Friends of the Earth picket Western Mining AGM – 2 May
Friends of the Earth called a protest at the AGM of WMC Limited on Friday 2nd May, 9.30 am at the Regents Theatre, 191-197 Collins St. More information from FoE on 03 9419 8700, http://www.melbourne.foe.org.au.
From the picket:
From a FoE leaflet:
WMC operates the Olympic Dam uranium mine in South Australia, at Roxby Downs. This is Australia’s biggest unanium mine, producing over 4500 tonnes of unanium last year, in addition to copper and gold. It is licenced to use 42 million litres of water per day from the Great Artesian Basin for its operations. This is damaging the unique mounds springs habitat. Some of the springs have now dried up completely. WMC has trampled all over the rights of the traditional owners of the land. And the tailings dam (which stores waster from uranium milling) is in effect a huge radioactive waste dump that will continue to pollute the surrounding ecosystem for tens of thousands of years.
