The Namibian seal hunt is regarded as the cruelest mass slaughter of wildlife on earth. Each year, up to 86 000 Cape fur seals are violently and brutally beaten to death on the beaches of Namibia. In this incredibly powerful and moving video, sent to us by ten year old Gia, she pleads with the Namibian government to end the annual slaughter.
We are exceptionally grateful to her for her support and encourage others to send us their videos so that we may use them to create additional pressure in ending what is undoubtedly a very cruel, barbaric and unnecessary practice.

My second African sojourn began on December 12, 2002 in Nairobi, Kenya. My objective was to learn as much as possible about the Namibian culture, and especially to meet as many of the Namibian indigenous people as possible.
We flew from Nairobi to Windhoek the capital of Namibia, located in the heart of the country.Namibia is a Sub- Saharan arid country on the west coast of Africa between South Africa and Angola. It is so dry that when clouds come into the sky people stop and take notice.
From Windhoek we set out to the northeast to the border of Botswana, to the towns of Tsumkwe and Gam. There we met up with the San Bushmen or Kung people and Herrero people. The San are a hunter and gatherer society, one of the oldest continuous cultures indigenous to Africa. Their language is unique for its phonetic clicking sounds. Now they make their home on the edges of the Kalahari and Namibian deserts. Like many westerners, I was first introduced to the San people through the cult-classic movie, "The Gods Must Be Crazy" and while visiting the San, I had the good fortune to meet and paint Gag'o #Oma, the San bushman star of that movie. He is indeed a special person, and meeting him was one of the major highlights of my trip. His portrait is entitled, of course, The Gods Must Be Crazy.
The Hererro people are a group whose women can be identified by the large wrapped fabric hammerhead shark looking headpieces or turbans that are inspired by the habits of the catholic nuns that taught them as missionaries. I did a portrait of a particularly feisty Hererro woman who jokingly mocked me while I photographed her. Her painting is called "Hererro Wisecracker".
We then traveled westward through Etosha National Park, famous for its diversity of wildlife. We were charged by enormous desert elephants, and had a close call with a white rhino. We stumbled across the white rhino along the road as he ran in front of us Turning northwest we passed through Opuwo on our way to Epupa Falls, which is right on the border with Angola. Here we met the Himba people. They are a nomadic pastoral group that has the most unique and fantastic way of dressing and decorating themselves. They are animists, which means that they worship their cattle and the women mimic the horns of cows by wearing cowhide horns on theor heads. Their bodies are smeared with a mixture of red oxide ochre pigment and pungent cow fat. Being around them smells like a constant barbeque. The Himba people still maintain their traditional ways and dress despite the constant march of modernization around them. The paintings, "Himba Super-Model", "Himba Braids", and "Ochre And Fat" are portraits of Himba women.
Heading south through Damaraland we found the Damara people. Coca Cola Kid is a portrait of a Damara child we met with her family. They can be identified by their use of colorful beads and plastic ornaments woven into their braided hair and worn all over their bodies. Coca Cola Kid caught my eye because of all the coca cola tabs she had woven into her hair. Then it was through the Namib Desert and on to the Skeleton Coast.
From Walvis Bay and Swakupund on the Skeleton Coast, we headed due east back to Windhoek, inland through the great sand dunes. From Windhoek, we flew south to Keetmanshoop and then drove further south to Fish River Canyon, the Namibian equivalent to the Grand Canyon. Finally we had to depart Namibia. We returned to Arusha, Tanzania where we spent the next five months living under the shadow of Mount Meru. During this period, I painted portraits of the Namibian people from the studies I had made while traveling and visiting among them.
Once I had completed a series of portraits, we then resumed our travel and headed for the Maldives via the United Arab Emirates (UAE). I spent a few days in the UAE photographing the people of Dubai. Then we flew on to the Maldives and visited the islands of Male and Gam where I made my photographic studies of the people of the Maldives. Then back to Arusha, Tanzania and the final segment of my trip, which was to culminate in a local exhibition of the portraits I had painted. The exhibition of my Tanzanian and Namibian portraits was held at the Cultural Heritage Center in Arusha. It opened in June of 2002 and ran for three months until September. After the exhibit, I returned to New York to plan my trip to Australia.

