Travel video about destination Namibia.
Windhoek is the flourishing capital of Namibia and it is from here that we begin a journey through this country and experience some of the magic of the Dark Continent on a luxurious train - the Desert Express!Dating back to colonial times, the Christ Church is a reminder of the end of hostilities between the Germans and the indigenous population during the period when it was known as ‘German West Africa’, and indeed German influence in this part of the world is still very much in evidence today. A short journey leads into the isolated loneliness of the prairie and to lion feeding at the Okapuka Ranch in which an Austrian keeps lions in their natural environment. A popular holiday resort on the mouth of the River Swakop and the final destination of the rail journey, Swakopumund, through whose harbour everything that was used in German West Africa was transported, resulting in a regular trading route between Swakopmund and Hamburg for more than ten years - a hint of Germany on the edge of the desert! In Swakopumund there are architectural treasures that were rented out in the days of the Kaiser and are reminiscent of various houses in Berlin. This is a part of Germany that no longer exists in Germany itself. Moon Valley is bizarre and extra-terrestrial and for millions of years it has withstood the erosive power of the Swakop. With its deep-cut valleys and no vegetation in sight, the endless rocky landscape seems unfriendly, life threatening and impassable. Namutoni Camp is situated in the centre of the Etosha National Park and has a history that dates back to 1851. Thirsty antelopes and zebras rendezvous at a watering hole while a herd of elephants drink at another. Namibia is, quite rightly, a much sought after tourist destination. White deserts, wild animals, mountains strewn with ravines, and white beaches - Africa’s south west is full of more than a few colourful surprises!

South Africa is not only impressive due to its size but also due to its amazing variety of fascinating scenery. Its paradise-like flora and fauna plus its historic and famous landmarks are totally captivating. Johannesburg is a modern metropolis and with around a million and a half inhabitants is the capital of Gauteng Province and the largest city in South Africa. It was founded in 1886 when gold was first discovered at Witwater Beach. Although European influence is obvious in South Africa the first inhabitants of this fascinating country were of course the various indigenous people of Africa and the village of Lesedi around twenty five kilometres south of Johannesburg provides many insights into ancient Africa’s traditions and dances. Lesedi contains four tiny villages that are inhabited by Zulus, Xhosas and members of the smaller Pedi and Basotho tribes. Close to Pilgrim’s Rest is one of the most beautiful landscapes in South Africa, Blyde River Canyon, a spectacular twenty six kilometre long and eight hundred metre deep canyon where erosion caused by the confluence of the Treu and Blyde rivers has created a number of amazing rock formations. With its many craters Moon Valley is evocative of the lunar landscape. This unusual area was formed during a wet period around four hundred and sixty million years ago by the Swakop River that is one of the longest and widest rivers in Namibia. The region became famous due to a miraculous plant, the Welwitschia Mirabilis, a living fossil that was first discovered in the middle of the nineteenth century and can survive for up to six hundred years. The Etosha National Park in the north of Namibia is one of the largest nature reserves in the world. In the dry winter months hundreds of thousands of animals gather and make this park into Africa’s most populated wildlife area. Man must continue to be fully aware of his responsibility to nature and nowhere more so than in Southern Africa that is one of the last natural paradises on Earth.

Take a tour of Rock Art of Twyfelfontein in Kunene, Namibia -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
In Kunene, Namibia, lies the archaeological site of Twyfelfontein, home to large numbers of ancient rock carvings and paintings.
These handcrafted works of art depict a myriad of animals, people, mythological beings, and pictograms.
The art here is divided into two categories, where the oldest is over 6,000 years old, while even the newer parts are at least 2,000 years old.
The people who carved the Twyfelfontein rock art used these carvings for worship and for ritual practices.
There are literally thousands of different carvings and paintings within a space of less than half a mile.
Though some of the sites are guarded for their protection, visitors can come to admire the ancient stonework of Twyfelfontein.

