Motor vehicle emissions are composed of the by-products that comes out of the exhaust systems or other emissions such as gasoline evaporation. These emissions contribute to air pollution and are a major ingredient in the creation of smog in some large cities.
During the first couple of minutes after starting the engine of a car that has not been operated for several hours, the amount of emissions is very high. This occurs for two main reasons:
Considering that a substantial amount of trips are short, this is a major issue to improve air quality conditions.
Mono-nitrogen oxides NO and NO2 react with ammonia, moisture, and other compounds to form nitric acid vapor and related particles. Small particles can penetrate deeply into sensitive lung tissue and damage it, causing premature death in extreme cases. Inhalation of such particles may cause or worsen respiratory diseases such as emphysema and bronchitis. It may also aggravate existing heart disease. In a 2005 U.S. EPA study the largest emissions of NOx came from on road motor vehicles, with the second largest contributor being non road equipment which is mostly gasoline and diesel stations.

Air pollution from road vehicles is a serious problem. Each vehicle releases a different amount of pollution, some significantly more than others. Until now, there has been no tool available to detect heavily polluting vehicles, thus making vehicle pollution entirely unregulated.
In this project, I designed and constructed a vehicle air quality monitoring and response system, which provides a possible solution to this problem, and more. The system is to be integrated into the control system of a vehicle. It uses an array of low cost gas sensor modules to provide continuous readings of a range of pollutant gases around the vehicle.
The system improves air quality inside the cabin by switching ventilation settings in response to outside air. This is at very low additional cost, such that vehicles with the system installed would attract more buyers, providing an incentive for car manufacturers to include the system in their vehicles. Once widespread adoption is achieved, the government will be able to easily identify vehicles with heavy pollution.

We must plant more trees, avoid bursting firecrackers, make more use of public transport and ensure that regular servicing of our vehicles is done. Lastly, factories and power plants should also be set up far from residential areas, which will help in reducing air pollution.

Paris bans half of city's cars and trucks from streets to combat worst air pollution in years
Paris imposed drastic measures on Monday to combat its worst air pollution in years, banning around half of the city's cars and trucks from its streets in an attempt to reduce the toxic smog that has shrouded the City of Light for more than a week.
Cars with even-numbered licence plates were prohibited from driving in Paris and its suburb on Monday, following a government decision over the weekend.
Around 700 police manned 179 control points around the region, handing out tickets to offenders.
4,000 people had been given fines by midday, and 27 drivers had their cars impounded for refusing to cooperate with officers.

The centre of Athens becomes a no-go zone for cars from today (Monday).
The Greek government is banning traffic in a bid to clean up the city's chronic air pollution.
For a three-month trial period the city's main shopping areas will be free of cars, taxis and motorcycles. Only public service minibuses will be allowed inside what's known as the "Athens Triangle".
In the distance - and even on a clear day - Athens is barely discernible through the thick smog that envelops this ancient city.

Greenpeace has warned that Mexico City's levels of pollution are rising beyond control.
The environmental agency said the pollution was seriously endangering the health of the 10 (m) million residents of the Mexican capital - also the biggest city in the world.
Experts believe car exhaust fumes are mostly to blame for last week's unusually high ozone rating.
One of the world's most highly-populated cities is also one of the world's most polluted ones.
For five days last week, Mexico City officials were forced to implement "Phase 1" of their emergency pollution reaction plan.

Taxis and commercial vehicles weren't covered by the ban.
Public transport was also made free for a fourth day on Monday to help deal with the pollution.
Salesman Pierre Venot said he agreed measures were necessary to bring down pollution levels but said he wished Parisians had been given more notice to work around the ban.
France's environment ministry said that by midday, lower traffic and more favourable weather patterns seemed to be having an impact on pollution levels.
A decision on whether to repeat the measure on Tuesday will be taken before the end of the day, the ministry said.
It was the first time since 1997 that the emergency measure was taken.
Paris' anti-pollution efforts trail far behind those of some other cities.
Athens has had a similar alternate driving ban in place for many years and the measure has contributed significantly both to reducing pollution and reducing traffic.
The Brazilian city of Sao Paolo employs a more complicated licence plate-based system that assigns each car a day of the week on which it cannot be driven during morning and afternoon rush hours.

