Jincheng, Kinmen

Jincheng Township (Chinese: 金城鎮) is an urban township on the southwestern corner of the island of Kinmen (Quemoy). It is the county seat of Kinmen County, Fujian Province, Republic of China (Taiwan). Jincheng also administers Dongding (東碇) island 26 km (16 mi) to the south-southwest. In March 2012, it was named one of the Top 10 Small Tourist Towns by the Tourism Bureau.

History

Jincheng also served as the capital of Republic of China's Fujian Province from 1949 to 1956. From 1956 to 1996, the capital of Fujian Province was relocated at Xindian, Taipei County, Taiwan Province. In 1996, the capital was moved back to Jincheng.

Jincheng

Jincheng (simplified Chinese: 晋城; traditional Chinese: 晉城; pinyin: Jìnchéng) is a prefecture-level city in the southeast of Shanxi province of north China. It is an industrial city in an area where coal mining is an important industry. The entire prefecture has a population of 2.2 million.

The presence of such a large coal industry has given Jincheng a reputation for air pollution and in recent years the local government has invested heavily to promote better air quality in the city. This includes tree-planting, establishing and maintaining large parks and ecological reserves, shutting down or relocating some of the worst-polluting factories, and the generalized use of coalbed methane which burns much cleaner than coal.

Geography

Jincheng is located in the southeast corner of Shanxi province. The prefecture-level city covens an area of 9,490-square-kilometers. It has 188,920 hectares of cultivated land.

Economy

Jincheng has considerable mineral resources, notably coal. Coal-beds account for more than 56% of the total area. Most of this is anthracite, a very valuable type of coal with few impurities. The anthracite in Jincheng makes up more than a quarter of the total in China and half of the total for Shanxi province. Jincheng also has a large coalbed methane field which was discovered in Qinshui county in 2001.

Kinmen

Kinmen or Quemoy (/kɪˈmɔɪ/; see also "Names" section below), officially Kinmen County (Chinese: 金門縣; pinyin: Jīnmén Xiàn), is an island group governed by Taiwan which located just off the southeastern coast of mainland China, including Great Kinmen, Lesser Kinmen, Wuqiu and several surrounding islets. It is one of two counties under the streamlined Fujian Province of the Republic of China. Only about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) west to the Chinese city of Xiamen, its strategic position has reflected the significant change of Cross-Strait relations from the battlefront line to the main trading point between two sides. Due to the ongoing issue of the political status of Taiwan, The People's Republic of China (PRC) has continuously claimed Kinmen as part of its own Fujian Province's Quanzhou prefecture-level city.

Names

Kinmen was first named Jīnmén (金門; lit, "golden gate") in Chinese 1387 when the Hongwu Emperor of China's Ming dynasty appointed a military officer to administer the island and protect it from wokou (pirate) attacks. The name is pronounced Jīnmén in the official Mandarin Chinese and Kim-mûi in the native Zhangzhou dialect of Hokkien Minnan. The various names used in English for the islands derive from the Chinese counterparts.