Namibia is in Southern Africa, bordering South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and the Atlantic Ocean. Formerly a colony of Germany, Namibia was administered by South Africa under a League of Nations mandate after WWI, and annexed as a province of South Africa after WWII. The South-West African People's Organization (SWAPO) launched a guerrilla war for independence in 1966, but did not gain independence until 1990.
Namibia boasts remarkable natural attractions such as the Namib desert, the Fish River Canyon Park, Etosha National Park and the Kalahari desert. Its people speak nine different languages, including some of the Khoisan languages which include the 'clicks' that present an enigma to most native English-speakers. Namibia produces some of the world's highest quality diamonds.

================
Namibia is a land of much natural beauty. To truly appreciate the country, you need to get out in the countryside, either on a tour or by renting a car, and take in the deserts, the mountains, the villages and all that that Namibia has to offer.
One of its most dominant features, and the one for which the country is named, is the Namib Desert that stretches for nearly a 1000 km along the Atlantic coast. As one of the oldest deserts in the world, its sand takes on a distinctive rust colour and it has some of the highest sand dunes in the world. Sossusvlei is the most accessible part of the desert and is a magical place with its towering dunes that shift hues as the sun rises and sets. Further south, near the South African border, is Fish River Canyon, one of the largest canyons in the world. Stretching for 160 km, it is reaches 27 km across at its widest and nearly 550 m down at its deepest. In the north of the country is the empty and mostly inaccessible Skeleton Coast National Park. It's a seemingly barren expanse of stone and sand famous for its fog and the number of shipwrecks along the coast.
Perhaps not as plentiful as neighbouring Botswana or South Africa, Namibia still has plenty of African wildlife to see. This includes some local subspecies, such as desert lions, desert elephants and the Hartmann's Mountain Zebra, which are adapted to the harsh desert climate. Grazing animals like gemsbok, ostrich and springbok are also common. Namibia's national parks are an excellent place to start and one of the most famous is Etosha National Park in Northern Namibia. The park surrounds the Etosha salt pan, which attracts animals, particularly in the drier winter months, because it is a source of water in a very dry land. Other notable spots to view wildlife are Waterberg Plateau Park, the parks of the Caprivi and the remote Kaokoland.
Namibia has a German influence from colonial times that is still reflected in some of its buildings. Windhoek has a number of interesting buildings like the Christuskirche, the train station and the castle-like Heinitzburg Hotel. Lüderitz is a colonial-era town with distinctive German Imperial and Art Nouveau styles. Nearby is the abandoned mining town of Kolmanskop. Once a thriving center for diamonds, the miners moved on and the sand dunes have moved in, but tours are still available.

Lüderitz is a harbour town in south-west Namibia, lying on one of the least hospitable coasts in Africa. It is a port developed around Robert Harbour and Shark Island.
The town is known for its colonial architecture, including some Art Nouveau work, and for wildlife including seals, penguins, flamingos and ostriches. It is also home to a museum, and lies at the end of a currently decommissioned railway line to Keetmanshoop.
In 2013, it was reported that Lüderitz was renamed into ǃNamiǂNûs. This pertains only to the constituency, though.
Landmarks Luderitz, Namibia
====================
1 - Felsenkirche (English: Rock Church) on Diamond Hill, a church in vertical gothic style consecrated in 1912. After the diamond rush of 1908 and the completion of the railway line to Keetmanshoop Lüderitz became permanently home to a significant white population. As a result a number of churches were built. Felsenkirche, one of the oldest Lutheran churches in Namibia, is a national monument since 1978.
2 - Kreplinhaus, the residence of the first mayor, Emil Kreplin, built in 1909
3 - Krabbenhöft & Lampe building, contained the first formally registered business in South-West Africa, erected 1909
4 - Deutsche Afrika Bank building, erected 1907
5- Lüderitz Railway Station, erected 1904
6 - Goerkehaus, the residence of Hans Goerke, manager and co-owner of the early diamond umbrella company, erected 1909-1911