It's a name that many Chinese car-buyers might associate with high performance, luxurious interiors, attention to detail, and a hefty price tag.
But British automaker Bentley wants its cars to also be famous in China for its eco-credentials.
Bentley is using the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, also known as Auto China, to unveil its Mulsanne hybrid concept car.
The plug-in hybrid is a first for the carmaker, which boasts that it reduces carbon dioxide emissions by up to 70% without sacrificing performance.
And with plans to make nearly all of their cars available as hybrids by 2020, Bentley is betting that Chinese buyers will like what they see.
Mike Sayer, Product and Motorsport Communications Manager, explains:
"We've unveiled the Mulsanne hybrid concept here in Beijing. It's a statement of our hybrid strategy for the future, so we'll be developing hybrid cars now for launch in 2017, starting with our SUV. What sets the car apart is really that it's the first ultra-luxury plug-in hybrid vehicle. We're the first luxury manufacturer to show a plug-in hybrid."
Bentley is not the only high-end carmaker showing off environmentally-friendly models at the Auto China show.
Audi, whose A-series cars have been strong sellers in China, have announced plans to start selling its own plug-in hybrids within the next two years.
Called the e-tron system, the cars will be produced in Audi's Chinese factories for the local market.
Curious carbuyers can take a look at the bare car chassis showing the mechanical workings of the e-tron system, which combines a traditional gasoline engine with an electric motor.
A fire-engine red Audi A3 Sportback e-tron is also on display.
Audi plans to bring the technology here to much of its car line in China, says Oliver Strohbach spokesperson for Audi's Product and Technology:
"We decided to bring the A6 as an e-tron version definitely to China, also a plug-in version. You can have up to a range of 50 kilometres pure electric, and you have a huge range, because there is a combination with a combustion engine. And this is our solution for our premium brand, for Audi, and we think it's perfect for a market like China."
The rising interest in cleaner vehicles among Chinese car buyers is a response to the country's growing air pollution woes, especially in northern China.
In Beijing, a combination of heavy industry, coal burning and car exhaust regularly sends air-quality readings to hazardous levels. Residents wear facemasks with air filters to help cope with the heavy pollution.
The Chinese central government has begun to take steps to try and control the pollution problem.
As industry expert Li Jiuming explains, that extends to the car market as well, with incentives of 50,000-100,000 RMB ($8,000-$16,000) being offered for green vehicles.
"The Chinese government has attached greater importance to the development of eco-friendly cars, especially because of the air pollution. In recent years, about 20 million cars are sold annually in China's automotive market. Currently sales of eco-friendly cars account for only 1 percent of that. But I think eco-friendly cars will become the trend for car consumers. And we will place greater importance on these kinds of vehicles."
January saw air pollution density readings of PM 2.5 particles exceeding 500 micrograms per cubic meter, about 20 times as high as considered safe by the World Health Organisation.
Earlier this year heavy pollution was blamed for increased hospitalisations for heart and breathing problems, and heavy smog has also been blamed for disrupting air transport and retarding the growth of crops by blocking out the sun.
The 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition runs until 29 April.

ICYMI: Google goes pollution hunting, Amazon’s easy button and more
Today on In Case You Missed It: Google Street View cars are rolling through U.S. cities to measure pollution, measuring harmful compounds like methane and carbon monoxide. Amazon is offering 18 kinds of Dash buttons for sale, the little buttons you can push and instant order the moment things like your washing detergent gets low. Apparently it’s not a joke. And NASA is crashing planes to help improve the reliability of Emergency Location Transmitters, so that the signal actually turns on when something goes terribly wrong.
The bonus video today looks like a robot horror movie for a couple seconds and is well worth the view. We wanted to also show you this haunting video of a robot as ribbon dancer but simply ran out of time. Enjoy!

