Afghanistan has long been a troubled country. August 7th was a day that was called "one of the bloodiest in the war’s 14-year history”. A truck bomb killed at least 15 Afghan people and sent 240 more to hospitals. Another suicide attack killed 30 police and civilians outside a police academy. The last attack of that day was on a U.S. special operations base near Kabul airport. It was reported that one U.S. soldier and eight Afghan guards had been killed.
Later, the U.S. Department of Defense identified the soldier as Master Sergeant Peter Andrew McKenna Jr., a native of Rhode Island.
The eight Afghan guards were identified as employees of an Afghan subcontractor working for Academi, an American security firm formerly known as Blackwater, among other names.

Tonight, we honor the 4 Marines and a Sailor killed in a senseless attack in Chattanooga. IGTNT normally does not cover those killed in the United States, but we decided as a group to make an exception, just as we did when the Fort Hood massacre happened in 2009. The U.S. Marine Corps is also treating their deaths with the same honors they give to those killed while on active duty. U.S. Marine Corps spokesman, Major Paul Greenberg, told the Chattanooga Times Free Press, their deaths are given the same honors as Marines who are killed during war. Their bodies were sent to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
Major Greenberg told the Chattanooga Times Free Press:
"Upon arrival, transfer cases will be draped and an honorable transfer will be conducted"….. he later added "I can state with confidence that these Marines were serving their country honorably, performing their duties in a professional manner, at the time of their death,"

It is another sad time for our community and for the entire US. We gather tonight to remember the life of a sailor who died while in service to his country. Petty Officer 3rd Class Devon J. Doyle was from the state of Colorado. He had graduated in 2012 and had just celebrated his 21st birthday.

Once again, we gather to pay our respects to one who has fallen while in service to our nation. Tonight we remember the life of an airman from California. He is the first casualty from Operation Inherent Resolve in the year 2015. Last year, there were three other sad deaths, reported by the Department of Defense, of those supporting that operation.

Tonight, we light a candle of memory against the darkness of grief and loss. Tonight, we rememberThis retrospective is a compilation of 2014's "I Got the News Today" (IGTNT) memorial diaries from January through December. They are tributes to the American service members who died as a result of the war in Afghanistan and Operation Inherent Resolve. When you click on the links, you'll find their stories, the details that their teachers, neighbors, fellow service members and friends remember; the last phone calls home; their Facebook messages to loved ones. These are not numbers or abstractions. They were husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, parents, children, friends, colleagues, brothers and sisters in arms. Their lives mattered.