Walvis Bay is a city in Namibia and the name of the bay on which it lies. The town has 85,000 inhabitants and owns 29 square kilometres (11 sq mi) of land.
The bay has been a haven for sea vessels because of its natural deepwater harbour, protected by the Pelican Point sand spit, being the only natural harbour of any size along the country's coast. Being rich in plankton and marine life, these waters also drew large numbers of Southern right whales, attracting whalers and fishing vessels. The Dutch referred to it as Walvisch Baye and the English as Whale Bay. In its eventual proclamation, it came to be called Walfish Bay, then Walvish Bay, and ultimately Walvis Bay. It has also been referred to as Walwich Bay or Walwisch Bay.
A succession of colonists developed the location and resources of this strategic harbour settlement. The harbour's value in relation to the sea route around the Cape of Good Hope had caught the attention of world powers since it was discovered. This explains the complicated political status of Walvis Bay down the years.
The town is situated just north of the Tropic of Capricorn in the Kuiseb River delta and lies at the end of the TransNamib Railway to Windhoek, and on the B2 road.
Walvis Bay, with its large bay and sand dunes, is the tourism activity centre of Namibia. Other attractions include the artificial Bird Island, centre of a guano collection industry, the Dune 7 sand dune, salt works, birdlife and a museum. Kuisebmund Stadium, home to two clubs in the Namibia Premier League, is also located in the city and the beach resort of Langstrand lies just a few kilometres north. The Walvis Bay Export Processing Zone is an important facet of the local economy.
Walvis Bay (Walvisbaai) lies some 30 kilometres south of Swakopmund, accessed (if you happen to approach from the north) on a stunning ocean road seamed by mighty dunes. The town is situated at a wide lagoon with innumerable sea birds, pelicans and flamingos. On a clear day one can see the black-and-white lighthouse at the tip of the premontary at the northwest of the lagoon.
Walvis Bay had already been discovered by Diaz as early as 1487, but was founded only in 1793 by the Cape Dutch and two years later annexed by the British. In 1910, Walvis Bay became - like the entire Cape Colony - part of the South African Union. After Namibia's independence, the only deep sea port on the Namibian coast remained under South African rule and only in 1994, the former South African president F.W. de Klerk gave it back to Namibia.
The lagoon is the scenic feature of Walvis Bay. It is one of the most important wetlands of southern Africa and is the hibernation area for thousands of migratory birds. Worth a visit in Walvis Bay is the local museum in the Civic Centre, the Birdlife Information Centre and the wooden Rhenish Mission Church from the year 1880. "Dune 7" near town is the highest sand dune of the area. Who climbs it, can enjoy a wonderful view.
A unique experience is the adventurous 48 km drive to Sandwich Harbour, a freshwater lagoon surrounded by dunes, and a favourite amongst anglers and ornithologists. A four-wheel drive is a necessity. The track is not in all parts easy to recognise. Some stretches go through soft sand, and the last bit one has to walk. You have to inquire about the tides. At high tide there is no way as the dunes just slope down steeply into the water.

Impalila (sometimes spelt Mpalila) is an island at the far eastern tip of Namibia, bounded on the north by the waters of the Zambezi river and on the south by the Chobe River. It is home to some 300 people in 25 small villages, including Tswanas (from Botswana) and Subia people (from Namibia).
Impalila is usually accessed from Kasane in Botswana, on the other bank of the Chobe River. There is a Namibian customs and immigration post on the island. There is also an airport with a 1,300 metre runway, used for charter flights to bring tourists to the various lodges on the island. The airport is a relic of a military base used in the 1980s by the South African Defence Forces, strategically positioned within sight of Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Impalila is a led by a chief who has the power to give land to the people in need.