Motor vehicles in China are driving up pollution levels.
Now an increasing number of manufacturers are looking at green alternatives - with electric cars on display at the China International Low Carbon Industry Fair.
STORYLINE
The motorways of Beijing are flooded with traffic.
According to a recent independent report issued by Peking University, and environmental advocacy group Greenpeace, motor vehicles have been found to be the most polluting factor in major Chinese cities.
To respond to these increasing levels of pollution, the Chinese government issued a few years ago incentives to boost development of a new energy automobile sector.
A government sponsored three-year pilot plan kicked off in 2010 which aimed at incentivising the industry by providing subsidies of up to 60,000 yuan (or 10,000 USD) for private purchases in five Chinese cities (Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Hefei and Changchun). In 2012 a similar trial tax-exemption plan was introduced for new energy vehicles.
At the latest China International Low Carbon Industry Fair a few manufacturers gathered to display small models of electric vehicles.
He says some regulations are in place in some cities, but they are not nation-wide, and this affects sales, and the will to invest in research and development of new technology.

STORYLINE
Smog levels in the Chinese capital were "beyond index" on Tuesday according to the US Embassy's tracking of Beijing's air pollution levels.
Visibility was down to 200 metres and some people wore masks on the streets.
Beijing is frequently cloaked in a yellow haze, often almost obscuring buildings that are only a couple of blocks away.
A Twitter feed set up by the US Embassy in Beijing reports air quality as measured by a monitor on the embassy roof and publishes it online every hour.
The reading of 501.0 on Tuesday was classified as "beyond index".
Those readings include levels of fine particulate matter, or PM2.5 - a type of pollution that Beijing authorities also measure but do not release to the public.
Sometimes seen as soot or smoke, PM2.5 is tiny particulate matter - less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter, or approximately 1/30th the average width of a human hair - that can result from the burning of fuels in vehicles, power plants and agriculture.
Breathing such fine particles causes respiratory problems and can lead to death.
China's environmental ministry has said it will factor PM2.5 into national air quality standards, but not until 2016.
Last week, however, state media announced that the bureau in charge of monitoring China's frequently smog-choked capital will release more detailed reports, following a public outcry over the hazards of fine particle pollution.
Beijing's decision to publish the data appeared aimed at appeasing residents' anger over the pollution and a lack of government transparency.
Beijing's official air quality index regularly records the pollution as "light" - a reading at odds with what many people experience.

GREECE:ATHENS: BID TO CLEAN UP CITY'S AIR POLLUTION
Greek/English/Nat
The centre of Athens becomes a no-go zone for cars from today (Monday).
The Greek government is banning traffic in a bid to clean up the city's chronic air pollution.
For a three-month trial period the city's main shopping areas will be free of cars, taxis and motorcycles. Only public service minibuses will be allowed inside what's known as the "Athens Triangle".
In the distance - and even on a clear day - Athens is barely discernible through the thick smog that envelops this ancient city.
Athens has one of the highest pollution levels in Europe and the Greek government has decided to do something about it.
The heavily congested centre is the first target. For three months there will be no more vehicles driving through the "Athens Triangle" - the commercial heart of the city.
Only a public service minibuses providing free transport will be allowed. Residents in the area will also be issued with special permits for their vehicles.
The Greek government is hoping the three-month trial will lead to a permanent traffic ban in the city centre. So far the move has been welcomed by pedestrians and tradesmen alike.
SOUNDBITE: Vox Pop (In Greek)
(Translation: "The ban will benefit both the shops and the Flea Market in general as the area (Monastiraki) has gone down in value last year and something must be done to stop this".
SUPER CAPTION: Athens shop-owner.
The Athens commercial triangle - the area within Athinas, Ermou and Stadiou streets - is the biggest challenge for government and environmentalists alike. While not wanting to implement measures that will adversely affect business, they are keen to protect the landmarks of ancient Greece, threatened by continuous exposure to chemical pollutants.
Shop owners whose businesses are located within the Athens
Triangle have objected to the Environment Ministry's proposals to ban delivery vehicles during specific hours.
However there are many who back the traffic ban.
SOUNDBITE: Vox Pop (In English)
"Everywhere in the world these places are walking places, like malls, and that shops in the area will work better than when motorcars and push bikes are around".
SUPER CAPTION: Shop owner - Athinas Street.
If the trial proves successful the Greek government plans to make the traffic ban permanent and could extend it to other areas of the city.