With a couple of more days, we recommend to reach Opuwo to see the Himba people. With further 3/4 days, you can add the Namibian Kahalari and the south.
DAY 1
Arrival in Windhoek. Pick up of the car, first walk in the city. Dinner at Joe Beerhouse
DAY 2
From Windhoek to Sesriem. Ca 5 hours of beautiful driving getting the first experience with Namibian gravel roads. Most road in Namibia are gravel but are relatively large and well maintained. Afternoon in Sesriem spent visiting the canyon and climbing the Elim dune.
DAY 3
Wake up at 5.30am to enter the park as it opens (6.10am). Drive the 45km to get to the Dune 45 and first breathtaking climb of the dune. Then straight to Deadvlei and Sussusvlei until around 1pm. As it is summer (up to 45C), we spent the central hours of the day sleeping near the sleeping pool of the lodge. Then short tour and beer to watch the sunset from the savannah
DAY 4
Another early wake up and we are on the way to Swakopmund. First stop is at Solitaire, to taste the apple pie which is recommended in every guidebook. Then stop at the Tropic of Capricorn. The first part of the drive is beautiful with savanna landscape. After you cross the Kuiseb pass you enter a total new landscape as you are entering the Skeleton Coast. A couple of hours of drive in the desolation, and we reach first Walvis Bay, and then Swakopmund where we spend the afternoon exploring the German soul of this city.
DAY 5
The day was spend in an excursion. In the morning we went by boat in the Walvis bay, watching seals, birds, shipwrecks ... In the afternoon, we took the 4x4 excursion to Sandwitch Harbour, a secluded bay very difficult to reach unless you are an experienced off-road driver with the right car. The place is amazing and the top moment was the lunch on the beach, eating oysters, in a beautiful and unspoiled oasis completely untouched by civilisation
DAY 6
Another day on the road (6 hours with stops). From Swakop, we headed north along the Skeleton Coast stopping at the Leila shipwreck and Cape Cross, a colony of thousands of fur seals. From there we drove to the Damaraland which we reached in the early afternoon, on time for a visit to the Twyfelfontein archaeological site (rock engravings and paintings dated between 2,000 and 6,000 years ago). A stop to the Herero women along the roads is a good spot to get some nice souvenirs.
DAY 7
On the move again, direction Etosha. But before we spent an hour at the petrified forest and getting some fuel and lunch in Khorixas. From there, the road to Etosha is paved again. We arrived in Etosha at the Okaukejo Lodge. A couple of hour to rest and we are in the bush again with the car spotting the first animals (giraffe, zebra, impala)
DAY 8
Whole day spent in the car, slowly wandering around the Etosha park. Despite the raining season (the animals are spread in the bush and the vegetation is more dense) we spotted all the key animals with the exception of the felines (esp. the lion was missing).
DAY 9
Return to Windhoek. A nice long way, with a couple of nice and clean villages to stop by to refuel and buy some food and souvenirs. Evening passed enjoying a beer in the great outdoor garden at Joe Beerhouse.
DAY 10
Visit of Windhoek. A small city, not much to see but good for spending a few hours walking around. Flight in late afternoon.

The first swell of the year arrived at Donkey Bay and was met by a frothing pack of surfers who had travelled to the Namibian Desert for the infamous left hander. Aritz Aranburu, Matt Bromley, Natxo Gonzalez, Davey and Benji Brand, Granville West and a crew of SA guys met the challenge head on. With waves in the 6ft range charging down the 3km of point, the guys averaged walking around 30km each, not to mention tube time.

There are said to be as many as one hundred uncontacted tribes still living in some of the most isolated regions of the world. The members of these tribes, who have maintained traditions long left behind by the rest of the world, provide a wealth of information for anthropologists seeking to understand the way cultures have developed over the centuries.

Experts agree there are some very basic - and universal - rules for surviving in the wild. Find shelter, find water, find food, find help. Beyond that, there's not much they agree on. Meet military trained Dave Canterbury and naturalist Cody Lundin - trained survival experts who have very different methods of meeting survival challenges. Together, with their drastically different backgrounds, the pair are dropped into scenarios that could happen to anyone: marooned sailors, lost hikers, trapped divers and stranded mountain climbers. Equipped with minimal gear that would have been carried in the real-life situations, Cody and Dave must draw upon their arsenal of skills to devise extraordinary ways to use what they can find in their surroundings to demonstrate what it takes to stay alive.

Dual Survival - Season 5 Episode 13 - Namibian Nightmare
There are said to be as many as one hundred uncontacted tribes still living in some of the most isolated regions of the world. The members of these tribes, who have maintained traditions long left behind by the rest of the world, provide a wealth of information for anthropologists seeking to understand the way cultures have developed over the centuries.

A plea to the Namibian government
A plea to the Namibian government
The Namibian seal hunt is regarded as the cruelest mass slaughter of wildlife on earth. Each year, up to 86 000 Cape fur seals are violently and brutally beaten to death on the beaches of Namibia. In this incredibly powerful and moving video, sent to us by ten year old Gia, she pleads with the Namibian government to end the annual slaughter.
We are exceptionally grateful to her for her support and encourage others to send us their videos so that we may use them to create additional pressure in ending what is undoubtedly a very cruel, barbaric and unnecessary practice.

It is used as a motivational tool to motivate the youth to rise above challenges they face on a daily basis such as the use and misuse of alcohol, drugs and substance abuse, which can contribute to criminal activities, which Foreversun the individual in the film considers a waste of one's time, ability and potential that can be diverted for productive use.

Donkey Mist - Sunday 31 May at Donkey Bay, Namibia
The first swell of the year arrived at Donkey Bay and was met by a frothing pack of surfers who had travelled to the Namibian Desert for the infamous left hander. Aritz Aranburu, Matt Bromley, Natxo Gonzalez, Davey and Benji Brand, Granville West and a crew of SA guys met the challenge head on. With waves in the 6ft range charging down the 3km of point, the guys averaged walking around 30km each, not to mention tube time.