SOUTH AFRICA/NAMIBIA: REGATTA TEAMS REMEMBER AIR CRASH VICTIMS

English/Nat
International regatta teams gathered in South Africa on Saturday and paid tribute to twelve competitors - still missing after a German military plane collided with a U-S military plane last week.
The Germans were on their way to Cape Town to take part in the event when the accident happened off the Namibian coast.
Only one body - that of a German flight hostess - has so far been found in the cold waters off Namibia's Skeleton Coast.
In all, thirty two people are still missing.
Saturday's opening ceremony of the inter-navy regatta challenge in Simonstown, South Africa, was supposed to be a celebration.
Instead, members of the 12 teams participating in the event to celebrate the South African navy's 75th birthday, were paying tribute to the 12 German competitors who never made it to the competition.
Following tradition, participating teams - including France, India, Russia and Australia - normally raise their countries' flags.
But this time, they remained at half mast.
The twelve missing German sailors were on board a German Tupolev 154 from Germany to South Africa when it crashed with an American C-141 from Namibia to Ascension Island in the south Atlantic.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The shadow of the tragic air accidents of both a German and American aircraft last weekend is reflected here in the half-masted colours, and the wreaths that have been laid. We, as a navy, feel a great sense of concern for the missing and sorrow for the dead."
SUPER CAPTION: Rear Admiral Martin Trainor, South African Navy
After the formalities, twelve wreaths were taken out to sea and thrown in the water in honour of the German sailors.
The German plane was carrying 24 passengers - the 12 navy men, two spouses and ten crew members.
Although nothing has been heard since faint distress signals last Sunday and early on Monday, the search area was expanded on Friday.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We will carry on searching with seven or eight aircraft, special aircraft long-range maritime patrol aircraft from the German navy, South African aircraft, American aircraft, a French frigate is taking place and a German frigate is on its way to the scene to continue with the search as long as possible."
SUPER CAPTION: German Defence Attache Captain Bito Housselle
Officials said the American C-141 was carrying two 20-person life rafts that could have drifted far from the crash site.
No significant wreckage has been found since a 5- by 10-metre piece of debris from the American plane was discovered on Wednesday.
But searchers finally got a break on Friday from the low clouds and dense fog that had hampered their efforts off the Namibian coast.
Eight aircraft are now searching the area and a light aircraft is scouring the coastline for wreckage that may have washed up on the beach.
A spokesperson for the South African Airforce said the U-S Navy had dropped sonar buoys in the primary search area, where the planes were suspected of having gone down.
That was an attempt to locate the flight recorders.
Several Namibian fishing vessels have been involved in the search.
But 32 people are still missing.

English/Nat
The single body recovered from a crash between a German and an American military plane off Namibia has been identified as a Berlin flight attendant.
None of the other 32 people, including nine Americans, have been found - following the collision between an American military transport and a German aircraft.
There is now little hope of any survivors from Saturday's crash.
The first pieces of wreckage from the fatal air crash were brought to Walvis Bay harbour on Thursday.
The fishing trawler, Yoko-Tani, arrived in Walvis Bay harbour on the Namibian west coast early Thursday morning.
It carried the first pieces of debris from the crash to be recovered.
The planes crashed Saturday while flying in opposite directions - the German Tupolev 154 from Germany to South Africa, the American C-141 from Namibia to Ascension Island in the south Atlantic.
The collision happened at approximately 35,000 feet (10,500 meters) some 115 miles (175 kilometres) off the coast.
Air corridors often are shared, but planes travelling in opposite directions are supposed to fly at different altitudes.
A German investigating team were on hand to inspect the wreckage in an effort to determine what caused the accident.
A sea search and rescue mission was launched to look for possible survivors and retrieve wreckage from the crash.
The Yoko-Tani is one of three ships taking part in the sea effort.
Rescuers have so far found the body of one crash victim but there is no sign of the other 32 persons believed to have been on board the planes.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"No I don't think so. Not in a way that we could see, very small pieces were floating around, I doubt it (that there are any survivors). (Q.) And the water conditions, if somebody was alive, could they survive in those water conditions? (A.) There should be no problems, the water there is about 40 degrees Celsius."
SUPER CAPTION: Martin Peterson, Captain of fishing boat
Officials said German and U-S officials flew early Thursday in two helicopters to examine a 5 by 10 metre (17 by 33 feet) piece of wreckage recovered late yesterday by the French frigate Florial.
Disagreements have surfaced between Namibia and Germany over why the two planes didn't know about each other and why it took 20 hours from the time they disappeared before they were reported missing.
Seven aircraft continued Thursday to search for bodies and the fuselages of the two planes despite poor visibility and a cloud base of 800 feet (240 meters).
So far the body of one woman has been found. She was Saskia Neumeyer, 43, of Berlin, an air hostess aboard the doomed German Tupolev.