MEXICO: POLLUTION LEVELS RISING BEYOND CONTROL WARNING
Spanish/Nat
Greenpeace has warned that Mexico City's levels of pollution are rising beyond control.
The environmental agency said the pollution was seriously endangering the health of the 10 (m) million residents of the Mexican capital - also the biggest city in the world.
Experts believe car exhaust fumes are mostly to blame for last week's unusually high ozone rating.
One of the world's most highly-populated cities is also one of the world's most polluted ones.
For five days last week, Mexico City officials were forced to implement "Phase 1" of their emergency pollution reaction plan.
The maximum level of ozone allowed is 160 points.
But on one day the ozone level reached 260 and on average over the five days, the ozone levels reached 215 points.
Car exhaust fumes and carbon-dioxide emissions from factories are mainly to blame for the pollution levels.
And under "Phase 1", Mexican officials, including bureaucrats and diplomats, cannot use their cars while several factories remain closed for the day.
But Greenpeace warns the government's response won't be enough.
SOUNDBITE: (In Spanish):
"Mexico City faces one of the greatest ecological crisis on this planet. Its uncontrolled growth, its acute atmospheric pollution and its urban degradation are due to its condition of extremely poor country and, to a large degree, to the government's inability to plan ahead and widespread official corruption."
SUPER CAPTION: Alejandro Calvillo - Greenpeace
Environmental activists say they can't understand why the rules and regulations surrounding automobiles haven't changed.
SOUNDBITE: (In Spanish)
"Mexico City approximately consumes 44 (m) million liters of fuel a day, including gas, fuel-oil and gasoline. We just don't understand why the city's government still insists that the city can maintain this rate of ecological degradation."

COLOMBIA: BOGOTA: PROJECT LAUNCHED TO IDENTIFY POLLUTION LEVELS
Spanish/Nat
Authorities in Colombia have launched a two (m) million U-S dollar project to identify pollution levels which have made life in the capital, Bogota, a misery.
The air above Bogota is heavy with toxic fumes from car exhausts and factories.
The population is plagued by poor health due to the bad air, and environmentalists welcome the latest initiative.
Rush hour in Bogota.
Colombia's capital city, situated at two thousand five hundred meters above sea level, is choking on fumes from car exhausts and local factories.
And the eight million inhabitants there are suffering.
Chest infections are common in Bogota.
The response has been a two (m) million U-S dollar project, backed by the city's mayor, to monitor pollution levels.
The results, expected in three months, will help authorities plan their next step in this latest environmentally-friendly initiative.
Officials already estimate that 60 per cent of the city's pollution is created by traffic.
The research is being backed by the city's environmental department (DAMA), set up 18 months ago.
UPSOUND: (Spanish)
"Equally, we are working on projects which will substitute fuel used in public transport, with gas, from petrol to natural gas, with most gasoline used switched to liquid gas or petrol. This a mid term project. Colombia has made important discoveries in these gas fuels. These are cleaner and pollute less than petrol."
SUPER CAPTION: Eudardo Uribe Botero, Director of DAMA
Some measures have already been taken to reduce damage caused by exhaust fumes.
A car share campaign has been launched to reduce the amount of commuter traffic moving in and out of Bogota.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"In addition, they are working on building permanent cycle paths so people can travel about the city on bicycle, encouraging alternative forms of non-pollutant transport."
SUPER CAPTION: Eudardo Uribe Botero, Director of DAMA
But much of the problem stems from local industry.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"As regards industry, which causes 40 per cent of the pollution, there are other strategies for the replacement of combustibles, such as carbon to gas, and coke to gas, and environmentally friendly policies, to oblige them to meet pollution standards as set down by the authorities."
SUPER CAPTION: Eudardo Uribe Botero, Director of DAMA
Tougher tactics such as a recent tax hike of 13 per cent on fuel prices has reduced car use in Bogota by ten per cent.
Business owners will be bracing themselves for a similar hard-line once the full extent of pollution is established.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the BP oil disaster, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) began on 20 April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. It claimed eleven lives and is considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, an estimated 8% to 31% larger in volume than the previously largest, the Ixtoc I oil spill. Following the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, a sea-floor oil gusher flowed for 87 days, until it was capped on 15 July 2010. The total discharge has been estimated at 4.9 million barrels (210 million US gal; 780,000 m3).

