Djal - Extra Bal (France 2003) @320

They're French, they're fresh, and they're fun. They're also fabulous musicians. Based in Grenoble, Djal combine influences from jazz and Arab music (ubiquitous in France just now) with traditional material from the Savoie region and beyond.
Their instrumentation includes fiddle, flute, hurdy-gurdy, button box, bouzouki, recorder, bass, bombarde, dulcimer, guitar, and various drums. The overall sound is rich and varied, with plenty of punch and the added depth of a seven-piece band.
This is a live recording, made at a home gig with an atmosphere halfway between a
barn dance and a rave. There's a primal energy on tracks like Hollwenn and the opening set of three bourés. Michel Bordeleau'S great Québecois Reel des 4 Fers en l'Air is given an inspired treatment, and it's followed by a trio of jigs with more than a touch of Irish about them. Gavottes, rondeaus and other Breton dances are mixed in among the standard French forms. With the exception of Michel' reel and a couple of polkas, all the tunes are by band members. Most of the tracks here are up-tempo dance music, but there are some gorgeous slow numbers. Ivoirine is a stately air, and the waltz Masque Rouge is one I intend to learn.

Improvisation is one of Djal's strengths. Several of its members have one foot in jazz, and their extended solos are a joy to hear. Yann Gourdon's demonic hurdy-gurdy is awesome on Hollwenn and elsewhere. Christophe Sacchettini's flutes are pure magic, and Daniel Gourdon's fiddle brings an eerie swirling quality to several tracks. The rhythm section is also worth a mention: imaginative, incisive and irresistibly intoxicating. All in all, this is an excellent CD and a wonderful example of the best French music. Available from www.mustradem.com and ADA distribution.

Toctoctoc - L'ombre et la lumière (France 2014) @320

"The shadow and the light" reveal dark and glittering universes, spontaneous reflections of the spirit of the women and the men in our time duality these songs of which are inspired.
The "popular" instrumentation (hurdy-gurdy with wheel, diatonic accordion, diverse instruments with breath and obviously the voice) turns to a sensitive and creative sound which accompanies you, like a sound and poetic laboratory, in the world of the current traditional musics, in perpetual evolution.
TOCTOCTOC, it's the need to create a sound space inside, which it is possible to let live positive feelings, but also the bitternesses of the life, real commitment to make expanding of a message of sharing and confrontation.
As in the dance, in which the public is invited, the meeting remains the best moment of our existences, ceaseless alternation of shadow and light.

Orion - Orion 1987 (Belgium 1987) @128

Kindly offered by a Folk Yoursef's friend. Thank you friend!
Very rare, never released on CD - Taken from a cassete tape.

The Celtic band Orion has been a going concern since 1987.
Its music testifies to a wholly personal approach of the Celtic tradition. Powerfully swinging dance tunes alternate with haunting slow airs, graceful melodies and beautifully crafted traditional songs. On their first three albums, Orion also guides the listener through less known music by Turlough O’Carolan, the blind Irish harpist from the 18th century.
Today the band is playing almost exclusively its own compositions, combining a multitude of musical influences.

Orion - Strawberry Town (Belgium 2009) @192

CK: Fantastic album!

The fourth album over more than two decades (following 1990, Blue Room and Restless Home) by this Belgian group is another gem of contemporary Celtic music, melding folk with classical references and stylings to delightful effect. Replete with catchy hooks and melodies, it provides a wide range of moods and atmospheres – the ethereal and emotionally stirring, the stately and almost church-like, buoyant Breton and Flemish dance signatures, through to tight and punchy, propulsive rhythmic grooves with fiery playing. Not that there is any jagged juxtaposition here; rather, the composing of sequenced sets, weaving wider European references into their Celtic tapestry, is intricate refined and sophisticated.

All of them (Rudy Velghe, fiddle, viola, nyckelharpa, guitar, keyboards; Raquel Gigot, accordions; John Faulkner, vocals, bouzouki; Erwan Berenguer, guitar; Gwenael Micault, keyboards) play lead and support roles in the complex layering of their instruments to create arresting synergies and rhythmic interest. They deserve to be ranked amongst the best contemporary Celtic groups. Their ability to draw on people of the calibre of Philip Catherine and Pat Desaunay, amongst an array of other excellent musicians who play and/or are thanked, show wide peer respect.

Some standout features include the haunting and emotional character of Faulkner’s vocals on the ancient homicidal ballad story behind Strawberry Town and crisp mouth music, Arne van Dongen’s warm and richly toneddouble bass, percussive textures added by Johnny ‘Ringo’ McDonagh, and a charming tribute to harpist Turlough O’Carolan’s melodic 18th century music.

Shillelagh - Germaine (France 2008) @256

Thanks to Waters for this contribution!

For this third album, Shillelagh has concocted a subtle mix of current ballroom dances (Schottish, chapeloise, bourée, etc ...) and Flanders dance. Registration allows public to feel the energy of the dancers mingling with the energy of the music. Shillelagh takes us into the friendly atmosphere and festive time they create a ball. The sound is that of an accomplished group, who plays for the pleasure of the ears and legs. for "Germaine" they have six guests who give such a particular color to "Pieternelle" Flanders dance ever danced plsu. Cristina Pato - Latina (Spain 2015) @320

Cristina Pato is a modern day Renaissance woman. A pop star of the ‘gaita’ (the Galician bagpipe) in her native Spain, she moved to New York to attain her Doctorate in collaborative piano and push her career in an entirely different direction. Pato daringly skirts the boundaries of jazz, classical and world music, and in her forthcoming album Latina, she and her band The Cristina Pato Quartet delve into the musical diaspora of latin music. In her own words: “it is a way to embrace my heritage through music exploring the connections between the country of origin of the word [Latina], Italy, and the countries that are nowadays considered Latino. Using the metaphor of one of the essential rhythms of traditional music: the 6/8, Latina is a musical journey that begins with the Italian Tarantella and travels through Spain and Latin American 6/8 rhythms like the Joropo or the colombian Llano; the peruvian Festejo or the Galician muiñeira.” Pato has also made a name for herself as a break-out member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. She often steals the show with her passionate, energetic performances on stages throughout the world and will be featured in Morgan Neville’s.

