Anti-nuclear protest at Western Mining AGM – 30 May

See also report on Melbourne Indymedia.

Shareholders arriving to consider BHP’s bid for Western Mining Corporation at today’s AGM were met by about 40 protesters calling for an end to uranium mining and the proposed expansion of the Olympic Dam mine at Roxby Downs …

Protesters with Aboriginal flag and anti-nuclear banners etc at entrance

Heavy security meant that protesters were only able to make contact with a small percentage of those arriving for the meeting – most apparently got in through the back entrance. Those who did come to the front were met by banners and calls of “Your money is supporting nuclear war”, “Land Rights not mining rights” and “Western Mining you’re a disgrace/ You could destroy the human race”, while activists in suits offered information sheets – very few of which were refused. The Aboriginal flag was prominent, reflecting the importance of the issue for the Indigenous custodians of the land, and as 10 o’clock approached, the official opening of the meeting, two elders who were attending the protest, Aunty Sue Rankin and Uncle Kevin Buzzacott, passed through the police line and made their way up the ramp to the entrance – closely followed by burly security guards …