The Namib is a coastal desert in southern Africa. The name Namib is of Nama origin and means "vast place". According to the broadest definition, the Namib stretches for more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) along the Atlantic coasts of Angola, Namibia, and South Africa, extending southward from the Carunjamba River in Angola, through Namibia and to the Olifants River in Western Cape, South Africa.[1][2] The Namib's northernmost portion, which extends 450 kilometres (280 mi) from the Angola-Namibia border, is known as Moçâmedes Desert, while its southern portion approaches the neighboring Kalahari Desert. From the Atlantic coast eastward, the Namib gradually ascends in elevation, reaching up to 200 kilometres (120 mi) inland to the foot of the Great Escarpment.[1] Annual precipitation ranges from 2 millimetres (0.079 in) in the most arid regions to 200 millimetres (7.9 in) at the escarpment, making the Namib the only true desert in southern Africa.[1][2][3] Having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for roughly 55–80 million years, the Namib may be the oldest desert in the world.[1][3]
The desert geology consists of sand seas near the coast, while gravel plains and scattered mountain outcrops occur further inland. The sand dunes, some of which are 300 metres (980 ft) high and span 32 kilometres (20 mi) long, are the second largest in the world after the Badain Jaran Desert dunes in China.[1] Temperatures along the coast are stable and generally range between 9–20 °C (48–68 °F) annually, while temperatures further inland are variable—summer daytime temperatures can exceed 45 °C (113 °F) while nights can be freezing.[4] Fogs that originate offshore from the collision of the cold Benguela Current and warm air from the Hadley Cell create a fog belt that frequently envelops parts of the desert. Coastal regions can experience more than 180 days of thick fog a year.[1][3] While this has proved a major hazard to ships—more than a thousand wrecks litter the Skeleton Coast—it is a vital source of moisture for desert life.
The Namib is almost completely uninhabited by humans except for several small settlements and indigenous pastoral groups, including the Ovahimba and Obatjimba Herero in the north, and the Topnaar Nama in the central region.[2] Owing to its antiquity, the Namib may be home to more endemic species than any other desert in the world.[4] Most of the desert wildlife is arthropods and other small animals that live on little water, although larger animals inhabit the northern regions. Near the coast, the cold ocean water is rich in fishery resources and supports populations of brown fur seals and shorebirds, which serve as prey for the Skeleton Coast's lions.[4] Further inland, the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the largest game park in Africa, supports populations of African Bush Elephants, Mountain Zebras, and other large mammals. Although the outer Namib is largely barren of vegetation, lichens and succulents are found in coastal areas, while grasses, shrubs, and ephemeral plants thrive near the escarpment. A few types of trees are also able to survive the extremely arid climate.[4]

The Namib is a coastal desert in southern Africa. The name Namib is of Nama origin and means vast place.
Namibia's 'Fairy Circles': Nature's Greatest Mystery?
http://youtu.be/fQIuimmUTNc
When it rains in the Namib, a thick carpet of grass covers the sand and stony desert. But this green layer is punctuated by bare circular patches, as regular as if drawn by a compass. And there are not just one or two of them, but hundreds of thousands. Observed from the air, they could be innumerable golf bunkers - or an abstract painting: «Red dots on green background». They appear between 60 to 120 kilometres from the coast and stretch from South Africa to Angola. They are bordered by a ring of tall, thick grass, which stands out from the surrounding sparse vegetation. But where did these mysterious «fairy circles» come from? Are they caused by mineral
compounds in the ground? Did poisonous plants or poison gas contaminate the subsoil? Are they the work of insects? Or is it the impact of meteorites that is responsible? And what crucial role do they play in the ecosystem? Three scientific teams have conflicting theories, but finally the amazing secret of the fairy circles is revealed!
