Refugee advocates say they are trying to determine why an Iranian man is about to spend his sixth Christmas in detention.

The Refugee Action Collective will try to speak with Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone during her visit to Melbourne today.

Sasan Mashayekhi, 32, who has been in custody at the Port Hedland Detention centre, has released a statement wishing all Australians a happy Christmas and says he spends every moment thinking about a life outside.

He says his brother in Iran is missing, believed dead, and he fears for his life if sent home.

Refugee Action Collective spokeswoman Renee Handsaker says he has waited patiently for a decision on his fate but is now feeling despondent.

"He's basically just at the end of his tether now and just saying he can't do this anymore," she said.