Peatbog Faeries - Dust [2011 Scotland] @320

With their unique approach to the Scottish tradition, Peatbog Faeries play to audiences all over the world. This album takes them in a new direction and could be long time producer Calum McLean's finest hour. As McLean said himself "this album has been the best musical experience of my life".

New members have provided fresh impetus to the direction and creativity of the band: Fiddle player Peter Tickell brings a youthful enthusiasm. He has developed experimental techniques in the use of fiddle effects while remaining rooted in his tradition. Peter currently also plays in Sting's band. Drummer Stu Haikney brings a vast store of experience to the band and incorporates sampling into his live playing.

The band prioritised live takes as the starting point for the album bringing the sound closer to the thrill of their "on stage" performances. The band began the process, in their studio, in Orbost, Skye before doing final takes in the studios of Cumbernauld College. The band loved working with the students there and "handpicked" four of them to take part in the engineering process under the beady eye of Calum Mclean.

Phønix - Nu [2014 Denmark] @320

One more Yojik's contribution!

5 stars in Froots magazine:
“It's is six years since Phønix last made an album, so this latest, excellent one genuinely deserves that old cliché “long awaited”. And it doesn't disappoint.”

“Nu” contains a bouquet of Danish folk songs in new versions and arrangements, as well as a number of instrumental tracks composed by the band members. On the new album the well-known groovy Phønix sound (based on percussion, bass clarinet, accordion and vocals) has been refined with new elements like keys, synth, backing vocals.

Duo Bottasso - Crescendo (Italy 2014) @320

Piedmont born Simone (diatonic accordion) and Nicolò Bottasso (fiddle) are confident and conscious musicians, who deeply master the grammar of traditional styles. What’s more, they don’t stand still, for them tradition is not to be placed untouched in a museum. Simone and Nicolò Bottasso play contemporary folk music, whose geographical boundaries sometimes become blurred.

The Bottasso brothers, Nicolò on violin and Simone on diatonic accordion, play a show of world music with their own compositions and reinterpretations of folk songs. The Duo is always looking for a compromise between the delicacy on their instruments and the explosive energy that never fails to these two young musicians: all this combined with the complicity of this two brothers bound by the desire to keep evolving the tradition of their homeland.

In 2014 Duo Bottasso releases his first album Crescendo, featuring Elena Ledda, Mauro Palmas, Gilson Silveira and many others guests. Cresendo symbolizes both the music dynamics and a the story of two brother musicians firmly rooted in the dance music of the Occitan area in Italy, aiming at the adeventuring in the paths of new compositions and improvisation. The Duo played in many important festivals and works as directors and teachers for the orchestral project Folkestra&Folkoro.

Accordzéâm - Accordzéâm Symphonique (France 2014) @320

One more Yojik's courtesy :)

In this new disc, Accordzéâm combines the classical universe and Neotrad: there is boldness in the arrangements, comedy Rating certain melodies hidden in their heart ... and all in the interpretation. Using as a thread Dvořák, Accordzéâm Symphony offers a musical journey between the new America, the "old continent" Europe and the Slavic people ... not to forget to slip a little "French touch" in the journey (after all, the group and the orchestra were recorded in Paris)!

Sophie Cavez & Baltazar Montanaro - Le 3ème Temps (Belgium 2015) @320

It is in the tender and playful world of Baltazar Montanaro-Nagy (violin) and Sophie Cavez (accordion) Le 3ème Temps that was born. Steeped in many cultures, music is deeply organic and moving, all at once rooted and air. Recorded at Shipyard (creative center of new traditional music and world music located in Correns - 83), this third installment will be released March 30, 2015.

Le 3ème Temps offers rearrangements pieces collected from musicians in France and in the world, according to the many tours of the duo since 2008. We find such music from Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Brittany, Provence and Galicia, revisited by Sophie Cavez and Baltazar Montanaro-Nagy with the complicity and freedom that characterize them.
Pursuing in parallel his compositions, the duo also offers us four magnificent titles that complement gracefully the imaginary landscapes crossed listening to this album.

This duo, endearing and talented, has a contagious vibratory sense, limitless potential, incredible strength and velvet notes. Their association made a very foolish.

Trio Dhoore - Parachute (Belgium 2015) @320

Trio Dhoore is a great representative of the young generation of Flemish folk musicians. They have powerful melodies composed by themselves, perfect skills for handling their instruments and a good taste! They proof that acoustic music can at the same time swing, touch your deepest soul and be modern in its simplicity.
Toon Van Mierlo
- Naragonia, Hot Griselda -

Some groups seem to come from nowhere and are already forgotten while they are not even out of sight. The guys of Trio Dhoore resolutely opt for the other way. They allow themselves the time to grow in the shade and in the meantime remain constantly scouring the sound and the interplay. In result, as you can hear ... Good tunes of there own making, honest unpretentious folk, swinging like a train. Comme il faut, quoi. Make place for yet another generation of talented folkies!