Ralph Nader (/ˈneɪdər/, Arabic: رالف نادر; born February 27, 1934) is an American political activist, as well as an author, lecturer, and attorney. Areas of particular concern to Nader include consumer protection, humanitarianism, environmentalism, and democratic government.
Nader came to prominence in 1965 with the publication of his book Unsafe at Any Speed, a critique of the safety record of American automobile manufacturers in general, and most famously the Chevrolet Corvair. In 1999, a New York University panel of journalists ranked Unsafe at Any Speed 38th among the top 100 pieces of journalism of the 20th century.
Nader is a five-time candidate for President of the United States, having run as a write-in candidate in the 1992 New Hampshire Democratic primary, as the Green Party nominee in 1996 and 2000, and as an independent candidate in 2004 and 2008.
Hundreds of young activists, inspired by Nader's work, came to DC to help him with other projects.[citation needed] They came to be known as "Nader's Raiders" and, under Nader, investigated government corruption, publishing dozens of books with their results:
Nader's Raiders (Federal Trade Commission)
Vanishing Air (National Air Pollution Control Administration)
The Chemical Feast (Food and Drug Administration)
The Interstate Commerce Omission (Interstate Commerce Commission)
Old Age (nursing homes)
The Water Lords (water pollution)
Who Runs Congress? (Congress)
Whistle Blowing (punishment of whistle blowers)
The Big Boys (corporate executives)
Collision Course (Federal Aviation Administration)
No Contest (corporate lawyers)
Destroy the Forest (Destruction of ecosystems worldwide)
In 1971, Nader co-founded the nongovernmental organization (NGO) Public Citizen with fellow public interest lawyer Alan Morrison as an umbrella organization for these projects. Today, Public Citizen has over 225,000 members[25] and investigates congressional, health, environmental, economic and other issues. Nader wrote, "The consumer must be protected at times from his own indiscretion and vanity."[26]
During the Watergate affair Nader challenged the dismissal by Robert Bork of Nixon's special prosecutor Cox in the aftermath of the Saturday Night Massacre.[27]
In the 1970s and 1980s Nader was a key leader in the antinuclear power movement. "By 1976, consumer advocate Ralph Nader, who later became allied with the environmental movement, 'stood as the titular head of opposition to nuclear energy'."[28][29] The Critical Mass Energy Project was formed by Nader in 1974 as a national anti-nuclear umbrella group.[30] It was probably the largest national anti-nuclear group in the United States, with several hundred local affiliates and an estimated 200,000 supporters.[31] The organization's main efforts were directed at lobbying activities and providing local groups with scientific and other resources to campaign against nuclear power.[30][32] Nader advocates the complete elimination of nuclear energy in favor of solar, tidal, wind and geothermal, citing environmental, worker safety, migrant labor, national security, disaster preparedness, foreign policy, government accountability and democratic governance issues to bolster his position.[33]
Nader was also a prominent supporter of the Airline Deregulation Act.[34]
For his activism, Nader received the S. Roger Horchow Award for Greatest Public Service by a Private Citizen in 1974, an award given out annually by Jefferson Awards.

Enjoy!

Most of the residential areas do not have that type of supplier and most cities do not have petrol-station-like facilities to charge electrical cars."
